First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 1876: A Toast to a Thousand Years

He only became an Immortal King a few months now, but he’d already proven his Dao and entered the Great Realm?

Who’d dare believe such a thing?

Who’d… dare even imagine such a thing?

Chu Shentong certainly did not, so he was completely dumbstruck.

Suddenly, Su Yi said out of nowhere, “Tell me, if I threatened Divine Son Jin Zhuliu’s life, could I find your hiding spot?”

Chu Shentong’s pupils constricted. He laughed coldly and was just about to say something when…

Bang!

Su Yi tightened his fist and shattered his avatar of will.

“I'd have killed you both eventually, no matter what you said,” said Su Yi, sweeping his gaze across the hollowed-out Jade Firmament Immortal Island. “Also, there’s no longer any need for this place to exist…”

He turned and left, then rode off on his little flat boat.

The enormous Jade Firmament Immortal Island, so massive that it was like a continent in its own right, split into chunks behind him, then sank into the ocean’s depths.

Su Yi sprawled out languidly at the tail end of the boat, his eyes narrowed in contentment and a jug of wine placed beside him. He looked perfectly relaxed.

Inwardly, he was pondering his conversation with Chu Shentong.

He’d gained only three useful clues.

First, much of what Qi Nie planned to do during the ceremony to commemorate the re-founding of the Central Immortal Court was targeting him. This included capturing those connected to him as sacrificial offerings and signing an agreement with an emissary of the Beyond to cede sixteen of the Immortal Realm’s provinces to the demons.

Everything was to force Su Yi to make an appearance!

Second, Chu Shentong and Wang Ye’s other old enemies knew the inside story and the plan surrounding the re-founding of the Central Immortal Court, but they most likely wouldn’t participate personally. Rather, they planned to “watch a fire burn from the safety of the other side of the river.”

They were enduring in silence because they were waiting for the Path of Divinity to appear in just three to five years’ time!

Achieving divinity came first and foremost. They wouldn’t recklessly show themselves for anything else.

That meant that cleaning up his old enemies would be extremely troublesome. If they remained hidden, finding them would be like trying to fish a needle out of the ocean.

Third, as of yet, no one knew what had happened in the Magnetic Origin Ice Sea or after he entered Spiritual Desolation Mountain. In other words, no one knew that he’d killed Divine Son Gu Yunchan and Divine Daughter Qing Wu. No one knew that he’d entered the Great Realm or slaughtered those divine emissaries, either.

It was obvious from Chu Shentong’s behavior that he’d never even considered the possibility that Su Yi, someone who’d just entered the Miracle Realm a few months ago, could kill divine children. In reality, he could do it even as an Immortal King. Moreover, Chu Shentong certainly hadn’t considered the possibility that Su Yi had already proven his Dao and entered the Great Realm.

This third clue was of the utmost importance. If Chu Shentong was in the dark, weren’t the others, too?

At the end of the day, their understanding of him was limited to what they’d learned from the expedition into the Dragon Palace!

Of these three clues, the first is the most important. Chu Shentong is right; neither my past life nor this one will tolerate anyone re-establishing the Central Immortal Court without my permission!

As Su Yi pondered, he raised his jug of wine and had a sip.

He was certain that Sect Leader Qi Nie had made ample preparations; he wouldn’t have announced his intentions to the world if he weren’t confident, nor would he have targeted Su Yi!

Blood Firmament, Jiang Tai’e, Chu Shentong, Nan Pingtian, and the other old-timers might not be participating, but they’d surely been involved in the planning.

After all, these old-timers understood Wang Ye better than anyone.

What kind of methods did they prepare? Why are they so certain they can beat me?

I’m sure they’re doing their utmost to gather all information regarding me. Furthermore, they understand what happened in the ruins of the Dragon Palace in full detail, and they took that into account to meticulously plan a death trap for me. But at the time, I was just an Immortal King…

A grin rose unbidden to Su Yi’s lips. It’s a pity, but for all their planning, they could never have anticipated that I’d break into the Great Realm in just a few short months!

Furthermore, Su Yi guessed that divine children would participate in the ceremony commemorating the re-establishment of the Central Immortal Court. After all, most of those from the God Domain were dead set on killing him. How could they possibly remain uninvolved in something like this? Even if the divine children didn’t participate themselves, it was likely that they’d send their emissaries. It was also entirely possible that other Great Profound experts would lie in ambush.

Even the forces of the Beyond might get involved. After all, Qi Nie planned to sign an agreement with an emissary of the Beyond. That proved that the Church of the Pure One had long since started colluding with the demons!

The demons of the Beyond were Wang Ye’s greatest enemies. How could they pass up a golden opportunity to kill Wang Ye’s reincarnation?

The immortal factions with grudges against me, the demons of the Beyond, plus the divine children and their followers… Hah! They’re hosting a grand ceremony like this and involving so many factions just to take little old me down. I’m truly flattered… Su Yi chuckled, his eyes glinting with cold light. I’ll just have to seize this opportunity to kill to my heart’s content!

He couldn’t be bothered to give the matter any further thought. He just raised his jug of wine and drained it in a single gulp.

……

The east of the Immortal Realm. Evening Fog City.

This city bordering the Eastern Sea was home to one of the Immortal Realm’s three great black markets, the Precious Gem Workshop.

A few months ago, Su Yi left Evening Fog City and ventured into the Eastern Sea.

At the time, he’d yet to become an Immortal King. Now, mere months later, he returned as a Great Realm expert! Barely any time had passed, but his transformation was too great for words.

Su Yi sat at a table laden with wine and four types of refreshments in a restaurant called the Cascading Cloud.

His cup was full, and the wine sparkled like amber. Wisps of mist seemingly flecked in gold rose into the air, and a pleasing, sweet smell wafted into Su Yi’s nostrils.

Su Yi drained his cup and felt as if he’d swallowed a mouthful of fire. Overlapping waves of heat coursed through him starting from his stomach, and a mellow, floral flavor lingered in his mouth.

His eyebrows rose. This immortal brew was extraordinarily distinctive.

He called over one of the employees. “Waiter, what do you call this wine?”

“This must be your first time visiting. Otherwise, how could you not know that this is our restaurant’s trademark brew, a Thousand Years of Cascading Clouds?” explained the waiter.

Su Yi was stunned, his gaze a bit strange. He murmured, “‘A toast to a thousand years of life, let us drink a river of cascading clouds.’ The wine is extraordinary, and its name is extraordinary, too.”

The waiter exclaimed, “You’re quite knowledgeable, sir. Indeed, the name comes from that very line of poetry.”

Su Yi asked with great interest, “Then do you know where that poem originated?”

The waiter said, “It seems… that prior to the Age of Fallen Immortals, His Excellency the Eternal Night Immortal Sovereign wrote it at one of the Central Immortal Court’s Immortal Peach Banquets. It then spread throughout the entire Immortal Realm. But that’s just a rumor, and no one knows whether it’s true or not.”

Su Yi nodded. “Fill this wine gourd to the brim with a Thousand Years of Cascading Clouds.”

He passed the waiter a green-skinned gourd. “This can hold ninety thousand catties. Be careful.”

“Ninety thousand catties!?” exclaimed the waiter. “That’ll cost almost one hundred thousand top-grade immortal jades!”

“Go on. Rest assured, I won’t forget to tip you.”

“Alright! One moment, please!” The waiter dashed off with the gourd.

Meanwhile, Su Yi poured himself another cup and murmured, “A toast to a thousand years of life, let us drink a river of cascading clouds. You practice the sword and wait, raising immortal waves in the river of stars to wash away the demons beyond the Gate of Heaven, and you stabilize the world with a single hand!”

Wang Ye had written this after getting drunk at the Immortal Peach Banquet. He’d poured his heart onto the page. He wrote of fighting beyond the Immortal Realm’s Nine Gates of Heaven, routing the demons of the Beyond, and thoroughly quelling the flames of war.

Alas, in the end, he never realized this ambition.

Now, Su Yi drank a Thousand Years of Cascading Clouds and thought about how Qi Nie planned to sign a treaty with the demons of the Beyond once he’d re-established the Central Immortal Court. It would cede the sixteen provinces lining the border.

Su Yi’s heart welled with irrepressible killing intent. He’d just have to wait for the day he could test his sword beyond the Nine Gates of Heaven and sweep through the demons there!

“Dear customer, here’s the information you requested.”

Suddenly, a man in gray dashed in and proffered a jade slip. Su Yi accepted it, then handed the man a bag of holding.

When the man in gray saw the ten thousand immortal jades inside, his eyes lit up with delight. He hurriedly clasped his fist in gratitude, then turned and dashed off.

Su Yi sat there and examined the slip’s contents between sips of wine.

After arriving in Evening Fog City, he had sought out one of the city’s “local serpents,” a faction that specialized in peddling information. He had paid a generous deposit and had them gather information about every major disturbance in the Immortal Realm that had taken place in the past three months. The information he’d requested was all gathered in this jade slip.

Shortly afterward, Su Yi put the slip away and sank into thought.

Just a few months had passed, but a lot had happened in the Immortal Realm. However, most of it was within his expectations. For example, numerous other divine children had descended into the Immortal Realm. Word of their arrival had spread, and by now, the entire Immortal Realm knew about them. Furthermore, word that he was Wang Ye’s reincarnation had recently taken the Immortal Realm by storm, stirring up enormous waves of uproar.

But it was the re-establishment of the Central Immortal Court that drew the most attention.

More than a month remained until the grand opening ceremony, but practically everyone in the Immortal Realm was paying attention. This would shift the balance of power completely.

There were a few other scattered developments too. This information gave Su Yi a rough sense of everything that had happened over the past few months.

“Hm?” Suddenly, Su Yi glanced through the window and caught a glimpse of a familiar figure on the bustling city streets.

However, it was fleeting; that familiar figure hurried past, and in the blink of an eye, they’d disappeared into the crowd.

Seth's Thoughts

The poetry in this section is, as far as I can tell, half classical, half made up.

This part, "一觞饮千岁,江海吸流霞" or "A toast to a thousand years of life, let us drink a river of cascading clouds" comes from a Xin Qiji (a Southern Song Dynasty Poet.) It was written to celebrate Zhao Jie'an's birthday, hence the wish for longevity.

Then there's this part of the poem: "You practice the sword and wait, raising immortal waves in the river of stars to wash away the demons beyond the Gate of Heaven, and you stabilize the world with a single hand!”

This bit's a Wang Ye original. ;)

Is it just me, or is there something hilarious about immortal cultivators wishing someone 1000 years of longevity? I know, I know, it's just a saying, but... it reminds me of that game show pitch: "'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' but the contestants are billionaires so it's more of a threat."
