Chapter 1318: Free
The current version of the Cloud Spell was far bigger than what Khan had summoned on Zedekiel. His crackling, wild, dense mana hung in the sky like a bright moon that had invaded that barren planet’s atmosphere, sending its light far past the quadrant’s edges.
The Cloud actually did far more than that. Its destructive influence spread wherever its light shone, shattering air, symphony, and matter, raising trails of minute dust into the sky. The area right around Khan remained comparatively stable, but that was mostly due to the white landmass created through Liiza’s mana.
The two black aliens stared sternly at the ominous, loud spell, their scarlet eyes struggling to endure its blinding radiance. Strangely, their energy didn’t affect that thundering mana, but that wouldn’t solve their problems anyway.
Khan’s mana had already proven itself capable of surviving the glowing black smoke briefly, and something that big was bound to endure it even longer. The two aliens weren’t confident they could face the spell head-on.
Luckily for the aliens, Khan had no plans to unleash the Cloud on them.
Releasing so much mana at once made Khan feel emptied, but not due to a lack of energy. His core had already refilled his body, but that sensation lingered in his mind, hinting at something deeper.
Khan didn’t release the Cloud to create a massive spell. He had wanted to unleash the very enlightenment he had obtained on Zedekiel, and there it was, shining and raging in all its magnificence.
The Cloud embodied the core of Khan’s power, the true nature of his element. It was the crystallization of his destruction born from his desperation. It was Khan, but in a different form, acting as a perfect reflection of his being.
However, it was also terribly wrong.
Khan lifted his scarred, tattooed arm at the Cloud, replicating what he had done on Zedekiel during his battle against Lord Mighty. The spell accepted his invitation, slowly descending toward him, resembling a blinding meteorite ready to extinguish every trace of life from the planet.
Still, when the Cloud’s fabric touched Khan’s hand, his skin rejected it, pushing it away by a few meters.
"No," Khan gently muttered. "This isn’t us. This was never us."
There was an unanswered question in Khan’s life, something he had never dwelt too long on. It was an issue that dated as far back as the Second Impact, which no one could solve. It was impossible to find out anyway, but it was strangely relevant at that moment.
What element would Khan have developed if it weren’t for the Second Impact? That aspect usually came from a combination of inborn traits and specific personality. Still, the tragic event from over twenty-two years ago had affected Khan before he could mature on his own.
The chaos element came from the Nak, and the nightmares had affected Khan’s development, twisting his personality accordingly. He was a child of that tragedy and had used it as a foundation for his power.
Differentiating between inborn and inherited traits was impossible for Khan so late in his life. He wouldn’t even know where to begin. His personality after twenty-seven years was basically set in stone, but there was something worth considering.
"This is what the Nak have forced us to be," Khan exclaimed, talking to the Cloud. "This is what we had to become because we were trapped. Because they cursed us."
Khan couldn’t help but focus on his still-stretched arm and the blue tattoos running through it, reaching his shoulder and back. His thundering mana would have been perfect and complete if his life were only about his curse, but that wasn’t the case anymore.
"But we are free now," Khan continued. "We don’t have to be like the Nak made us. We can let go."
The Cloud didn’t initially understand what Khan meant, but their minds were one. The spell knew and sensed what he was feeling, and those conclusions were undeniable.
The grand mission was virtually over. Khan had succeeded in finding the Nak. He was only a couple of months away from their home world, which acted as a permanent landmark in his mind, reminding him of how close he was.
Moreover, Khan now had a life outside his curse that promised to grow increasingly busier. Becoming a father was a task so great that the Nak’s mission couldn’t even begin to compare, at least for Khan. The nightmares and all his suffering were bound to take the backseat soon enough, if they didn’t already do that.
Therefore, there was no need for that absolute, wanton destruction anymore. Khan didn’t need to break free of anything. He was happy. He had won. His element simply had to reflect all that now.
The Cloud resonated with Khan’s state of mind. Its thunderous cries quietened, and its crackling sparks melted into bright, gaseous energy that gathered into multiple trails that converged toward Khan.
The entirety of the spell split and flowed back inside Khan, but no clear power-up happened. His aura didn’t intensify, and nothing changed in his appearance. He actually felt quieter and calmer, as if he had lost his violent anger.
Of course, Khan didn’t care for appearances. He lowered his arm and gaze, activating his cells’ power. The hole on his side and the cuts and burns from the previous exchanges instantly closed, replaced by healthy skin, but the process didn’t stop there.
Sparks crackled over Khan’s arms, reopening the many scars that littered them. The wounds themselves seemed to release that energy, but an instantaneous healing process soon replaced that, closing anything that could attempt to bleed.
After a mere second, Khan could lift his arms before his eyes, shining blue light on their unharmed and intact state. The hideous scars that had afflicted him for years were nowhere to be seen now. His body had finally rejected those permanent marks, signaling a deeper change in his existence as a whole.
"Funny," Khan scoffed. "I spent so long hating these things, believing I was unworthy of touching anyone. It turns out I was the reason they didn’t heal."
Khan lowered his arms, lifting his gaze at the two hovering aliens, wearing a casual smile. "Of course, I would have never gotten this on my own. All the merit goes to my wife. I swear, I’d marry her again if I could."
The two black aliens remained relatively inexpressive, frozen in their stern inspections. It was unclear whether they understood Khan, but he didn’t really care.
"Now that I think about it," Khan continued, tilting his head in thought. "I might get the chance to do that. My family wants a public celebration anyway."
Khan quickly shook his head, snapping out of his pensive state to address the aliens again. "I guess I can just do that anyway if I feel like. Well, if my wife feels like. Marriage, right?"
Khan chuckled by himself, ultimately heaving a sigh as he crossed his now-intact arms. His expression grew colder as his eyes darted left and right between the two aliens, and traces of his previous wild anger flowed into his aura again.
"It’s truly funny," Khan announced. "To think that my first act as a free man would be to summon my destruction again."
