Chapter 270: Tricks

Malakai lay inside a caved trunk that had stopped his momentum, completely battered. His eyes were bloodshot, teeth gritted, and blood marred numerous parts of his body.

The figure glanced toward the large log pressing down on him. It must have broken off and fallen as he slammed into the trunk.

“It’s over.” The figure said, walking toward him with cold eyes. “No more fucking tricks.”

Though he said that, the figure’s steps were very cautious. With everything that had just happened, he’d have to be stupid not to be.

Malakai was dangerous.

He had made the mistake of underestimating him, but not again.

The fight could end now. A single blow to Malakai’s head and his skull would burst like a wrecking ball hitting a watermelon.

But the man maintained his cautious steps forward. ‘He could have more tricks.’

An animal at the brink of death should be feared more than anything. And right now, the figure considered Malakai a dangerous animal, one that deserved every ounce of caution he was giving.

Regardless, the main reason he wasn’t killing him instantly was simple, he wanted Malakai to suffer before he died.

‘There’s time.’

He refused to be tricked again.

The Blood Eclipse was trapped inside a vita veil and currently facing off against two Blooms. The Arbiter was stationed at the stronghold walls and would prevent anyone from the city from interfering.

He had time. And after what Malakai had just done, he had every intention of using it.

The synergy stage evolver scrutinized the area around Malakai. There was no vial of Vitaeon in sight.

His arm and the left side of his torso were shattered. He struggled to lift the massive branch with his other hand, but to no avail.

The man noticed the weapon was still with him, but he ignored it. He was faster than the boy. Now that he knew it was a grade three weapon, he wouldn’t be caught off guard again.

He confirmed his assumption with his eyes, no more tricks. The figure let his guard down slightly and approached.

But he had barely taken a few steps when he paused, gaze narrowing on Malakai.

Through all the pain, the boy had suddenly grinned.

Something about that grin sent a chill through him. It wasn’t madness. It wasn’t defiance. It was… wrong. As if the devil himself had smiled at him.

The figure’s head spun slightly, already bracing for what might come, when he saw Malakai remove his arm from under the massive log.

And that was what confused him.

Malakai’s arm was the only thing holding the log from fully crushing him. But he’d let go? Why?

He got his answer the moment the log came hurling toward him with shocking speed.

The figure’s eyes blew wide.

‘A distraction.’

That was the thought that rang in his mind as his hand flew, busting through the log. He ignored the two large broken chunks that whizzed past him and narrowed his eyes.

Malakai had thrown two objects his way. The first, a vita mine. And the second, a dagger.

The dagger struck the mine mid air before it reached him, triggering an explosion that thickened the haze around him.

But the figure’s aura detonated from his form, unleashing a powerful burst that cleared the haze instantly.

His crimson eyes glowed, and he was just about to move when he caught sight of another object hurtling toward him.

‘The weapon!’

His gaze sharpened.

This was Malakai’s last trick. That weapon was the only thing capable of hurting him. Nothing else the boy had could deal real damage. Once he neutralized this, it would be over.

The weapon spun fast, the humming blade slicing through the air, but compared to a synergy stage evolved, it was still slow.

His hand flew out, slamming against the staff, deflecting it hard to the side.

The figure’s eyes returned to Malakai, a smile forming beneath his mask.

“Oh, I’m going to enjoy this,” he said, about to step forward, only to freeze as he locked eyes with the boy.

‘What…’

Malakai was still on the ground. Still battered. The grin from earlier had vanished, replaced with a cold, unnervingly calm expression.

Despite the impending death hanging over him, there wasn’t a single trace of fear in his gaze. And somehow… it made the figure’s heart race.

He clenched his fist, pushing the feeling deep inside. His eyes turned cold once again as he took a step forward, only for the earth beneath him to vanish.

‘Another trap!’

His thoughts were in disarray as he dropped. He glanced down, just bare earth.

‘The trap must be something else.’

He glanced back up, and then, the impossible happened.

Malakai had thrown himself down after him.

The figure could feel it the Vita surging through the boy’s body. His broken arm and shattered torso healed in an instant. The man’s eyes instantly caught the object clutched in Malakai’s hand.

A vita mine.

His intention was obvious.

‘He wants to harm me with it.’

The figure almost chuckled. His arm whipped forward and grabbed Malakai’s wrist, then squeezed.

A sharp crunch echoed as bones broke. Malakai’s teeth clenched as he fought through the pain. The mine slipped from his grasp, falling toward the bottom of the trench.

The man yanked Malakai upward, holding him by the arm and staring directly into his eyes.

They were now both inside a narrow trench, just big enough for two.

“It’s over.”

He squeezed Malakai’s arm tighter, as though trying to rip it clean off.

But he couldn’t hide his shock when Malakai didn’t even flinch.

No scream. No cry.

Instead, through gritted teeth and cold eyes, Malakai spoke…

“Yes… it’s over.”

The figure’s gaze exploded wide. The world seemed to slow.

He felt it.

Something was wrong.

He snapped his gaze up, nothing.

He glanced around, only dirt.

Then finally, he looked down. That was when he saw it.

Malakai’s other arm, the one that had been hanging limp this entire time. Only now, it wasn’t limp, and it wasn’t empty.

A black staff slipped down into his grasp from inside his jacket.

The figure recognized it immediately.

‘Another weapon!’ Another grade three vita weapon.

The hum echoed, and Malakai didn’t even need to move.

The compressed curved blade burst out from the edge, and in one clean motion, it sliced through both of the figure’s thighs.
