Aspiring to the Immortal Path

Chapter 1085: Turning a Battle into a Play

Chang Xiran’s sword move was known in the Celestial Sword Gate as the “Heavenly Court Sunderer”, with the meaning that this blow could even obliterate the Court of Myriad Domains. While it couldn’t possibly be this strong, it did show a level of confidence in this attack.

When Chang Xiran unleashed this attack, the surroundings became full of his sword energy, his wild sword intent so powerful that just sensing it would make one feel pain. Those of lower cultivation level didn’t dare to get close.

But this domineering sword strike, when used against the weapon wielded by some nameless Nether Attendant, only resulted in utter humiliation.

The blast of sword energy momentarily dazzled everyone’s eyes.

Chang Xiran’s thousand swords merged into one was once more scattered to the winds by its own power, swords flying in all directions.

But that Death God weapon was still there, without the slightest damage. On the other hand, its wielder had been blasted to death by Chang Xiran’s attack. While dying, it had even thrown up some blood that had stained several of the Heartbreak Swords, which immediately lost luster, thus damaging the Heartslayer sword overall.

“Bastard!” Chang Xiran himself was about to throw up blood from rage.

Meng Qihong had also realized the gravity of their situation. He first conjured up a wave of energy to wrap around the Nether Attendants, slowing them down. He then fired off blasts of energy from his fingers, targeting both the weapons and the Nether Attendants, assessing the enemy as he attacked them.

This move seemed to be effective in slowing down the offensive of the Nether Attendants, but Meng Qihong’s attacks were still ineffective against the Death God weapons. As for the Nether Attendants, even if they died, another would be born to replace them, and the constant threat of corrosion presented by their blood meant that the human cultivators did their utmost to keep their distance.

While the human cultivators had more powerhouses, the sheer number of ghosts was managing to hold the humans down. With these Nether Attendants joining the fray, the balance of power began to tip toward the ghosts. Not only were the likes of Yuan Tianzhong and Chang Xiran fighting with their hands tied behind their backs, even Wei Tianchong and company were caught off guard by the Nether Attendants and pushed back.

The black fog that had been scattered by sunlight and flames once more began to thicken.

At this moment, Tang Jie grunted and flew out.

He had remained on the sidelines this entire time, observing the battlefield, and it was only when the Underworld Nether Attendants started to make headway that he finally intervened—he had been itching to get his hands on all those Death God weapons.

He swiftly flew up to a Nether Attendant, and as the attendant swiped its scythe at him, Tang Jie unflinchingly thrust his finger forward.

Aghast, Chang Xiran shouted, “Tang Jie, get back! That weapon–”

Before he could finish, that weapon that had refused to break no matter what he did shattered into countless motes of light, and the Nether Attendant died with it.

Chang Xiran fell silent as if someone had stuffed a wad of cloth into his mouth, and all he did was dumbly stare.

How… how is this possible?

All these matters were beyond his knowledge and understanding.

Ignoring him, Tang Jie collected the black grain and moved to the next Underworld Nether Attendant. He thrust out his finger, shattering another scythe and slaying another Nether Attendant.

It was as simple as could be.

Tang Jie repeated this action over and over. The seemingly unstoppable Nether Attendants were now completely helpless, tiny ants ready for Tang Jie to crush.

The cultivators all cheered.

Nether Emperor Zoros despaired.

These Underworld Nether Attendants had taken him several thousand years after becoming a Nether Emperor to accumulate, and having them destroyed was like being stabbed in the heart with a knife, if he actually had one. But what shocked him most was that he couldn’t understand how this human was doing it.

The Death God weapons were projections of the Blade of Reincarnation, manifestations of the Great Dao, and such items could not be destroyed. In all the history of the Nether Domain, there was no record of a Death God weapon being destroyed.

But now, this person had appeared and was destroying one after another with no signs of stopping.

Zoros suddenly recalled the divination he had made not too long ago.

As an astrolabe spirit that had become a Nether Emperor, he had a natural gift for fortune-telling and could vaguely sense the powers of Karma and Fate. Although he couldn’t obtain precise details, he could always gather a sense of direction. It was with this ability that he had always managed to turn danger into fortune and survive in the vicious Nether Domain, ultimately becoming a Nether Emperor.

Not too long ago, he had sensed that the Nether Domain would experience a great upheaval.

He couldn’t tell what the origin of this upheaval was, only that it would start with the Nine Nethers Feast. In this upheaval, a new Nether Emperor would be born and an old Nether Emperor would fall.

He didn’t know who would be born or who would fall, but he sensed that this was a feast where danger and fortune coexisted.

This was why he had come personally and organized this immense feast.

If he succeeded, he would become that new, even stronger emperor, breaking free of the shackles that had bound him for a thousand years.

If he failed, then he would become the fallen emperor, and everything would come to an end.

But now, as that man blasted apart the weapons of the Death God, he reeled in shock.

Despite his shock, several thousand years of cultivation had instilled in him the will to not give up until the final moment. Such character did not belong solely to humans. While great waves crashed through his mind, Zoros continued the fight.

With a screech, he ordered all the Underworld Nether Attendants to withdraw.

At the same time, countless Ghost Kings and ghost generals charged at Tang Jie.

Since this human could counter the Death God weapons, and it seemed like he alone could do so, then he would drown him under the ordinary ghosts. Once he was dead, the Underworld Nether Attendants would rule the battlefield.

Zoros’s plan was simple and direct. While the Nether Attendants’ withdrawal made the battle more difficult, it was better than having them all wiped out by Tang Jie.

As the Nether Attendants withdrew, Tang Jie suddenly threw up blood, his body swaying.

He’s at his limit? Zoros thought in surprise.

The ghosts were still charging over, and Tang Jie hadn’t come under any sort of powerful attack yet. The only reason he could have thrown up blood was his battle with the Nether Attendants.

Zoros’s first thought was that this was the price Tang Jie had to pay for destroying the Death God weapons.

After all, what sort of existences were Death God weapons? Even if that human could destroy them, it couldn’t be done so easily, without the slightest price.

Meanwhile, as the ghosts converged and the Nether Attendants retreated, Tang Jie put on an expression of relief and began to fly back to the rear.

Clearly, he had no plans on fighting the ghosts and wanted to use this opportunity to rest.

Zoros immediately sensed that something was wrong. If this man were given time to rest, then when the Underworld Nether Attendants came forth again, this man would once more be able to utilize his powers.

He screeched again, halting the retreat of the Nether Attendants.

The Nether Attendants once more advanced at the cultivators.

Helpless, Tang Jie could only return, as he was the only one who could deal with the Death God weapons.

The Weapon Mantra was used again and again, and the Death God weapons shattered one by one.

Each one broken was another stab to Zoros’s hypothetical heart.

He could only comfort himself with the thought that this man was at his limit.

But the tenacity of humans was on full display, and even when Tang Jie was fatigued, exhausted, and throwing up blood, he kept going, moving among the Underworld Nether Attendants and slaying them. Of the three hundred Nether Attendants, Tang Jie had already killed a third.

When one hundred Nether Attendants had fallen, Tang Jie began to sway, but he refused to fall, continuing to attack again and again. His body was drenched in blood—some from ghosts, some from himself, and some from other cultivators. His face was as pale as a terminally-ill patient and written all over with fatigue, and his body shuddered from over-exhaustion.

But he fought on.

It was a miracle, like a war god who knew no retreat.

All of the cultivators were moved by this willpower and began to regain their morale.

They fought even more desperately, their wills even more resolved.

One cultivator after another came to protect Tang Jie, helping him fend off the attacks of the ordinary ghosts so that Tang Jie could focus solely on the Nether Attendants. By the end, Tang Jie wasn’t even flying under his own power, Yuan Tianzhong summoning a cloud to hold him up so that he could save as much strength as possible.

The number of dead Nether Attendants climbed to 150.

He’s on his last legs, his last legs!

Zoros silently swore, hoping, praying, cursing, and waiting.

But the miracle never came, and the Underworld Nether Attendants continued to die.

When the number reached 180, Zoros finally realized that something was wrong.

How was this guy still going?

If he was on his last legs at 50, how could he kill twice that number again just by gritting his teeth?

Zoros had never watched “Saint Seiya” before, nor did he believe in anything like willpower being able to replace energy.

If gritting one’s teeth were all it took, the chiliocosm would have been ruled by many-teethed fiends already.

Thus, when 180 Nether Attendants had died, he finally got suspicious.

He began to shriek and order the Nether Attendants to retreat.

Tang Jie’s body suddenly swayed so hard that he almost fell off his cloud.

This made Zoros hesitate just a little.

So Tang Jie took him up on his offer, gritted his teeth, got to his feet, and killed a few more Nether Attendants.

Hesitation became resolve, and the Nether Attendants continued their retreat, not stopping no matter how poor Tang Jie’s condition seemed.

Seeing this, Tang Jie laughed and said, “You should stick around!”

All his previous exhaustion and helplessness vanishing, he shot forward at the Nether Attendants like a lightning bolt, his finger striking several Death God weapons in a row.

Zoros finally confirmed that he had fallen for a trap.

This human had been acting the entire time.
