When Raze placed his hand over Bronto’s face, it wasn’t just an act of dominance, it was a calculated move. He had done it with one clear purpose: to unravel the enchantment that distorted Bronto’s identity.
The robe Bronto wore was cloaked in powerful dark magic, the kind the Dark Guild was notorious for. But such enchantments weren’t exclusive to them. Raze, a high-level mage with an extensive understanding of magic circles, rune theory, and enchantments, was more than capable of not only recognizing the spell but reverse-engineering it with frightening ease.
The illusion faded almost instantly.
Bronto hadn’t even realized what had happened. His mind was still racing, still trying to process the healing of his legs, still trying to strategize an escape from the chaos unfolding around him. That was until he stepped toward the others, and the stunned silence that followed was broken by a chorus of gasps and whispers.
“That’s the Guild Leader, the Guild Leader of the Underfang!”
“No way… and those robes, he was the one fighting Raze!”
“I knew it,” Panla said, wincing slightly as Safa healed the gash on her shoulder. Several other teachers were still recovering from far worse injuries. “When I saw that lightning strike again, I thought it might be him. But why…?”
Bronto’s hand instinctively rose to his face. He could feel the absence of magic, no distortion, no protective illusion, just bare skin and the truth it exposed.
“How did you…?” he muttered, staring at Raze in disbelief. “Did you reverse the enchantment? But how could a mere student, “
Before he could finish, Dame shoved him roughly, grabbing his arms with firm restraint.
“You should’ve figured it out by now,” Dame said through gritted teeth. “Raze isn’t just any student.”
Around them, the students buzzed with hushed chatter, their eyes flickering between Bronto and the others. Confusion painted their faces, but a storm of questions was brewing.
“I don’t understand,” Chiba spoke up, his voice laced with concern. “Were all those people in dark robes members of the Underfang Guild? Are they part of the Dark Guild too? Was the academy unaware of this the whole time?”
A loud voice cut through the growing noise like a blade. “They’re not part of the Dark Guild.”
It was Londo, his rare voice sharp and commanding as he walked forward. The students turned toward him, hanging on every word.
“These people are from the Underfang Guild,” Londo explained. “They disguised themselves as members of the Dark Guild to justify their actions. Isn’t that right?” He paused, his gaze fixed on Bronto, waiting for an answer.
Bronto remained silent.
But silence wouldn’t protect him.
With a crack like a tree branch snapping underfoot, Dame twisted one of Bronto’s fingers, breaking it cleanly. The sound made several students flinch.
“Answer him,” Dame demanded. “You attacked all these students today, they deserve to know why. And don’t forget, we’ve got a talented healer with us. I can break more than ten fingers if I need to.”
The threat, paired with the first brutal act, was more than enough to loosen Bronto’s tongue.
“Alright!” Bronto hissed through clenched teeth. “He’s right. We were only pretending to be part of the Dark Guild. We have no actual affiliation with them.”
Murmurs spread quickly through the crowd.
The teachers, already suspecting something was amiss when the portal appeared and the transfer students were assigned, had their worst fears confirmed. Still, not everything made sense.
Redrick, Luka, Panla, and Diana had finished recovering. Their eyes were sharp once again, ready to fight, to protect, to act, standing alongside the others.
“Then why attack us?” Redrick asked, stepping forward. “If you’re not part of the Dark Guild, what was the point?”
Londo turned abruptly, a harsh glare in his eyes. The question stirred something in him. As if it would’ve made sense if it was the Dark Guild. But this… this crossed a different line. He clenched his fists but said nothing.
He would follow Raze’s lead, for now.
Bronto didn’t answer fast enough. Dame’s hand lashed out again, snap. Another finger broken.
“If you hesitate, we can’t trust a word you say,” Dame said coldly. He then glanced at Liam, who gave a subtle nod. The two exchanged a knowing wink.
“The portal,” Bronto finally said. “It’s a new one, an unexplored dimension. We’ve been aiming to find a mid-tier portal we could conquer ourselves.”
He spoke faster now, fear pushing the words out. “Too hard, and we’d sell the intel to stronger guilds. Too easy, and we’d clear it ourselves to collect the dimensional crystal from the boss.”
“The issue was losing talented members during the process. We entered this portal and ran into one of those bird creatures. Based on its power, we weren’t sure if the dimension was high- or mid-tier.”
“So,” he continued bitterly, “we decided to let you go in first. Fight your way through, reveal the threats, and then we’d come in afterward. Either clean up or gather information to make it easier.”
That answer explained some of the suspicions Raze had, but not all. His eyes narrowed. What he really wanted to know was why they disguised themselves as the Dark Guild in the first place. That reeked of higher-level manipulation, someone else pulling the strings. And someone had planted the Dark-enchanted robe in the academy as well.
There were still too many questions.
“I have a suggestion,” Raze said, stepping forward with authority in his voice. “We find the exit of this portal as soon as possible. We’ll take Bronto back with us, and get the full story later.”
Normally, it would be strange for the teachers to take orders from a student. But this wasn’t just any student. Raze had saved them, again. And the truth was, the teachers trusted him more than they trusted the man bound in chains.
The instructors moved to the front of the group, guiding the students as they prepared to navigate out of the dimension.
Raze and Dame stayed at the rear, keeping close to their prisoner.
As the group set off, Raze turned to Bronto, his tone low and steady.
“Now,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, “I have some questions of my own.”
