Chapter 1259: Legion
“Godspeed Grace.”
Lyress saw no signs of movement. No streak of light. No sound of air rupturing. Only the cold sense of death gripped her. And for the first time since the battle began, her crazed smile vanished.
As the blade wreathed in crimson flames kissed her neck, her body moved before thought could form.
An unsuspecting undead replaced her in a blink, only to be incinerated to ash before the blade even landed.
The slash tore through the air, carving deep, endless gashes through the pillars behind. Atticus’ eyes flickered across the wrecked battlefield, scanning, searching.
She had swapped herself with an undead right as his katana was about to slice her neck. Which meant…
He turned sharply, eyes locking on the scattered remains of the undead army.
’There.’
His gaze found her, Lyress, standing amid a sea of undead.
Her breathing came ragged, hand pressed to her neck where death had nearly touched.
She looked up to meet his gaze, and a breathless silence hung between them. Then, their eyes flashed, cold and resolute.
They moved.
“Fusion.”
A dark crimson glow erupted from Atticus’ body. He became the four basic elements.
His descent left trails of searing embers in his wake as he crashed into the horde, releasing a blastwave that rippled outward in concussive rings, tearing through the undead remnants with sheer force.
The haze had barely settled before Lyress’ voice rang out, sharp and cold.
“Merge.”
Atticus narrowed his eyes. The ground trembled beneath him.
The scattered corpses of the undead rose, then shot upward, fusing together into massive clusters of mangled flesh and bone.
In seconds, towering undead titans formed, each radiating so much pressure, the cavern itself shuddered.
High above, Lyress floated like a goddess of death, eyes glowing with wild purple embers. Her earlier panic was gone.
With a flick of her wrist, the titans surged toward Atticus, fists splitting the air with deafening force.
The haze parted just enough to reveal Atticus, katana already half sheathed.
There was no flash. No burst. No motion.
Only the sudden appearance of countless slashes, folding into colossal crescent arcs that shuddered the air as they roared forward.
The slashes tore into the undead titans like scanning lights, then shredded them.
The titans split in half, mangled flesh and bone cleaving away as flames erupted across their forms. They collapsed in smoldering heaps.
But before they even hit the ground, Lyress’ crazed voice boomed.
“Come, my children! Rise! Show this lost soul what it means to stare into the jaws of madness!”
But Atticus had no intention of waiting for a powerup.
He was upon her in a flash, katana gleaming mid swing, but before the strike could land, a pulse of purple aura imploded around Lyress, repelling him backward with force.
The aura surged downward in a column of violet, crashing into the ground before splattering out like ink across parchment.
Then came the rise.
It began from the helmet up, headpieces breaking the surface like buried kings returning to life. Then the shoulders… the arms… until full figures emerged.
A legion.
Imposing undead soldiers, fully armored from head to toe. One hand gripped spears, the other held massive vertical shields that stretched from shin to neck.
Lyress raised her arm, and the legion heard her.
Their eyes burned with ominous purple fire as they fixed their gaze on Atticus. Then, in perfect unison, they marched.
They collective stomp shook the cavern to its core. Lyress gave not even a second of respite. She flashed Atticus a crazed smile just as her hand dropped.
The legion blasted forward like torpedoes in water, spears piercing out, massive shields blocking their bodies.
But Atticus only took one step forward, and his will roared.
A crimson pillar erupted from him as his will flooded the space. The force of it slammed into the legion, sending them flying away.
Their eyes glowed fiercely as they stared at the child god in front of them.
Atticus had become a living inferno. His will roared around him like a storm of flames, seemingly burning the air itself.
The temperature in the cavern had spiked to unseen levels. Metals in the surrounding had long since melted, and the sands that formed beneath the cracked ground had begun to crystallize.
Despite being undead, the legion army seemed to pause under the oppressive weight that was Atticus’ presence, suddenly unable to meet his piercing gaze.
He was a god. None of them were worthy of being in his presence.
“Don’t just stand there. Attack!” Lyress’ booming voice seemed to break the tension that had gripped the cavern. But it was Atticus who moved first.
A twitch, and he was upon the legion army, the word rolling out:
“Fusion.”
The white, black, and purple lights of the light, space, and spirit element swirled in his eyes, and his figure turned translucent as an energy that reeked of life surged out of him.
The undead legion recoiled as the fusion energy washed over them, their strength dropping in an instant.
There was something about that energy, something that denied their very existence. None of them were given even a second to comprehend what it was.
Atticus flared, and with a burst of speed, he tore into the ranks of the undead legion, katana dancing in his arm.
Thousands of heads flew in less than a second, and yet, Atticus showed no signs of stopping.
He moved like a streak of light, tearing through the ranks of the undead legion without pause.
His fusion energy washed over any undead he came in contact with, weakening them, and his katana moved to behead them in savage strikes.
Heads hit the ground before any of them could realize.
Despite the ongoing scene of her undead getting mauled down, Lyress showed no signs of panic. She only grinned and raised her hands.
More purple light spread across the ground like ink, and more soldiers came rushing out from the ground, instantly joining the onslaught against Atticus.
But that wasn’t all. Lyress’ eyes glowed purple, and suddenly, each soldier in the legion exploded in a surge of purple light, their powers intensifying to staggering levels.
Atticus appeared in front of one, fusion energy spreading out to envelop it. However, the soldier’s aura surged, fighting off the energy.
Its spear whipped out towards Atticus, piercing straight toward him. But Atticus didn’t even flinch.
The spear turned into burning cinders before it could even touch him. His katana flashed, and its head fell from its neck.
The other soldiers in the legion seemed to take it as a signal. They each erupted in a surge of energy before shooting towards him, spears piercing out.
