June 16th, 11 a.m.
The rain in New York was getting heavier.
In the villa district downtown, large pools of water quickly gathered on the ground, flowing into the sewers.
In the yard.
Hannibal’s charred body was wetted by the rain, yet it still smoked.
He was as dead as one could be.
...But within the corpse, a peculiar aura was slowly brewing.
Eerie and cold.
The Church always feared hunters because they inevitably became Evil Spirits upon death.
No power is harmless. The strength gained in exchange for being eroded by Evil Spirits carried malice towards the living from the very start.
Du Wei walked up to Hannibal’s corpse and casually picked up the letter.
Under Spirit Vision.
The letter felt very strange to him, as if harboring a supremely evil will,
yet it seemed to be restrained by something.
It appeared unable to come out from within.
Immediately afterward, a line of text emerged on the letter—[A few minutes ago, Du Wei killed Hannibal and became the new master of the letter]
Then, feeling something amiss, the text vanished and reappeared, only this time the reference to Du Wei changed from his name to you.
Just as the text stated, Du Wei was now the master of this letter.
It didn’t care about Hannibal’s death at all.
Or rather, whoever used it became its master.
“It seems I’ve gotten myself something incredible, this letter appears to possess the power to recount past events in writing,”
Looking at the letter, Du Wei’s eyes showed a trace of peculiarity.
Certainly.
As Du Wei thought, the letter could indeed display events that had happened, but only up to a maximum of ten minutes ago; it was like a programmed item, different from the mask and Joker Card.
The Dusk Bell Church had rendered it harmless, but also greatly weakened its power.
After some thought, Du Wei put away the letter and his gaze shifted downward.
He looked at Hannibal’s body and calmly said, “Game over.”
“Now, you will become a new Evil Spirit.”
“But what puzzles me is why your performance this time was far worse than I expected—is there a reason for that?”
“The you I saw on the surveillance was no different from an idiot.”
“Your arrogance and hubris seemed greatly amplified.”
“To the point where I wondered if you could still resurrect, yet this scene tells me that you are indeed dead.”
“And died in such a ridiculous manner.”
It was hard to tell if it was mockery or confusion, but Du Wei truly felt something very strange.
He wanted Hannibal dead, but his easy death caused him confusion.
To sum it up.
It was too easy a death.
However, the cold aura emanating from the corpse cut off Du Wei’s train of thought.
The Evil Spirit was resurrected.
The new Evil Spirit wouldn’t be too strong, but its potential powers should be terrifying.
After all, Hannibal had the ability to consume Evil Spirits.
The new Evil Spirit might also possess this power.
However…
The next second, a voice that was all too familiar to Du Wei rang out.
“The reason Hannibal died was because he harbored thoughts he should not have.”
“What he can do, others can do as well.”
“That’s why I wanted him dead, and so he died.”
The imagined Evil Spirit did not appear.
After the increasingly intense cold aura, what took its place was the Evil Spirit Du Wei, dressed in a black suit, his gaze icy and serene.
But its figure was very ethereal.
It was somewhat like a counterfeit created by Pennywise.
This was a projection.
The Evil Spirit that was supposed to appear seemed to have become the nutrient sustaining it.
“Long time no see, the Evil Spirit version of me.”
Du Wei’s gaze also turned icy, as he promptly pulled out the flintlock gun and pulled the trigger.
With a bang,
the bullet fired but stopped in midair before hitting the target.
The Evil Spirit Du Wei reached out, grasped the bullet, and after opening his hand to reveal it in his palm, said calmly, “You see, this is useless against me.”
“Besides, I know you are testing me, but this is pointless for both of us.”
“Because I am you.”
Upon hearing this,
Du Wei put away the flintlock gun and said coldly, “The so-called significance is based on the outcome, at the very least I can now be certain that you haven’t come out from the mirror, the you here is nothing more than a certain projection.”
The Evil Spirit Du Wei praised, “Correct answer, so do you know where I am now?”
Du Wei frowned and said, “With the Veda Sect?”
The Evil Spirit Du Wei nodded and said, “That’s right, Hannibal disrupted my plans, and he made the people of the Veda Sect believe in my existence, and with another mirror, he made me leave the Mirror World.”
“It’s a pity that he wanted to consume me.”
However, Du Wei said indifferently, “That sounds quite ridiculous.”
The Evil Spirit Du Wei replied, “I think so too, so his role was merely to help me escape a dead-end situation prematurely.”
At this point, The Evil Spirit Du Wei suddenly laughed, speaking as if conversing with an old friend, in an inexplicable tone, “I knew you would kill him, so I’ve been influencing him all along, and finally used this method to meet you.”
“Although it’s not the real me, it’s acceptable.”
“What I want to tell you is that you no longer have any chance. I will influence Akaret, the leader of the Veda Sect, to act as a so-called god for a while.”
“The entire Veda Sect will have only one will, which is mine.”
“So, answer me, do you think you still stand a chance?”
“The church is not as strong as you think, it has been weakening for too long.”
“I am giving you a chance to resist, because you will be left with nothing.”
The voice of the Evil Spirit Du Wei was very elegant, calm and unhurried.
As it had said, the current situation had become one-sided.
Even without the external force of the Veda Sect, it had no effect on the Evil Spirit Du Wei.
The medium of the Mirror Evil Spirit had vanished.
During the time the Evil Spirit Du Wei was confined in the Mirror World, it was not inactive.
Its abilities were much stronger than Du Wei’s by a wide margin.
Had it not been for the information discrepancy, and the fact that the Evil Spirit Du Wei was at that time assimilating the Joker Card representing the gamble, Du Wei would have had no chance of success at all.
More frightening was,
the horror of the Evil Spirit Du Wei lay in its intelligence and way of thinking.
To it, power was merely a means.
And that precisely was what Du Wei lacked.
He looked at the Evil Spirit version of himself, took a deep breath, and slowly said, “So, your appearance this time, is it just to tell me your current odds of success, or are you simply showing off?”
The Evil Spirit Du Wei stated faintly, “There’s no need to test whether I have become some other being, I am you, and what you wouldn’t do, I wouldn’t do either.”
“The reason I chose to meet you this way is to tell you that your only chance is to kill me before the Veda Sect makes its move.”
“Of course, the price for doing so is facing me prematurely.”
“This is like a dead end, but I have not given you the option to choose.”
