Chapter 2795: Depths of Hell
Alex hoped for the old man to answer his queries, but instead the old man looked confused. Genuinely confused.
“A metal wall?” the old man asked.
Alex nodded. “At least, I think it was metal. Do you not know about it?” he asked.
“Where was this wall again?”
“In the freezing depths, beyond even where the beasts with Sunheart go to cultivate,” Alex explained.
It became clear from the old man’s expression at that moment that he had no idea what Alex was talking about. “We generally can’t go that low. We tend to gather our Elixir from even much further above since it’s safer there.”
Alex thought for a bit and realized how his Yang body was one of the major reasons why he had gotten as close as he had down there. He only then figured that the old man wouldn’t have any idea.
He had hoped he would have the answer, though.
“Do you think this metal wall is responsible for making Elixir?” the old man asked.
Alex nodded. “I’m more than certain,” he said.
“Why?”
Alex didn’t know how to say it concisely, so he let Whisker explain all the events that led to them discovering Elixir, and how Yin aura was likely the fuel that was used to create Elixir.
The old man’s eyes seemed to sparkle in fascination. “That’s an interesting theory,” he said. “And the evidence does stack in its favor too.”
“It does,” Alex agreed.
“But there are a few other pieces of evidence that stand against that theory too,” the old man said. “So unless you have an answer for that, I can’t trust this to be the case.”
Alex welcomed the debate. “What pieces of evidence are there that stand against it?” he asked.
“Well, there are a few minor ones, such as the size of this metal wall you spoke of, how much of the desert it possibly covers for Elixir to be present almost everywhere, and the fact that most metals don’t do anything unless you add runes to them.”
“Not to mention, the Yin element by itself is the element of stagnation and stasis. It does not move things. It does not activate formations. If the metal is swallowing Yin, then how is it using it?”
Alex took a moment to think, and so did Whisker.
“I don’t have an answer for size just yet, since I’ve only seen the wall just once. I left the depths because I was scared I was going to run out of Sunhearts far too quickly. I do have plans to go there soon and see how it is.”
“When I do go down there, hopefully I’ll learn how it is capable of using Yin to create Elixir. We’ll know how it is working. But… you said those were just minor pieces of evidence. What about the major ones?”
The old man nodded.
“There is a major piece of evidence that works against your theory of a metal wall creating Elixir. It’s the fact that Elixir gets stronger the closer you go to the center of the desert.”
“If there is a metal wall that creates Elixir everywhere, how come the strength varies based on region?”
The question made Alex think hard. He had always known very early on that people and beasts got stronger the deeper they went into the desert. And after learning about Elixir, it had become clear that Elixirs got more concentrated the deeper one went.
“Here’s what I always believed was the truth,” the old man continued. “There’s an oasis at the center of the desert that is ever filled with Elixir. That Elixir overflows and seeps back into the ground, spreading further and further away.”
“That’s why there is a difference in the quality of Elixir based on region. That’s why the beasts always want to go deeper into the desert. They want to reach the Elixir Oasis.”
Alex felt stunned for a long second. “There’s an oasis at the center of the desert filled with Elixir?” he asked.
“That’s what I believe,” the old man clarified. “I don’t know if there actually exists one or not, but that is how I’ve come to imagine the center being.”
“Oh,” Alex said before becoming confused. “Wait, what do you mean you believe? Do you not know what is actually at the center?”
“How could I? I’ve never been to the center.”
“Really?” Alex asked with a bit of surprise. “I’m sorry, I just thought you would have been there already. Wasn’t the Hell Emperor fascinated with Elixir?”
The old man sighed. “We did. Or at least, we tried,” he said. “We took all of our best Extolites and went through the red sand as deep as we could go. There are so many more beasts gathered there and yet we fought through them all, surviving only because little Bai was capable of cultivating Qi using Yang.”
“However, after traveling for a long time, we came up at a place where millions of the strongest beasts formed a perimeter around an invisible wall. With each beast there being stronger than even many of us, we had to give up. Not even the Hell Emperor himself could ever fight that many beasts.”
“We were supposed to return again when he became a Celestial, but instead…”
The old man’s words trailed off.
Alex took in the information as if he hungered for it. Invisible wall? Horde of beasts? He was fascinated by each and every single piece of information.
Why was there an invisible wall at the center of Hell? Did Elixir originate at the center or was he correct about the metal underneath creating it?
If he was wrong, then what was up with the metal? If he was right, then what was inside of the invisible wall?
Alex wanted to go to both depths of Hell and find his answer as soon as he could. Unlikely as it was, maybe that could even be his answer out of Hell.
’Still, Death should be my priority right now,’ Alex thought. ’I need to find her as soon as I can and heal her mind.’
If anyone could, it was him.
