The cloaked figures were leading the nobleman and his bodyguard forward.
“Are you sure you want to do this? The people we’re about to meet are very dangerous. It is not too late to call this off”, one of the cloaked men spoke as he turned to look at the nobleman. A subdued sound of metal clanking was heard under the cloaks.
“Hah! Do you think I will take that insult and eat it? I will show them, all of them, you can’t mess with my business… with me! …and expect to get away with it unscathed!”, the nobleman spoke with frustration.
“Very well. Through here”, the cloaked figure said as they turned into a small alley.
These parts of the Harbor District were already quite far from the Sky Port and closer to the more remote districts stretching deeper into the lake, mirroring the more affluent districts that stretched from the central district to the river.
There were a lot of pubs and brothels in the area, catering toward the crews of the coming Beasts of Burden and the dock workers, as drunken ramblings and wobbling passers-by were everywhere.
But the alley the cloaked figures led the nobleman to was quiet and secluded. Squeezed between densely-built buildings, the lights of the streets did not come into this narrow passage, leaving it in darkness.
And as they went deeper inside, they arrived at a certain door.
Exchanging some words with the person who answered the door, the group was let in.
“Corrupt Path”, Wu Long’s eyes slightly narrowed at the man who let the group in, “Heh, he certainly came to rely on professionals this time”
“Corrupt Path? Right in the middle of this city?”, Hong Yue widened her eyes at him.
“Yes, it is not that uncommon”, he nodded, taking out a communication talisman.
After he used the talisman, and a bit of time passed, he said “Come on, let’s go”, his figure disappearing into a cloud of dark smoke as did hers after him.
The two appeared in front of the door.
Three talismans left Wu Long’s hand that hovered over the door, the talismans silently floating onto the surface as profound, subtly glowing patterns started appearing in a circular shape between his hand and the door, the three talismans placed to coincide with the edges of the circle.
Meanwhile, Wu Long made the same knock pattern as the cloaked man before them.
But as soon as the person on the inside approached a certain distance, a cold blade passed through the door and his neck.
Something within the door changed, and more talismans slid under and from the sides of it, as Wu Long’s hand holding the Iron Leaf slowly and carefully withdrew.
The door opened and the figure of the door guard wrapped in glowing chains that came out of talismans that were placed all over him became visible to Hong Yue, but as expected of a Corrupt Path practitioner, whose vitality was abnormal, the man was still not dead.
Wu Long took out a dagger and pierced the heart, a dark red glow starting to seep from the man’s chest and wrap around the dagger, flowing into Wu Long’s hand.
‘I’m not sure who is the sinister one here’, Hong Yue thought as she looked at that.
There were no hesitations in Wu Long’s actions, as he calmly moved the corpse of the door guard aside, revealing a small room, with a staircase leading downwards.
“Is it going under the lake?”, Hong Yue asked looking at that.
Wu Long nodded as he closed the door behind them, “It certainly helps with being discreet, but works in our favor”
Talismans began pouring from Wu Long’s talisman-only Spatial Ring, filling the room entirely, all of it’s walls, floor and ceiling as he walked forward, profound glowing patterns appearing as he walked forward to the staircase and started going down, the talismans proceeding to completely cover the stairs as well.
Hong Yue followed him, now understanding that whoever built this place clearly did not expect they needed another exit to escape whoever was descending these stairs.
The stairs turned from time to time, as Hong Yue began to understand they were in a rectangular spiral going deeper and deeper.
The group ahead was still descending the stairs as well, and since Wu Long and Hong Yue moved slightly faster, they soon began hearing the voices.
“How much further?”, the nobleman’s voice now did not sound so confident anymore, as the depth increased.
“Still a ways to go… there is no way back now though”, the one wearing a cloak spoke.
“Tsk, I never said I wanted to back down, It’s just ridiculously far!”, the nobleman grumbled.
He did not receive a reply as they continued the descend.
“Finally!”, the nobleman’s voice resounded after a full half-hour of going down.
And soon Wu Long and Hong Yue could see warm light of lanterns illuminating the staircase ahead.
Wu Long stopped, which prompted her to stop as well.
His figure disappeared into a cloud of black smoke again, and Hong Yue could feel with carefully concealed Spiritual Sense of an assassin that Wu Long quickly dispatched four guards who stood in the room at the foot of the stairs, without any of them raising any noise whatsoever. Of course, even if they did, no sound would come out, but he did not even need to use the Sound Rune’s power, it was deployed seemingly just for added insurance.
Her eyes widened as she recognized his moves, they were the techniques of Bahshi Assassins, but far more refined, so smooth, precise, and highly efficient, not a single microscopic wasted movement or timing.
He was using both the Iron Leaf and a dark-blue hued dagger, similar to the one he gave to the twins, made of the legs of the spider that he hunted in the Blue Moon Secret Realm, and thus named Blue Moon Spider Daggers.
And the talismans that produced Spiritual Qi Chains, that seemingly went ahead of Wu Long in invisible state, instantly caught them.
To Hong Yue it looked like he just appeared near all four of the guards simultaneously as the clouds of black smoke certainly did.
And as she went down, he already took care of two guards in the corridor beyond this room.
They were now in what appeared to be natural caves, with stalagmites growing everywhere and the sounds of dripping water constantly reaching their ears, only slight signs of this place being inhabited like lamps placed at certain places giving away the fact this was a hideout.
The cold damp air had a smell of moss and a hint of chalkiness from the wet limestone. But mixed into that, there was a vague, very faint and distant, smell of blood, its metallic taste on the tongue unmistakable to Hong Yue.
They continued following the group, with Wu Long quietly disposing of everyone they met on the way that the group ahead passed, oblivious to the fact that other than two people pursuing them, there were now only corpses behind them.
As she watched his methodical movements, made with a cold and calculative precision, she could not help but compare it with his warm and gentle, caring attitude before. The stark contrast was just too obvious not to. His movements also vividly reminded her of the Bahshi Assassination Group as he used almost exclusively their techniques and even tactics, only deviating with the use of talismans and the Sound Rune, as well as consuming the blood essence of some of them with the Blood Rune.
And just like that, in her eyes, he turned from an unbeatable warrior always facing his opponents head-on into a master assassin, the likes of whom she had never seen.
Her mind further stirred with thoughts at that sight, adding to her introspection that started with their conversation.
Soon, the natural caves turned wider, and they saw a large grotto below, with a whole small complex of buildings.
There were between a 100 and 150 people there in total, most of whom were low-level lackeys.
Wu Long and Hong Yue stopped a bit further into the cave, not showing up at the edge where the grotto was observable, as Wu Long quietly sent out talismans that turned translucent and disappeared into thin air moments after leaving him.
