— Kat —

Eleanora knew which tree in the park was the oldest so heading there was easy… but Kat could’ve figured it out on her own. Sadly. Not because of the refined mana senses like Lily, nor just digging through her girlfriend’s memories for the information. No, Kat could figure it out because there was a group of self-important looking people all standing around Mint and the one leading them seem to think he was important. “… and that’s why I deserve a chance to speak to your master,” sneered the man.

Kat debated sicking Eleanora on them before dismissing it. She’d been consistently annoyed at the guards and abusing her own personal one like that didn’t seem like a good idea. Though looking at Mint made it hard to hold onto that conviction. The dryad didn’t look frazzled at all, in fact, she seemed perfect… which was really the hint. It was clear that Mint was barely inhabiting the body, her eyes had no proper life in them, any moves she made were sharp and precise and she wasn’t actually saying anything despite there being a ‘conversation’ going on.

Kat frowned. “Now how do we get passed these guys…” because the important people had formed a ring around Mint and then onlookers and sticky-beaks had formed another dense pocket of people around them. Kat could fly or jump over sure… but they were pressed in close to Mint and Kat wasn’t sure she could even fly without knocking into anyone let alone jumping. Kat didn’t think she was good enough to try.

“I can simply remove them mistress,” stated Eleanora.

“Right… and you can do that without abusing your position?” asked Kat.

“Of course mistress, simply summoning a fist or two above them and drawing attention to them will get people to disperse… and if they do not those hands can be used to remove them afterwards,” insisted Eleanora.

“Ok… two questions. First, don’t you need your gloves for that? Secondly, isn’t that abusing your position?” asked Kat.

“No actually. The gloves I have on may not be quite as efficient as my proper gauntlets but they do work for my techniques. They let me sneak my weapons into high class parties so it’s great. I also have spells that are horribly expensive that can emulate things if I need to as well. As for abusing my position? It’s not technically illegal unless I say something to the people here,” explained Eleanora.

“Not sure that’s what I really wanted to hear… I might still allow it though. Alternative suggestions?” asked Kat.

“Hmm… well your concern is simply speaking with the dryad, Mint, correct?” queried Eleanora.

“That is the main reason I’m here yes,” answered Kat.

“I could simply pick her up then? If she sees you with me, and you wave or something she is unlike to fight my grabbing her body with a hand, and then we can simply leave. Much less threatening if a lot less fun,” continued Eleanora.

*Hmm… I do like that idea a lot more. The only issue is that Lily mentioned Mint was guarding the tree while Thyme was busy. I’m not sure how far away she can get from it. Not from a ‘literal distance’ perspective but more from a ‘not getting into trouble’ one. Though… Thyme is pretty understanding? Perhaps if we run off and then loop back into the park? Or hide in one of the trees here? Hmmm…*

“I’m not against it in principle, in fact it’s a great idea…” Kat trailed off, not quite sure if she wanted to say.

“But she needs to remain guarding the tree?” asked Eleanora anyway.

Kat raised an eyebrow as if to say ‘what do you mean’, not wanting to give away the answer to Eleanora’s question by confirming things or trying to deflect the question. It didn’t work. “I’m guessing based on her dead eyed look that she can’t actually leave… or maybe not ‘can’t’ exactly but that she’s got orders to stick around. Trust me, I’m in the city guard. I see that face all the time at work even if I’m guessing a bit because she’s a dryad. I’m quite certain of it,”

Kat sighed, “Yeah that’s the main point. I didn’t want to admit it and cause her more issues and Thyme is pretty forgiving. I guess someone saw that she was around when she talked to Lily or something? Whatever the case they clearly know she’s here now… which does complicate things. Because she probably should be guarding the tree MORE now from idiots but Thyme is understanding so running away from said idiots isn’t likely to be an issue… unless it would actually be an issue? If that makes sense?”

“Yes… so I say we get rid of the crowd. If she’s got permission to be here and they’re all causing issues… then it’s my duty to remove them for causing disturbance on public property,” insisted Eleanora with a smile.

Kat’s attention was pulled back to Mint’s location… “ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?” yelled the man to Mint, who was in fact clearly NOT listening to him. Kat sighed and turned back to Eleanora who just kept smirking at her.

“Fuck it. Fine,” sighed Kat.

“Excellent,” said Eleanora as she summoned two hands above the tree and then lowered them down avoiding the branches along the way until just above the crowd. Some of them were already taking note and backing up when she snapped her fingers. In that moment, a few things happened.

The first, was the people that looked up, realised what the hands meant and booked it. These people were shortly followed by the second group who noticed people were running and weren’t willing to stick around to find out WHY they were running. The third group proved themselves to not be as intelligent as the first two. Surprisingly, plenty of the important of people had been in the first group and left already. Still, ‘plenty’ was not ‘all’ and the idiot that had been bothering Mint for a while was still glaring at her expecting an answer.

“Wow… those guys must be from out of town,” said one onlooker who glanced backwards at the few people still around Mint. Kat slapped a hand against her face in response.

“Eleanora… do you do this often?” asked Kat.

“Oh yeah all the time,” agreed Eleanora. “People have started to sort their shit out really quickly when I turn up. It saves a surprising amount of time and effort… and the ones that ignore my warnings are usually either too stupid or a bit of fun. Sadly, these guys seem to be of the stupid variety,”

Apparently clicking a set of giant fingers and the screams of fleeing people wasn’t enough to distract the man from his tirade against Mint… but calling him an idiot at normal volume was? He whipped his head around and yelled. “Do you even know who I am? I am Aurelius Crystal, third son of Baron Crystal and I demand respect. I’ve already been ignored by this dryad, and now… what some demon and her maid are trying to kick me out of the park?”

The others nearby seemed to group around him to show their support… for some reason. *Must resist urge to backhand him into a wall.* Eleanora stepped forward and said, “Well considering I am one of the three guards in charge of the town at the moment… that gives me quite a bit of leeway to remove you,”

“You? A guard? Don’t make me laugh, you look like you couldn’t hurt a fly,” sniffed Aurelius. Kat felt like she was in another dimension. Well, she was, but clearly the wrong one. *What… the actual fuck? YOU LIVE IN FANTASY LAND! Why the FUCK would her appearance mean ANYTHING about how deadly she is?! That’s not even getting into the fact that I’m a demon but just… god how does he manage to remember breathing?*

Eleanora glanced at Kat as if asking for permission once again… and Kat just shrugged in response. She felt a bit bad before… but damn if they were really this stupid it was probably kinder to beat some sense into them. Eleanora agreed because she moved the giant hand down as Aurelias chuckled, “And what are you going to do with-” before being launched away with a giant finger flick.

Kat winced, not quite sure how lethal that was as Eleanora moved a finger to the next guy in line who quickly ran off, the others of the group following him soon afterwards. “Is he going to be alright?” asked Kat. “Well, not ‘alright alright’ but ‘not dead’?”

“Yes, he’s actually Rank 2 somehow and I didn’t hit him too hard. Got good distance, but nothing too bad. That’s not even taking into account the enchantments on his clothes. He won’t be happy sure… and he might be unconscious but certainly not dead,” answered Eleanora.

Kat strained her ears a bit to see if he was breathing but it was hard to pick out such an indistinct sound… she could however see him being dragged off by the others and they’d probably be more freaked out if he was dead… right?
