Chapter 344: Who is she?

“Hm? Sorry for what?”

“About your parents?”

“Why would you be sorry about it? That’s the best part, isn’t it?”

“Huh…?”

Kael blinked. For a moment, he thought that he had heard her wrong.

“What did you say?”

He questioned.

“I asked why you would be sorry about my parents. That’s the best part about the story. I no longer have to work for their sake. I can spend the provisions I earn on myself, and the rest can be used to exchange for more relaxation in working hours.

Is that not the best?”

“Do you not feel bad that they abandoned you…?”

Kael could not help but ask.

Honestly, even he did not know what he was doing here. He knew he shouldn’t be asking such questions.

It wasn’t his business, especially when she was happy and didn’t seem too bothered by it.

He literally had no reason to bring this up, and the previous him would have never done it either, but the current him…

The Father in him just couldn’t bring himself to stop.

But then—

“Why would I feel bad about it?”

Alrisa questioned back, and once again, Kael’s expression changed. Seeing that, Alrisa’s smile widened as she finally realized the problem.

“This is the Ashen Heights, Dragon Rider Kael.”

She began.

“People here do not live a lavish life. They all work hard to survive and do what is best for them. In such extreme situations, it is not uncommon for families to abandon daughters.

After all, raising a son is much more beneficial. A son could grow strong and have many options. A daughter, on the other hand, would be weak and have limited options.

The choice is obvious.”

“Huh? Won’t the daughter grow as much as the son if she Bonds with Magic Beasts?”

Kael couldn’t understand.

In this world, where one’s growth depended on their Beasts, how could there still be a difference between a male and a female?

Sure, there was still biological difference, but in this fantasy world, he didn’t see such gender discrimination before coming here.

“That requires too many resources. Most families would rather waste these resources on a son, who is stronger and guaranteed to repay them as they grow. Unlike daughters, who might turn out to be weak, wasting all the resources.”

Alrisa shrugged.

“Of course, this is actually good for me, because I was abandoned in the past, I am now free and can do whatever I wish, unlike a certain few…”

She spoke, silently glancing at Drenic, who was still hammering the metal rod without losing focus.

Kael glanced at him as well.

The man was drenched in sweat but was still hammering without stopping. Kael and Alrisa, who were resting for the past ten minutes, seemed to be living in a completely different world compared to him.

As he stared at him, Alrisa moved close to Kael and—

“Imagine working fifteen hours a day because your mother can no longer work, and this will continue for years till the mother dies for good.

My case would be even worse since both of mine are still alive. If they hadn’t abandoned me, I would need to work for their sake as well—meaning extra work, no work hours relaxation, for years before both of them die.”

The woman made a tiresome expression, as if the idea of taking care of her parents truly repulsed her.

“I would rather be free.”

She commented and Kael…

He just could not say anything.

At one point, he felt strange. How could one say such a thing about their parents? But then thinking about it and how her parents abandoned her just because she was born a woman…

Kael couldn’t blame her either.

She was living for herself and she was working hard.

Her scarred fingertips were proof of that.

“Alright, that is enough rest. Let’s start again.”

Suddenly, Alrisa spoke up as she stood with a big smile on her face. Even now, she didn’t seem to realize just how much her words had affected Kael.

Kael too just nodded as he stood up and grabbed the hammer again.

It was better not to think about things from his perspective. Alrisa certainly wasn’t wrong. She was a hardworking, playful girl. She obviously wouldn’t have any attachment to the family that abandoned her.

’Hmph, I would never abandon my children.’

Kael snorted inwardly. Thinking about his little children placed a smile on his face, and under Alrisa’s guidance, he continued working.

Just like that, the day passed by.

By the end, Kael had learned quite a few things. Of course, he still wasn’t an expert, but he got a hang of things.

“Haaahhh!! We are finally done!!”

Suddenly, Alrisa exclaimed out loud, instantly attracting everyone’s attention.

Of course, the woman didn’t care. She just glanced at Kael and—

“It has been so long since I have stayed in one place for more than ten hours.”

She complained as she stretched her body lazily.

“It was really hard for you, wasn’t it?”

Kael muttered, his mouth twitching. The only thing the woman did was guide him—he was the one doing most of the work.

“Yes! Very!”

Alrisa answered shamelessly.

Kael just sighed in defeat as he shook his head.

He couldn’t exactly say she didn’t do anything. Not only was she teaching him, she also took care of the entire quarter. Any questions anyone had, she answered them.

She checked, analysed, and rated their creations. She even told them what was wrong with the creation in just one look and how to correct it.

Kael could see that she was truly talented, a natural leader.

“Should we leave?”

Alrisa questioned.

“Just like that? Shouldn’t we meet the Forge Leader?”

“No? Why would we meet him?”

“Just because…?”

Kael didn’t know.

“He will kick us out if we bother him without a reason.

Never do that.”

Alrisa warned.

“Alright…”

Kael just nodded.

This place really was different.

Just like that, the two of them left the Forge and the instant he came out, Kael felt the cold winds brushing his body, sending shivers down his spine.

“It’s getting colder.”

Alrisa commented with a grim look on her face. Kael nodded as well. The two of them had already worn their coats and were currently walking towards their houses.

“Aren’t you going to leave?”

Kael questioned as he noticed that she was still following him.

“My job ends once you return to your house. Before that, I am supposed to answer any questions you might have as you move around the town.”

Alrisa answered lightly.

“So if I keep wandering around, your job wouldn’t end, huh?”

Kael spoke with a playful smile on his face.

“Aren’t you tired?”

Alrisa questioned. Clearly, she didn’t wish to stay here any longer.

“You must take care of your health, Kael. This was just the first day. If you do not have proper rest, things will get difficult in the future.”

She spoke, trying to get him to return.

Kael laughed at that.

“You can leave, don’t worry about me.”

He spoke lightly, but in an instant, the woman shook her head.

“I cannot leave before I drop you to your house.”

She may be lazy, but it didn’t mean she was irresponsible.

“Alright…”

Kael just sighed.

The two of them walked towards Kael’s house. On their way, Kael asked many questions about various things, and Alrisa answered them all.

Then, once he was finally near his house, he pointed at it and—

“We are here.”

He smiled.

“Then I wil—”

Alrisa smiled as well, but before she could say anything, the two of them heard a sharp, suspicious voice,

“Who is she?”
