223 Unexpected
It didn’t take long for Blake to walk back towards the orphanage, at most a quarter of an hour. The sun had already long gone from an hour away anyway, there was no need for him to hurry as Amy wouldn’t be going anywhere. Instead, he took his time and thought about the things that he wanted to say and his apology properly.
However, Blake certainly did not expect that by the time he arrived at the supposedly quiet orphanage that had entered its curfew, he would see a group of people standing right in front of the door of the orphanage.
A car was parked right beside the opened front gate, and from the unique design of the car, anyone could tell that it was a police car.
‘Did something happen to Amy!?’ Blake quickened his pace, his breeze walk turned to a sprint as he covered a 100-meter distance in just a couple of seconds.
He had never seen a police car in the orphanage before as the police never made a visit to the orphanage or anything like that. If their car was parked in the orphanage, then something must have happened. And one of the reasons might be related to Amy considering that he didn’t see her off back into the orphanage.
And he was the one who took Amy to walk around past the curfew. If anything happened to her, it was his responsibility.
However, when Blake stepped his foot into the orphanage’s area and saw Amy hidden behind the group of people, Blake heaved a sigh of relief, knowing that Amy was back in the orphanage safe and sound.
Quite contrary to Blake’s ease, the moment he stepped foot inside and the group of people saw his face, the caretakers were taken aback by his sudden appearance before they instantly pointed their fingers at him, “It’s him, that’s Blake.”
Hearing his name was called, Blake turned his head towards the caretakers, then to the other people that they were talking to. And with their car parked in front of the gate, it was to be expected that the people that the caretakers were talking with were none other than the police.
.....
There were only two of them, one was talking with the caretakers while the other held a tablet that showed a video that Blake couldn’t see from his current angle.
After hearing the caretakers shout his name and point their fingers toward him, the two policemen then turned their attention towards Blake as the talking policeman then stepped forward and started talking to him.
“Are you Blake?”
“Yes?”
“Can you confirm that this is indeed you?” The other policeman that carried the tablet then stepped closer towards him, showing the tablet and replaying the video that had stopped playing.
The video was taken from a tall angle, too tall for a handheld camera. It was more like a drone had taken the shot from above, but the stationary and stable video suggested that it was not a moving drone camera. ‘CCTV?’
The video showed an urban setting, with house walls standing beside a smaller road, where the focus of the camera was placed on. In the middle of the small road, 4 people were present, or more particularly, 4 boys.
A single boy was seen running towards the group of three boys, and in just a second, the lone boy’s fist planted itself firmly onto the frontmost boy of the group, making him fall to the ground before the lone boy continued moving his body and kicked the two other boys hard on their thighs, hard enough for them to not get back up again after falling down.
‘It was the CCTV recording of me beating up those guys…’ Blake instantly recognized what the recording was showing even before the video showed him beating up the three boys. With his memory, it was easy for him to instantly recognize the shape, color, and other characteristics of the walls and road that he had been in earlier.
Blake already knew that he was caught red-handed, with concrete evidence, so he just stayed silent after the video was finished playing, ending at the part where he broke Jake’s arm and started leaving the area.
“Are you the one in the video? The one that beat up three other kids?” The policeman asked once again.
“Yes,” Blake gave a short reply. No matter what he would say, it was a fact that he was the one in the video, beating up Jake and his lackeys.
“Then can you please come with us? We would do some questioning and make sure that you do not have violent tendencies that might have endangered the neighborhood.”
“But sir!” Amy stepped out from behind the caretakers and started speaking.
“They were the ones who were bullying brothers and hurting him for years and years without stopping! They were the ones who should be reported to the police!”
The policeman’s eyebrows raised when he heard Amy’s shout, and the speed that he turned his head towards her said that he had a piece or two to share with Amy when he heard what she told him. And albeit only for a split second, Blake could see the glare that the policeman had when Amy questioned him.
However, when the policeman turned his head towards the little girl, not a single sign of aggression was evident from both his facial expression and his tone of speaking.
“Yes sweetheart, that’s why we want to bring him to the police station and question him about what he has done. We will make sure we hear every side of the story.”
“Then… Brother would not be locked up in jail?” Amy asked once again, her eyes darting between the police officer and Blake.
“Of course not, your brother is still a kid after all. Even if he’s guilty, he would be put in a disciplinary facility for kids instead of jail.” The police officer smiled as sweetly as he could.
It might have worked for Amy, but for him that had seen the officer’s leaked true emotion, Blake could only stare at the police officer with squinted eyes.
“But sir, will Brother be-” Amy wanted to start another round of questioning, but this time, Blake cut him off before she earned more of the policeman’s ire.
“Don’t worry, Amy, he said he would only be giving me questions. Nothing bad would happen,” Blake smiled wide, assuring Amy that he would be okay.
Seeing that she smiled back at him and there was not a sign of her being angry or scared of him, Blake was already content, he did not care what the police officers wanted to do to him anymore. He would be gone in a couple more hours anyway. After being questioned by the police, he would use the remaining time he had to say a proper goodbye to Amy and tell her to wait for him to come and get her later.
“You heard your brother, everything will be fine,” The policeman said before bringing his focus back onto Blake.
“Now young man, come with me.”
The police officer then brought out a handcuff, which led to Amy almost shouting again, but Blake’s smile and his head shaking ceased her from doing so.
“Pal, please keep her safe,” Blake whispered to his gorilla friend before he turned his body away.
Following the police officer’s lead, Blake followed them back to their car, giving a last smile to Amy before disappearing from the gate to the back of the semi-transparent wall of the orphanage. Leaving Robus to stand guard at the orphanage.
The police car had its windows tinted black, so black that he couldn’t see anything inside and saw his own reflection instead. He thought that he would be put in the backseat of the car while the two police officers would sit in the front. But the talking police officer was going to the front side alone while the other one that had the tablet went into the backside of the car with him.
Before he got into the car, Blake said, “Sir, what she said was correct, they used to beat me up all the time. You should be able to find the footage from about two months ago, it also happened near the convenience store.”
“You could see that kid used magic and kick-” Blake hasn’t even done explaining anything as the police officer in the front cut him off.
Different from the way he treated Amy, Blake didn’t even feel the policeman’s fake facade as he was treated with his real emotions.
“Shut up, dud.” The answer genuinely surprised him, but remembering where he was now, Blake quickly nodded in understanding as he kept his mouth shut.
The policemen then opened up the car door, releasing a cool blast of air conditioning from inside the car to the outside.
After hearing the police officer’s answering him with his real thoughts, Blake thought that he would not be surprised by anything anymore, but he was proven wrong when he finally got in the car and saw who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car.
‘Jake…?’ Different from him that had a handcuff on his hand, Jake had his hands free, even his legs were up on the dashboard, sitting very comfortably inside the police car.
And when he heard the first sentence that came out of Jake’s mouth after he saw the police officer come in, his genuine surprise turned into pure bewilderment.
“What took you so long, dad?”
