“You are a player!” Aella confronted Tang Shaoyang fearlessly, even though five intimidating knights stood behind him.
She had a doubt at first, but this might confirm her suspicion. That was why she paid more attention to the man ever since their first battle together. The five knights looked unusual, and they were not having the same armor as those knights from The Sacred Kingdom and The Chevalier Monarchy. While she did not have a skill to determine someone else’s rank, she was confident in her judgement that the five knights were of a God Rank.
“I thought you already knew,” Tang Shaoyang decided not to hide his identity as a player any longer by summoning his five spirits. The people would have guessed when the six God Ranks appeared out of nowhere, and he believed that the natives had some knowledge about the players as well.
“I have a request!” Aella grabbed Tang Shaoyang’s wrist so quickly, but she realized that the crowd was looking at them right now. “Let’s speak later.”
After Aella confirmed that he was a player, everything became easier. He asked her to register the spirits in the Mercenary Guild first. She had a guess that the five knights were a God Rank, but confirming it with her own eyes and ears was a whole different matter. The five knights were registered as White Rank Mercenaries, but they were all God Ranks.
The attendant was in doubt at first because the five spirits refused to show the stats screen. Not because they did not want to, but because they could not. The attendant did not even budge when Tang Shaoyang told her that he was a God Rank and part of the Mercenary Guild, and he was willing to guarantee the five knights’ rank.
The Attendant checked Tang Shaoyang’s name in the database, and she found out that the man in front of her was indeed a God Rank. However, she also found out that the God Rank was only a Green Rank Mercenary. That was the reason why the supposed to be a simple process ended up meeting the Sorcerer Mercenary Guild’s Guild Leader.
The Sorcerer Mercenary Guild’s guild leader was a woman who looked to be in her mid-thirties. She wore the signature Sorcerer Robe of the Sorcerer Monarchy as she greeted them into her room. The Raven Monarchy Mercenary Guild’s guild leader notified her about the one anomaly mercenary, a God Rank Mercenary, and told her not to disturb him unless he came on his own. Despite her curiosity, she did not call the man, but she did not expect to meet the mysterious mercenary this quickly.
“I have been notified by my employee about your friend’s issue, but can you tell me why your friend can’t show their stats screen? Showing your stats screen is necessary for the guild registration.” She was direct with the main issue despite her curiosity.
“I think we have given a good reason, and we have told your employee as well. I also told your employee that we will take the test if you don’t trust us. That’s another way to register as a mercenary, no?” Tang Shaoyang answered.
Aella had told them that they could take a test to prove their ranks if they were not willing to show their stats screen. Tang Shaoyang proposed the idea of taking the test as well after his guarantee did not work. However, the employee used the fact that the guild never tested a God Rank for guild registration. She could not make the decision, hence directing the issue to the Guild Leader.
“If it’s a normal occasion, we will figure out a way for the test, but we are in a war right now. We can’t create a test for a God Rank in a hurry. If you are not willing to show the stats screen, then we can’t accept you into the guild. There’s nothing we can do in this situation,” The Guild Leader thought a little bit of coercion might work.
Tang Shaoyang shrugged, “If you say so.” He accepted it easily and turned around to leave. “I guess we have to go to another mercenary guild branch that’s not in a war.”
He immediately caught what the Guild Leader tried to do, but she made the wrong choice there. The guild was in dire need of manpower. The guild was the one that was desperate for more people to fight against the Dominion’s invasion.
“Wait!”
Sure enough, the Guild Leader stopped Tang Shaoyang from leaving, “Can you tell me why you can’t show—”
Tang Shaoyang raised his finger, stopping her from finishing her question, “Are you pretending to be stupid or what? What about you? Are you willing to share your stats screen with us?”
“But—”
Tang Shaoyang cut her again, “But we are trying to enter the guild, and you are not? But we choose to take the test, and if you can’t afford to hold the test, then so be it. I am not questioning your guild’s competence for failing to make a test for my friends, so let’s stop with that, okay? You don’t have to ask the question if you already know the answer, again and again.”
Aella was getting nervous as she was not expecting the meeting with the Guild Leader would be heated like this. She understood the Guild Master’s curiosity because she was curious as well, but it seemed like the Guild Leader was trying to be forceful to see their stats screen. However, she did not expect to hear a strong response from Tang Shaoyang as well. She was surprised by how fearless Tang Shaoyang was, even though they were in the Guild Master’s territory.
The Guild Master smiled coldly, “Do you want to witness how competent the Sorcerer Mercenary Guild is? I can show you how capable we are!”
To her surprise and Aella’s surprise, Tang Shaoyang and the five knights were chuckling at the threat. It was an obvious threat, but they did not expect to take the threat lightly. Tang Shaoyang did not respond in time as the door was flung open.
“Alright, guys, let’s stop at this before things get uglier. I know we are in a tense situation because of the war, so let’s not make it worse,” Alves entered the room and threw a sharp glance toward the Sorcerer Mercenary Guild’s guild master.
He reminded her not to make a big deal of the suspicious person because he had confirmed that this person was not an enemy. Tang Shaoyang fought for them and killed The Dominion, but he did not try to make it known, meaning Tang Shaoyang wanted to stay hidden. In his mind, Tang Shaoyang was clear of the suspicion of being a spy or enemy. It was better to keep it that way as long as Tang Shaoyang sided with them.
However, his friend tried to make things worse for them by antagonizing six God Ranks. He was still unsure whether those five were a God Rank, and he could understand his friend’s curiosity as well. But he did not like how she tried to use this forceful approach. They might be able to kill six God Ranks, but they would lose a lot of people, and also, the Dominion might use this chance to launch an attack as well.
“I apologize, I don’t mean to eavesdrop on your conversation, but I heard it all.” Alves met with Tang Shaoyang for the first time. He did not remember a God Rank with this face from the Raven Monarchy. This might confirm his suspicion that Tang Shaoyang was a player who was put by the System or Tower in his guild.
“Since Guild Master Hera could not make the test, I will make the test for your friends, Sir Tang Shaoyang.” Alves treated Tang Shaoyang more respectfully, “The test will be simple, your friends just need to spar with the God Rank from the Mercenary Guild. If your friends can keep up for five minutes against my people, then you will pass the test. If your friends pass the test, they will be registered under the Raven Mercenary Guild.”
Tang Shaoyang let out a sigh. He could not understand why these people wanted to make things hard for themselves. If they did not believe that his spirits were a God Rank, they could register them under the Demi-God Rank. In the end, what mattered to the guild was the mercenary rank. The requirement to take a certain contract was determined by the mercenary rank, not their actual rank. He told the attendant who served them that he did not mind if his spirits were recorded as Demi-God Rank. He just wanted them to be registered and created a team to make his quest easier.
Tang Shaoyang squinted his eyes. The idea was good for his spirits, but he did not know why; he wanted to be petty. He just realized that he had become pettier lately, pettier than he usually was, and wanted to make things harder for the Guild Master. For some reason, he wanted to cancel the idea of registering his spirits as mercenaries and leave. He did not know; he just wanted to make the Guild Leader regret making things harder for him.
[Don’t be petty and make things harder for yourself. You have to start over again and waste your two days’ progress if the tower issued you a new request because you have a conflict with the mercenary guild, Master.] Maldros – The Stormbringer reminded his master just like a good butler.
‘You are right about that, but I have another way to make her regret,’ He replied, Maldros in his mind, before shooting a glance toward the five spirits.
‘There’s no need to hold back, trash them all in less than a minute! No, less than thirty seconds!’ He sent a telepathy to his five spirits before turning toward Alves.
“Alright, let’s do that.”
The test must be held outside the city. Even though it was just a friendly fight, a fight between God Rank could be devastating for the city. It was in an open clearing in the middle of the forest, and Alves brought the nine God Ranks from his guild.
Hera also came to watch and brought the eight God Ranks from her guild as well. She was practically telling Tang Shaoyang that her guild outnumbered him; that was the face she gave him, telling him that her guild was not incompetent as he claimed earlier.
She had her people set up a barrier as well, ensuring the battle did not cause a false alarm to the city.
The first one to step out from Tang Shaoyang’s side was Jovrick. The Forsaken Infernal Knight put up his black helmet and stepped into the arena ring. The moment he stepped into the ring, his aura changed. His eyes turned cold and fierce, looking at his opponent as if his opponent were prey. He had a shield on his left hand and a lance in his right hand.
Jovrick’s opponent was a dual-wielding swordsman. He sheathed the swords the moment he met Jovrick’s eyes. A nervousness could be caught from his eyes as he faced the black-armored knight.
Meanwhile, Alves volunteered to be a referee. He would stop the fight when he deemed necessary or if the test was over. He saw the two sides were ready and shouted, “Start!”
Everyone thought it would be a close and fierce battle until the match started. Alves’ mercenary rushed toward Jovrick first and took the initiative, but his sword was easily blocked by Jovrick’s shield. Jovrick did not budge from his spot and looked toward his opponent with ease. That was when things immediately changed as the shield was glowing in dark red, and with a slight push, Jovrick flung the swordsman away.
The dual-wielding mercenary was flung to the barrier, and his back hit the barrier. His head was dizzy from the impact, and his vision was blurred for a moment. The moment his vision returned, the tip of a lance greeted him.
Jovrick was standing a meter away from the mercenary, and his lance was a centimeter away from his opponent’s right eye. It was clear who won the fight.
Jovrick pulled his lance and returned to his original spot. He put the shield down and stuck his lance down to the ground. He stood haughtily while looking at his dazed opponent.
“We can have a rematch if you think you are losing because you don’t use your full power. You can come at me again with your strongest skill,” Jovrick made a gesture at his opponent to come at him again once more, provoking the mercenary into a rematch.
