Illumina flew the flying ship, heading straight towards the Whispering Wildlands' central region.
Meanwhile, Davis sat inside a cabin and took out Yama.
He flung Yama around before looking at the curved black-white blade with appreciation for the fine craft. He glanced at the deeply curved blade on the other side of the rod, which had a similar composition but was smaller than the main blade. These two blades were molded at the tip of a white rod curled with a snake-like coil. The rod was an amalgamation of three different refined ores. It worked as the foundation for the armament to improve on its own.
"Yama, you still there?" Davis asked as he shook the scythe.
"Master, I need to play dead in order to comprehend my Phyletic Law like you."
"I see. Keep it up."
Davis nodded and placed the fine scythe in front of him.
Yama wasn't joking. It was indeed trying to comprehend Scythe Laws.
"Master, please give advice." However, Yama quickly sounded out.
"…" Davis blinked. He had only comprehended the Elementary Intent of the Phyletic Law of Scythe Laws. At his cultivation level, it was quite useless but still helpful when applied to techniques. It created a slight edge. Still, it wasn't worth being taught.
Nonetheless, he answered.
"To comprehend the Scythe Laws, one must delve into its primordial essence—to reap and sow. It is in understanding the cycle of endings and beginnings that its true mastery is attained. It is far more difficult to comprehend than most Phyletic Law because it requires a comprehension of life and death. Although many records I studied mentioned comprehending death is enough and from death, it is enough to beget life, I think it is good to have a comprehension of both and complete the cycle."
Davis pursed his lips, "Remember, it is good to remember what a scythe was originally used for. It was used to cut down the crops, ending life, and to reap the harvest, aiding life. That one action encompasses both life and death."
"Ah, okay!" Yama yelled out as though it understood.
"You are probably the only scythe that is capable of using both life and death energy, so it has become more difficult for you to comprehend your Phyletic Law, but it could also be said to be a boon. Keep at it." Davis encouraged Yama.
"Yes!"
Yama gave a voice of affirmation and went silent. However, Davis warned it.
"Right now, I'm going to improve your grade. If you are going to break through, let me know. An Empyrean Tribulation will be inbound."
"Ah, then I guess I will need to put my comprehension session on hold."
"Your wish."
Davis almost rolled his eyes. His Yama had always been moody, cowardly, and lazy, completely different than Lancelot, who was brave, honest, and obedient. However, Yama was also ruthless and frenzied when it came to killing people, so he guessed he only needed to deal with its cowardly trait.
'Now then…' Davis's eyes narrowed as he gazed at Yama's shining black-white blade. It was extremely sharp, appearing like it could cut through the densest metal as though it was tofu.
He had previously thought of two ways to upgrade Yama.
One was to allow it to eat soul essences, and the other was for it to reap the aura of death.
He hoped both worked, but usually, there was only one or very few methods that a weapon would use to increase its strength.
First, he took out one of the few Empyrean Grade soul essences that he kept to recharge his energy. He had refined the rest of them back when he was in seclusion. After all, his soul force's prowess was already at the base of the Level Four Empyrean Stage.
He had used the old method, layering the increase of soul force on top of one another to increase Soul Forging Cultivation's prowess. However, the prowess wasn't improving, possibly needing a frightening amount of energy. Davis had no choice but to abandon such methods.
Since he used most of the soul essences up for prowess, his cultivation had little fuel to burn and improve. He had reached the peak of the Level Four Immortal Emperor Stage but still couldn't find an impetus to break through, so he could only seek out more later.
The Autarchs whom the others hunted and brought back— their bodies didn't have soul essences. After all, a soul essence would only linger for a brief period of time. It wasn't even a minute.
They had all faded away, leaving him with nothing.
Of course, Vereina could store soul essences, but what she hunted belonged to her. He wasn't about to bully her again, or this time, she really would cry.
Nonetheless, he brought out a Level Two Autarch's soul essence. It belonged to another poor yet hateful Heaven's Warrior.
Davis couldn't care less about who it was. He directly smashed the soul essence on Yama's body and let the scythe do its job.
*Whizz~*
The scythe trembled, coming to life as it shook and hovered. However, the soul essence was simply rejected. Left alone, the soul essence started to fade faster.
"No, you don't."
Davis grabbed it with the palm of his hand and slapped his forehead, sending it back to his soul sea, where it became anchored around his soul essence again. It was then hidden by Fallen Heaven. Anyone who wanted to divine its location could forget about divining it.
Vereina's physique seemed to have a similar yet natural veil, but it was nowhere near as strong as Fallen Heaven's veil. It could even hide from the heavens when a tribulation showed up.
Nonetheless, he sighed, knowing that Yama wasn't accepting soul essences.
'I knew it… if it could absorb soul essences, I would've already known…'
Davis rubbed his face in disappointment.
Yama was capable of collecting soul essences, but it wasn't capable of absorbing them. It had brought him soul essences after killing its targets, after all.
Then he brought out an old corpse. It belonged to one of the Heaven's Warriors he killed in the Obsidian Crystal Turtle Minor Realm. It was a Level Five Autarch, the strongest below the three corpse puppets he had. He had kept it in case one of those three corpses was ruined.
The rest were all sent to the Treasury. After all, the magical beasts needed corpses to increase their cultivation faster.
He kept this Level Five Autarch's corpse to the side and began using death energy on it. The corpse began to rot visibly, but Davis slowed it down and only allowed pure death energy to remain. He didn't want it to rot and have the aura of decay. He wanted it to have the aura of death.
An hour later, Yama abruptly began floating.
"What's this… I smell something good…?"
It hovered vertically, and before Davis could say anything, it directly rushed to the side and swung the curved blade at the corpse, striking its flesh in the chest. Suddenly, the deathly aura around the corpse began fading, and the preserved corpse quickly began to rot.
"…"
Davis wanted it to stop, but he could see both the remnant vitality and the death aura of the corpse was leaving.
Yama was absorbing it all!
Davis was overjoyed. He had found a way to improve Yama's power.
However, the skies rumbled.
"Damn it! I told you to tell me if you were going to break through."
"Ah, I apologize, master!"
Davis acted fumingly but inwardly, he could only shake his head. It only took three seconds for Yama to break through to the Empyrean Grade, so it couldn't be blamed on Yama. Quickly, he made Illumina stop the boat, and they appeared outside.
And it just so happened that they were near a city.
