Chapter 220: Gor’Mekhai

The man turned his pain filled eyes towards Laila. His voice was cold.

“You’re all from Rhett’s squad.” He gazed at Grunde and then Renlo. He didn’t hide the disdain in his eyes.

Laila’s eyes went cold. She could see where this was heading.

“You couldn’t even do one thing right. Why did you let them escap— Urk!”

A pained expression crossed the man’s face and he shot a glare at Grunde, who had just tightened the cloth stopping his torn hand from bleeding.

“Don’t blame your incompetence on us, guardian. It’s never the blood knight’s duty to deal with the living,” Laila said, voice blunt. “We take care of darkness creatures, not help to make more.”

The man spat on the ground, expression placid. “Watch how you talk to an Adrenari, girl,” he said.

“The only reason your captain hasn’t ended up with a Clausebane is because of his blood. The same can’t be said for you.”

The entirety of Sylvastine was ruled by the council of clans consisting of different lower clans, which answered to the Sanguine clan.

However, there was no one who didn’t know who ruled the main city of Sylvastine, the Adrenari clan. And gazing at the spiky hair and eyes filled with energy, they could see that he was an Adrenari.

The man smiled at the brief pause his words caused. “Now, make yourself useful and carry me back to the entrance of this accursed forest.”

Laila’s eyes narrowed. This stupid man…

She was about to speak when Malakai walked out from behind Grunde, calm eyes fixed on the man.

The man turned toward the new face and almost immediately his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.

That face… there was no way he could mistake it. The entire city of Sylvastine had watched him standing alone against the army of darkness that day.

“N-Ninth V-Vein!” He clenched his fist, fighting through the pain before bowing deeply.

“I—I had no idea you were there.” He had felt a presence behind Grunde, but never imagined it would be the Ninth Vein!

“What is your name?”

“B-Bronoda Adrenari, Ninth Vein,” he replied after a second.

“Bronoda,” Malakai said. “Tell me about the figures we just faced.”

Bronoda’s face darkened. Malakai was clearly using his status to force him to talk. He bowed even lower.

“I apologize, Ninth Vein, but this is a matter of utmost importance to the city. I’m forbidden from speaking even a word about it.”

The silence that followed made Bronoda uneasy. It stretched on for a few seconds before Malakai finally broke it.

“Alright. Laila,” he said, turning toward her.

“Yes, Ninth Vein.”

“I want you to note down a few things for me. It’s for a message I want to send to the clan.”

“As you wish.” Laila didn’t know what he was planning, but she bowed regardless.

“First, Bronoda of the Adrenari clan insulted and called the Ninth Vein of the Sanguine clan incompetent.”

Bronoda’s eyes almost bulged out. “I—I never did such a thing!”

Malakai frowned. “Laila.”

“Yes, Ninth Vein.”

“He also called me a liar. Remind me to add that.”

By now, a small smile had appeared on Laila’s face. “Of course, Ninth Vein.”

Bronoda bit down on his lip, looking at Malakai with a panicked expression.

‘This devious boy!’ If Malakai sent such a message to the Sanguine clan, his life would be forfeit. He didn’t even want to imagine what they’d do to him.

“N-Ninth Vein, please, the city forbids me from—”

Before he could finish, Malakai suddenly stretched out his arm, dagger in the other hand.

Without hesitation, he slashed a clean cut across his forearm, crimson blood dripping onto the floor.

“N-Ninth Vein—w-what are you doing?” Renlo’s panicked gasp echoed, and even Laila and Grunde looked slightly taken aback. Before anyone could ask, Malakai spoke.

“Laila.”

“…Yes, Ninth Vein.” Her voice sounded startled.

“Also note this down,” he said. There was no hint of pain in his expression as he stared directly at the trembling man.

“Bronoda of the Adrenari clan attacked me after I demanded he apologize for insulting the Sanguine clan. I was able to escape with a cut on my hand.”

Bronoda’s heart skipped a beat. He didn’t know when the trembling started.

“As you wish, Ninth Vein,” Laila answered after a second.

“What do you think his punishment will be?” Malakai asked with a cold smile that made Bronoda tremble even harder.

“Possibly torture… and then death, Ninth Vein.”

“Just that?” Malakai raised an eyebrow. “Has the Sanguine clan gotten that soft?”

“Ah.” Laila gave a look of realization. “You’re right, Ninth Vein. The clan will probably go after his family and everyone he’s ever known or loved, just to send a message.”

Malakai nodded. “That’s more like the clan,” he said, taking on a thoughtful expression. “You know what? Let’s send the message now. I’ll be able to describe him perfectly this way.”

Bronoda’s trembling eyes were locked on Malakai as he suddenly tapped on his lifeguard.

‘Ahhh… he’s the devil,’ he thought in dread.

“Wait! Wait! Ninth Vein! I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”

“Hmm?” Malakai calmly turned towards him. “You’ll talk?” he asked.

“Y-yes. Y-yes.” Bronoda nodded quickly. “B-but—”

“Mention everything I just said, Laila. We’ll be sending the message now.” Malakai cut him off before he could finish, tapping his lifeguard.

“Yes, Ninth Vein,” Laila responded.

“No, no—wait! Don’t send it! Don’t send it! I’ll talk! I’ll talk!” Bronoda said quickly, shaking his head.

Malakai dropped his hand and turned fully to face him.

“W-what do you want to know, Ninth Vein?” He had a look of pure defeat in his eyes.

“Tell me about the two we just faced. Who or what are they?”

Bronoda clenched his trembling fists. He could already see his life ending if word got out that he was talking. But he had no choice.

“Gor’Mekhai,” he said after a second.

“Gor’Mekhai?” Malakai raised an eyebrow, and Bronoda nodded.

“It’s what they call themselves.”
