Blake did not close the door behind him as he walked in because he never thought that anyone would come inside the orphanage this bright in the day. The kids were not allowed to go out after curfew and before morning came, so why would the kids not maximize the time they were allowed outside?
Blake did not want to create any ruckus. Even though he had been discovered, that didn’t mean that it was too late for him to quickly ditch the area as soon as he got his hands on the evolution catalyst.
So Blake ignored the fact that his back was currently exposed to whoever it was that entered the room and continued extending his hand to grab the evolution catalyst.
With the evolution catalyst secured in his hand, the system then acknowledged that he was successful.
[Evolution Catalyst secured. Beginning gathering nether from the surroundings. Estimation: 6:29:32]
[Please hold on until the timer reaches zero.]
With the evolution catalyst secured and the system beginning its timer, Blake then did a 180 degrees turn as he prepared to shove anyone who saw him out of his way. He wasn’t close with anyone in particular with his roommates, and he wouldn’t need to owe them any explanation if he just disappeared once again.
However, when Blake finally turned his head around, his face froze as he met a similar shocked and frozen expression from the person in front of him.
.....
“B… Brother…? Is that really you…?”
Despite hearing the familiar voice that he knew too well, Blake froze in place as he stared at the little girl in front of him. A lot can change in just a month and a half, but the face of the girl that he knew did not change even a little bit as tears began to well up on the edges of her eyes.
“Amy…” Blake muttered slowly, making sure that he did not scare the girl in front of him. He didn’t know what to say after suddenly disappearing for so long as he didn’t even know how he was transported to the demon realm in the first place, but he certainly couldn’t just tell her that.
“I…” Blake was about to apologize for his sudden disappearance, making sure his tone was as soft as possible so that she would not be wary of him. But before Blake could finish stuttering his sentence, Amy shot forward with her hands spread outward, catching Blake in her arms.
“Brother…” She muttered as she buried her face in Blake’s chest. Blake’s body which used to be so frail had now somehow felt stronger and more robust to her.
“Wher… Where… Have you b… Been…?”
Blake might not be able to feel his chest dampening because the clothes that he wore were literally resistant to many kinds of damage, even protecting him from Cyra’s death hug before they made the covenant. How could a small bit of water penetrate the clothes material?
However, Blake could clearly tell from her difficulties talking that Amy was indeed in tears. He still did not know what to say, even his earlier thoughts about apologizing didn’t seem right after seeing her reaction to just seeing him.
But in the end, that was the only thing that he could think of.
“I’m sorry, Amy…” Blake said as he rubbed the girl’s head very carefully to make sure he didn’t hurt her with his current strength.
As Blake’s apology entered her ears, hearing his soft voice after a long time, and feeling the gentle yet firm stroke of his hand rubbing her head, Amy’s tears burst out of their socket as she released a full-blown crying noise from her mouth that would be heard all over the orphanage building.
The building was quite large, making it possible for someone to not be able to hear any sounds if they were at both ends of the building. But his room was located rather in the middle of the building, there would be no way someone would not have heard Amy crying.
Blake knew that there was no getting out of this situation now, but he didn’t care about how many questions he would have to answer or what kind of bullshit story he has to make up later, but for now, Blake only cared for the little girl that cried her eyes out on his chest.
As he let Amy vent her pent-up emotions on him, the situation that he had expected soon came to realization as the whole orphanage heard her crying and hurriedly ran over to where her voice had come from.
The caretakers were the ones that arrived first as she recognized her voice, even if it was her crying voice as they took a lot of care of her. Different from Blake that could not use mana and was deemed to be someone with a slim chance of success in the future, Amy was a rare talent that even got a full scholarship at a prestigious mage academy.
Blake also got a full scholarship to his name, but his inability to use mana made him unable to go to a specialized mage academy and instead only to an average institution.
Upon seeing the scene inside the room, the caretakers were shocked for a few seconds as they saw that the kid that had suddenly disappeared one day had returned. A few of them had their eyebrows raised as they already had so many questions in their head about the kid, but even more questions appeared when they saw the clothes that the kid was wearing.
They know that the orphanage didn’t have that kind of clothing. Not only was the model of the clothes unusual but the material of the clothes also seemed to be made with something expensive and high quality. Something that an orphan boy would not be able to get unless someone gave it to him or either he stole it.
The caretakers wanted to begin their barrage of questions right away, but seeing Amy was still crying in his arms, they let her finish first before they started their q and a session.
