Chapter 68: Demons (1)
In the midst of his meditation, Blake’s concentration was suddenly interrupted as he heard faint voices coming from a certain direction in the forest.
And when he opened up his eyes, he found out that he wasn’t the only one who heard those sounds as Robus was practically staring him right in his eyes with a questioning look.
From that stare alone, the two nodded their heads to each other as they understood that they both heard the sounds.
But different from Robus who was only curious about what those strange sounds that he had never heard before after living so long in the forest were, Blake had actually heard voices.
Real voices. Not just sounds or unknown noises.
It was really really faint that Blake couldn’t make out what those voices were saying.
However, Blake was certain that those voices were saying something that resembled actual language.
.....
And from the sound and tone of those voices, Blake would bet all of his current possession and all the money that he didn’t have that those voices certainly didn’t belong to Vera, which was the only other demon in the forest that he knew could talk and communicate with actual words.
Even with all the high-leveled demonic beasts that he met so far, none of them had the ability to talk. Not even Robus.
Blake could only understand clearly what Robus meant with every sound that the gorilla made with his mouth because of their covenant with each other.
Without the covenant, Blake wouldn’t be able to know the exact words that Robus would be trying to convey to him with Robus’ series of ‘Rr’ or ‘RR’.
But just a few seconds ago, Blake heard another voice that he didn’t recognize.
It was still very faint that Blake couldn’t make out the details yet, but instead of the silky and smooth voice that Vera had, the faint voice that he heard felt slightly coarse and rugged as if the person who let out the voice was putting in real effort to talk.
But it was still definitely considered to be a voice.
So with his mind and focus on full alert, Blake jumped up to Robus’ back and said, “We’re checking that out. But remember to follow my instructions and don’t go straight into the source of the sound.”
Robus nodded his head in understanding before taking a huge leap forward towards the direction of the voices.
The distance between them and the source of those voices shouldn’t be too far from each other since both Blake and Robus only had a slightly better sense of hearing compared to ordinary humans.
But considering the voice sounded like a shout, the distance should still be quite considerable considering that voices travel far in the forest that didn’t have birds chirping all over and the scarce beasts that needed the effort to be found.
But Blake was still quite wary about it and told Robus to stop jumping after a few leaps since the ground around him would vibrate with Robus’ huge and heavy body jumping all over the place.
Instead, Blake told Robus to walk on his 4 limbs steadily so that the tree trunks near him and the ground beneath his feet didn’t shake every time he took a powerful step.
As the two get closer and closer, they didn’t hear any of those voices again. But Blake and Robus still remembered where they heard those sounds that they were still slowly moving in that direction.
And after walking slowly for a full minute, they finally heard it again.
Just as before, Robus heard another unusual sound and unfamiliar noise, but this time, it was very clear in his ears.
And for Blake, his ears could finally make out what the voices were saying.
“Theghre alsgho noghting heghre. Lhet’s mhove to anoghter plhace!”
Blake only heard one voice shouting. And to say that the voice was speaking words was a compliment since it sounded a quarter gibberish to Blake’s ears.
‘It sounded similar to a baby who had just figured out how to speak...’ Blake thought in his head.
But Blake couldn’t associate the voice with a baby at all since the voice that slurred saying those words was nowhere near a baby’s voice.
Instead of a baby’s high-pitched and relatively cute voice, the voice that Blake just heard sounded like the voice of an old man who smoked a dozen packs a day and hadn’t drank any water for a whole day.
Simplifying it, the voice sounded heavy and coarse at an extreme level.
Blake was already sure that the voice would belong to other demons since he never heard any demon beasts speaking and Vera didn’t have such a voice.
Blake wanted to quickly come over to see what kind of demon had that kind of voice in their throat, but remembering that he had never met any other demons yet except for Vera and the other demon beasts living in the forest, Blake decided to not go over to the demons and hide first to observe the situation.
But of course, with such a huge friend standing behind him, Blake didn’t have any plans on actually standing still in place to observe the situation better.
The voices were quite close, and although he hadn’t seen them yet, if the demons decided to travel in his direction, then there’s no way he could observe anything as the huge gorilla would instantly take their attention.
Blake didn’t know what their response would be when they saw Robus, but considering the words that he heard earlier, he knew those demons were searching for something.
And in a forest filled with demonic beasts, it would be safe for him to assume that demonic beasts would possibly be one of the things they were looking for if not the actual thing that they were currently searching for.
“Stay here for a while okay? I will check the status quo first.”
So Blake told Robus to stay there first while he himself started making his way over to the source of the voice that he had just heard.
Blake didn’t go in a straight line as he didn’t want to run headfirst to the unknown demons.
Instead, Blake circled around a bit while still minding his steps.
And after walking for a few dozen seconds, Blake finally saw it.
