Atticus’s Odyssey: Reincarnated Into A Playground
Chapter 1237: Little RiskChapter 1237: Little Risk
“Destroy one beacon to advance to the next stage.”
The words had barely dropped before Atticus’s mind ran like a supercomputer.
’So they’re beacons.’
He fixed his eyes on the orb of light beneath them.
“Surround it,” he said suddenly, and the group vanished from the skies, appearing all around the orb, cold eyes cautiously glancing around the haze.
’The other lights must be the other beacons,’ Atticus thought, focusing on the numerous lights shining through the haze in the distance.
’Other groups.’ As he realized, he began to understand the structure of this scenario.
’Each group is protecting one beacon. Destroying one allows you to ascend to the next scenario.’ He thought. ’If our beacon is destroyed, then we’ll most likely get pulled out of the competition entirely.’ Atticus’s gaze turned cold. He couldn’t have that.
’We have to defend and also attack.’ He fixed his gaze on the beacons in the distance. To destroy one, they had to move from their positions.
’It’s not movable.’ He glanced below the beacon, which looked as though the orb had fused into the ground. They couldn’t move it with them.
’We have to split up into two teams.’ Atticus concluded. One had to defend, and the other had to attack. It was the only way.
Less than a nanosecond had passed since the goal had been announced and the others had remained silent to allow Atticus think. Now, he had decided their next course of action.
“Ozeroth, Grandpa, and Zenon would defend the orb. Aric and I will attack,” Atticus said quickly, eliciting a grunt from Ozeroth almost immediately.
“Bond—”
“I know what you’re about to say,” Atticus cut in before Ozeroth could continue. “Think about it, what god would stay behind to defend their orb? They’ll probably try to destroy an orb as soon as possible. Which means, if you stay behind…” he trailed off.
“A god will come…” Ozeroth finished his words. A grin spread across his face almost instantly. “Alright, bond! I’ll defend this orb!” he said confidently, unable to hide his excitement.
Atticus maintained an impassive face. He hid the fact that he had basically just manipulated the spirit well.
The truth was, the orb was the most important part of this scenario. Once it’s gone, the world is out of the Virelenna.
No god would be stupid enough to leave their orb unless they had someone they absolutely trusted who could protect it.
’At least in the beginning of the scenario, most would try to defend and would only leave at a later time,’ Atticus predicted.
It wasn’t a hundred percent accurate, considering he didn’t know much about what the others were capable of.
Atticus nodded towards Magnus and Zenon, who returned his nod. Then met eyes with Aric, who returned his look.
“Let’s go,” he said, and both of them blurred, their figures tearing into the haze, heading towards the nearest beacon at fast speed.
’The beacon should be safe.’ Atticus tried to peer his mind away from the beacon and focus on the task at hand.
The thick fog made it impossible to see past a certain range. It was impossible to see everything going on.
Everywhere was dark, and there was only one source of light, their only guides, the beacons.
If their beacon was under attack, it was impossible for them to know once they’d left the base.
This was why Atticus wanted someone he knew for certain could handle everything. Even a god.
He suspected the gods would remain in their bases for now, but he had left Ozeroth behind because of the small margin that he was wrong.
Atticus and Aric moved at the same pace towards the nearest beacon.
Until now, all Atticus noticed about this world was the ruined buildings and the numerous debris that filled the streets. It was as though this world had undergone an apocalypse just before they were sent here.
Atticus noted another thing. Though it looked like something had ravaged the world, there were no bodies. No blood. No signs of life.
They soon burst out from the ruined city and entered into a forest. At this point, Atticus estimated that they had traveled for over a thousand kilometers. It was a whole lot.
’This is the closest beacon?’ Atticus’s gaze was serious.
The light was shining brightly as though it was close, but the farther they moved, the farther it got.
’How much farther away is it?’ he wondered. It was as though the battle was taking place across continents.
He sent a glance towards Aric to see that the man’s expression was still as impassive as ever.
His every step seemed to propel him forward like an explosion. His build was compact, just a shy away from being muscular.
And he seemed as though he was constantly primed for battle. Like he wanted it. Like he craved it.
Aric turned and suddenly met Atticus’s eyes. He held it for a second before nodding. “Thank you,” Aric broke the silence and said.
“For what?”
“Choosing me to fight for our world. I know no greater honor.”
Atticus stared into his eyes. “You of all people know the reason we’re here is because of my selfish goal.”
Only the Eldorians were privy to the real reason for the Virelenna, to ascend to the Middle Planes.
To an outside perspective, many would call Atticus selfish. Eldoralth was thriving and growing at a steady pace. New technologies were being discovered. New potions and weapons were being introduced.
They would have continued to thrive if they had been left alone. But they had joined a competition that could spell their doom, because Atticus wanted to ascend.
Aric shook his head.
“All goals are meant to be selfish. You owe no one anything. You built this new world with your own power, you’ve earned the right to decide where it goes.”
Atticus blinked. He could swear this was the most he had heard Aric speak.
“Even if it brings about the destruction of the world?” he asked after a second.
“Is your goal to destroy the world?” Aric asked.
“No.”
“Would your actions usher a new age of prosperity for the world?”
“…Yes.”
“Is the world’s survival forever guaranteed if we remain where we are?”
“No.”
Aric nodded.
“The way I see it, the world would’ve been destroyed without your help in the first place. Your actions are bringing about a new age, a better one. There’s a little risk, but the rewards are even more rewarding.”
Atticus almost laughed. Aric had just called the destruction of their world ’a little risk.’ He smiled instead. This was their first real conversation, and he was already liking him.
’No wonder Kael turned out the way he did.’
