A Farmer's Journey To Immortality
Chapter 522: Modified Woodland Bear Berserker FormsChapter 522: Modified Woodland Bear Berserker Forms
While Aksai enjoyed a glass of his homegrown wine while being accompanied by a beautiful wood nymph in the back, the fight between the sect elders and Aksai’s subordinates was at its peak.
The scent of burning talismans and stirred-up Spirit energy filled the space. The four Iron Mountain Sect elders, standing in different directions, raised their hands and began casting Spirit spells.
One summoned a wide 2nd Order flame barrier that spread around him like a shield. Another called forth a set of wind blades that slashed through the air with deadly speed.
The third elder stomped the ground and caused thick earth spikes to rise and block the advancing enemies. The fourth created a dome of shimmering light that buzzed with Spirit essence, offering defense while he prepared his next attack.
The four Woodland Demon Bears didn’t wait. Their bodies surged with power as Spirit energy lit up around them in four different colors—green for wood, red for fire, brown for earth, and pale blue for wind.
One of the bears opened its mouth and let loose a strong gust of wind that swept toward the wind elder, carrying sharp leaves and Spirit-infused needles. Another bear slammed its paws into the ground, causing thick vines to shoot out from beneath the floor and grab at the earth elder’s legs.
The third demon bear, with fire glowing from its claws, charged forward and swept its limb in a wide arc, releasing a wave of flames that clashed against the flame elder’s barrier. The last bear summoned a wall of stone behind the light-dome elder, trying to trap him in a narrow space.
After using their spells, the bears didn’t stop. They charged in with their muscular bodies, using Qi-based martial arts fused with their beastly strength. Their movements weren’t refined like trained human martial artists, but their sheer power made up for it.
Aksai had modified the bears’ souls using Aether-based concepts. He had also given the bears their own subroutine neural link fabrics, allowing them to grasp any concepts Aksai had previously learned at an accelerated rate.
He had fed these neural link fabrics with a few Qi-based martial arts techniques, carefully selected for the demon bears based on their beastly bodies’ convenience and compatibility. One could say the demon bears had inherited all their Spirit spells and Qi-based martial arts from Aksai.
However, Aksai had only granted the woodland demon bears a portion of his knowledge. It was up to them to make that knowledge part of their individuality—and they could only do that by gaining experience using it in real-life battles.
Thus, Aksai had arranged a controlled death match for the demon bears. One could say that the sect elders couldn’t have attacked him at a better time.
The fire bear leapt forward, claws glowing red, and slammed into the flame elder’s barrier with a heavy punch. The wood bear followed its vine attack with a spinning kick, smashing into the earth elder’s rising wall and breaking through it.
The wind bear used its claws like blades, slicing at the wind elder with sharp Qi bursts in every strike. The earth bear, slower but more stable, used a series of palm strikes and body slams to keep the dome elder under pressure.
The two remaining demon bears stayed back, eyes scanning the fight. The moment they spotted an opening, they moved in with perfect timing.
From behind the flame elder, one of the standby bears charged and struck with a shoulder slam, breaking the barrier for a second.
The other standby bear supported the wood bear, using a sweep attack to trip the earth elder while the vines tried to trap him again.
The demon bears didn’t fight like wild beasts. They worked in pairs, often backing each other up or switching targets smoothly. Their training under Aksai’s neural link fabric’s influence showed in their rhythm and coordination.
But it wasn’t perfect.
As the fight continued, cracks began to show in the bears’ moves. Their reaction time lagged when the elders changed spell styles.
They fell for feints and didn’t always cover each other when they should have. Their attacks had power and variety but lacked the sharpness that came with real battle experience.
It had to be noted that the subroutine neural link fabrics were not as capable as what Aksai had. It could not help the demon bears in improving their Spirit spells or Qi-based martial arts and could only work as real-time guides.
As such, this was an expected outcome for Aksai. He had never thought that the woodland demon bears who were mere cubs not too long ago would be able to defeat veteran Foundation Building Experts in one go despite all the advantages he had provided to them.
Thus, Aksai didn’t act and let the woodland force handle the sect elders on their own.
The sect elders correctly identified the woodland demon bears’ weakness– their inexperience. They stopped holding back.
One elder threw out a Spirit talisman that burst into a storm of fire arrows. Another took out a glowing crystal and activated it, forming a thick armor of wind around himself.
A third used a one-time-use defensive treasure to deflect a powerful strike and counter with a lightning spell hidden in his sleeve.
The demon bears were caught off guard.
All six of them were injured. Deep cuts, burns, and bruises appeared across their thick hides. One bear was forced back, coughing blood. Another collapsed on one knee after a talisman blasted it across the dome.
Just when it looked like the elders would finish them off—
The Verdant Elder roared.
From behind the lines, it raised its arms and launched a barrage of wood-element Spirit spells. Giant branches, twisting roots, and sharp leaf daggers rained down from above and below. The ground beneath the elders became unstable, rising and falling as thorny vines pierced through.
Forced to retreat and defend themselves, the elders stepped back. One had to know that the Verdant Elder hadn’t attacked them with all that he got. He had merely used his Spirit spell as a distraction. Even the sect elders were dreadfully aware that the Verdant Elder alone would be enough to finish them all off if he really got serious.
Meanwhile, the small window created by the Verdant Elder’s actions was all the Scarecrow Fiends needed.
A few of the twenty Sentient Scarecrow Fiends moved in quickly. Their stitched bodies carried speed and skill. They pulled back the injured demon bears and dragged them to safety.
In their place, six Sentient Scarecrow Puppets entered the fight. Unlike the six woodland demon bears, the puppets were meant for battle without a lack of self preservation. They carried weapons—wooden spears, curved blades, and sharp whips infused with Aether energy.
The puppets attacked the elders right away, not giving them a chance to catch their breath.
Meanwhile, a few Scarecrow Fiends stayed with the fallen demon bears. They knelt beside them and placed glowing hands on their wounds. Heal-type Spirit spells wrapped the bears in soft green light, patching their flesh and calming their breathing.
One could say that Aksai was training the six woodland demon bears to act as captains of their respective teams, while the Sentient Scarecrow Fiends served as foot soldiers and assistants. That’s why he was keen on training them in real battles. Only by exposing them to dangers could he allow their latent potential to come out.
The Sentient Scarecrow Fiends were capable ground workers. But their limitations came from the “raw ingredient” used to make them. They certainly were capable of carrying out group attacks and acting as disposable pawns. They could also help to buy time during critical moments.
But they were not enough to overwhelm veteran Spirit cultivators if and when the battle was dragged on for long. At least the current standard of the Sentient fiends was not up to the mark for such endeavors.
A group of four or more current fiends could certainly bully the early stage Foundation Building Experts. But even after increasing that number from four to 14 was not enough to deal with a mid-stage Foundation Building Expert for long.
As such, the Spirit farmer had decided to assign each capable woodland creature a set of fiends under their command, creating a strict and stable hierarchy among his subordinates.
This way, it would be easier for Aksai to manage multiple matters in the future by deploying his subordinates to carry out tasks instead of handling everything himself.
Aksai planned to equip all captain-level woodland creatures with subroutine neural link fabrics, which would allow them to grow rapidly. At the same time, these subroutines would enable them to share information and experiences, allowing them to take more effective actions against their enemies.
Furthermore, Aksai would maintain full control over the captains thanks to the subroutine neural link fabrics, which were all connected to his own parent neural link fabric.
This connection would also allow him to monitor situations in real time, as data sharing between the subroutines and the parent fabric was fully possible.
