Chapter 1718: Chapter 1717: I Have a Doubt

How should I notify Tong Sanlang and Bei Lingsu?

The Soul Chasing Root—it’s actually the Soul Chasing Root!

Qiao Xiaomai paced back and forth in the tent, anxious and agitated. What should she do? That drop of Divine Liquid had already been given to Tong Sanlang. If the poison truly spreads, then the soldiers of Daqi would have no path but death.

Thinking over and over again, Qiao Xiaomai couldn’t come up with any solution for the moment. Just then, her stomach let out a growl—she realized she was hungry.

It was already nearing dusk. Her conversation with Bei Yun had lasted all afternoon, and she hadn’t eaten anything since having a small bite in the morning—not even a drop of water.

She stepped out toward the kitchen.

Once she reached the kitchen, she casually fixed herself something to eat. While seated, she stared absentmindedly, her thoughts racing over how to notify Tong Sanlang and Bei Lingsu.

She sat by the stove, picking up a fire poker and scribbling aimlessly on the ground. She drew and doodled for quite a while but still could not come up with any ideas. Frustrated, she stood up and took heavy steps back to her tent.

Night fell; darkness crept in.

Campfires lit up the Camp. Standing at the entrance of her tent, she fixed her gaze on the patrolling soldiers nearby, saying not a word.

What should she do?

What should she do?!

As she continued to fret, suddenly Bei Lingsu’s voice reverberated through the Camp, “Bei Yun, get out here now!”

Qiao Xiaomai’s spirit lifted in an instant; she quickly raised her head to look toward the night sky.

But in the expanse of the night, not a single shadow was visible. Qiao Xiaomai shouted loudly, her voice trembling but resolute, “Soul Chasing Root! Soul Chasing Root! Burn them—burn it all! Wherever there’s Soul Chasing Root, burn it all!”

This shout bore the mightiest force her throat could muster, echoing with a pitch and volume she had never employed before across two lifetimes. The moment her voice fell, Bei Yun appeared before her like a phantom.

Bei Yun’s tent was placed adjacent to hers, but the swiftness of his emergence was too abrupt—so much so that she instinctively stepped backward several paces, startled.

“What do you think you’re doing?!” She stared at Bei Yun with wary eyes.

“Nothing much.” Bei Yun’s expression remained calm and collected.

He tilted his head slightly in the direction of the voice’s origin and remarked, “Aunt Lingsu is in the central clearing. Your shouting might not even reach her ears.”

“Don’t waste your breath—I’ll go talk to her myself.”

Throwing down this remark, Bei Yun vanished once more like a wraith.

Qiao Xiaomai was left speechless.

She stomped her feet in frustration before retreating inside her tent.

This speed—it was terrifying! With such agility, even if she tried an ambush, she wouldn’t be able to lay a finger on him.

Useless! Truly useless!

While Qiao Xiaomai indulged in her silent self-reproach, Bei Yun indeed went to find Bei Lingsu.

Bei Lingsu’s hearing was excellent, but it was true she hadn’t caught Qiao Xiaomai’s earlier shout. Without any inner strength to enforce it, the sound had been too limited to reach her ears.

When she saw Bei Yun coming over, she sneered, “You dare come here?”

“Why wouldn’t I dare?”

Tong Sanlang wasn’t present, and no other members of the Bei family were around—just Bei Lingsu herself. What did he have to fear?

“What kind of poison is this exactly?!” Bei Lingsu didn’t waste time arguing and pointed directly at the soldier corpses lying on the ground.

“It’s a new mixed poison I’ve developed. I don’t have an antidote, nor do I know how to neutralize it. So my suggestion is to burn these corpses alongside those carts of gold and silver—all of it in one big fire.”

Bei Yun gave his answer straightforwardly, but Bei Lingsu hesitated. “You’re sure it wouldn’t create another type of toxin after burning?”

“No, it won’t.” Bei Yun shook his head.

“You’re being awfully candid.” Bei Lingsu’s suspicion of him deepened.

Seeing this, Bei Yun couldn’t help but sigh. “Aunt Lingsu, there’s actually a question I’ve been meaning to ask you, seeking your answer.”
