Chapter 238: Cake
Karla had arrived at the Nocturne as part of a group. If she tried to leave now, she was certain the guards would stop her.
Unoa frowned at her words. He didn’t like being threatened, but there was no way in hell he was getting punished by that monster of a fourteen year old.
“Tell me where you’re going first,” he said.
Karla hesitated for only a moment, then flashed him the key.
Unoa’s eyes narrowed at the clown key holder. He nodded and subtly gestured toward a group near the bar.
“They always leave around the same time whenever they come here. That’s in ten minutes. I suggest you join them.”
Karla gave a quick nod and moved to the group Unoa had indicated. It was made up of drunken men and women, laughing and swaying unsteadily.
She slid in without drawing attention, even joining their conversations and making them laugh.
Fifteen minutes later, she was out of The Nocturne.
Karla caught a carriage as soon as she was out. They were faster than walking and would attract less attention, especially considering what she was wearing.
She had wanted to pack a change of clothes for her trip to The Nocturne, but she had decided against it.
Her tight dress made it impossible to hide anything within, and carrying a bag was just begging to be searched.
But she wasn’t sure what to expect at the place she was headed to, and she didn’t want to risk being unprepared.
On her way, she made a pit stop to change clothes before moving in the direction of the location.
During the journey, Karla decided to ponder where she was going.
‘If I remember correctly, it’s on the west side.’
As she thought this, she couldn’t help but find the whole thing odd. Something was wrong somewhere.
The control over the Kaer Thorn District had been split into two. The western side was owned by the Sudrex, while the eastern side was controlled by the Tendrix.
And from the few days she had been here, she had found out the hard way, the Sudrex and Tendrix clans were far from allies. In fact, they were openly hostile to each other.
And from her memory, Karla could remember the location being on the western side.
Which begged the question: what was a Tendrix doing with a key to a place located in the Sudrex side of town?
The questions piled up inside Karla’s head, and she eventually had to shove them all down. She was going there anyway. She would get her answers.
The ride passed without events or interruptions, and eventually, Karla stopped the coachman when she saw he was a few buildings away from her target location.
Disembarking, Karla immediately merged into the crowd, looking as inconspicuous as possible.
She had worn a black, baggy T shirt and trousers, and packed her blonde hair into a tight cap. She couldn’t afford to stand out, not when utmost secrecy was needed.
Karla began approaching the building at a steady pace, moving with the small crowd. Luckily, this place was a commercial area. The streets were still bustling despite the late night. Her approach wouldn’t stand out.
She took in the street; the ground was bare earth but utterly neat and leveled.
The buildings lined both sides of the large road. They were made of brick, solid and neat, and the stores were still open, their designs clear, their bright lights seemingly eager to draw you in.
Karla ignored everything else and focused on her target.
It was located at the end of the street, fenced, with a large enough compound that set it apart from the rest of the buildings.
Karla instantly noticed the large clown figure sticking out from under a half covered cloth.
‘It’s uncompleted.’
A quick glance at the unpainted and clearly unfinished building confirmed it.
She moved past the gates, sending a glance into the compound through the see through fencing.
‘No guard,’ Karla thought.
She reached the end of the street and turned right, moving along the side of her target. She made sure no one was watching, and with an effortless leap, she scaled the fence, landing quietly on the other side.
Her gaze darted around.
‘Still no one,’ Karla thought.
She silently pulled a dagger from her clothes, crouched low, and moved forward with cautious eyes.
Moving stealthily around the compound, Karla was surprised to find not even a single soul.
‘There’s no one here,’ she concluded after a while.
‘I better see what they’re hiding and leave quickly.’
Karla moved toward the back of the building where she had noticed a locked door earlier. Making sure she wasn’t being followed, she inserted the key, and smiled when it opened with a soft click.
She peered it open as silently as possible and stepped into the room. The space was dimly lit, and the first thing Karla felt was the cold air.
‘Why is it so cold?’ She shivered, sending a glance around the room.
It was large, but there was little to nothing inside. Her gaze soon settled on a large figure sitting in the middle of the room.
‘What’s that?’ Karla wondered. The dim light barely illuminated the full thing. She brought out a flashlight and switched it on, pointing it at the figure, and froze in the next moment.
‘A statue?’
What she was staring at was the enormous figure of a bald headed man with blue eyes, dressed in regal attire. But Karla was sure this thing wasn’t alive. It had to be a statue.
‘No.’ Karla shook her head and approached the big thing, poking it.
‘It’s a cake,’ she realized, feeling the texture of the frosting.
But the revelation only confused her further. What the hell did a cake have to do with anything?
Before she could think further, her eyes sharpened as they landed on the large stomach of the statue.
It was bare and open. She glanced at the chunk of cake clearly taken out from the stomach at the side and turned back towards the hole.
