First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 1878: A Clan’s Predicament

His lapels were damp with tea, but the old man in plain cloth robes couldn’t be bothered with that.

He shot to his feet, turned, and left the teahouse, issuing orders at top speed. “Tell His Lordship that the Tyrant Wang Ye has returned from the Eastern Sea. Hurry!”

Whoosh!

The Skyshadow Profound Sparrow beat its knifelike wings and shot through the air, but before it got far, a hand condensed out of soul power closed around it. The Skyshadow Profound Sparrow cried out in alarm and struggled to break free, but in the blink of an eye, it was crushed.

The old man in plain robes was horrified. He raised and was about to shatter a talisman when…

Bang!

A finger struck him on the back of the head. He staggered and fell to the ground face first, like a dog eating shit. Everything went black, and he fell unconscious. Then someone lifted him off the ground, and in a flash, both he and his assailant had vanished.

……

There’s another old-timer hiding nearby? Both Tang Bao’er and Tang Yuyan were stunned, but before they could process that…

Bang!

The old man in plain cloth robes fell from the sky and landed in front of Su Yi like a dead dog.

“Grand Elder!” When the middle-aged man in yellow saw this, his eyes practically popped out of their sockets. Just like that, he captured the grand elder alive?

His heart instantly sank into the pit of his stomach. Now, when he looked at Su Yi, his eyes were full of despair.

“I see that you’ve recognized me.” Su Yi tossed the yellow-robed middle-aged man to the ground. “Cooperate, and I’ll let you die quickly. Refuse, and you’ll live a life worse than death. It's your decision. But remember: there’s no room for negotiations here. One word out of turn, and I’ll consider you ‘uncooperative.’”

Su Yi’s tone was light and airy, but his threats were terrifying. Even Tang Bao’er and Tang Yuyan felt shaken, and their gazes grew a bit strange. This was their first time seeing Su Yi threaten someone like this.

A choice between a quick death and a life worse than death! No matter what, the middle-aged man wasn’t getting out of this alive. But everyone here knew that “life worse than death” was unquestionably the more terrifying option.

The middle-aged man in yellow shuddered, his expression bleak. He was a lofty Immortal King. When had anyone ever treated him like this? But at the same time, he knew that there was no room for him to struggle. After all, he was up against Wang Ye, the man who’d once dominated the entire Immortal Realm, the Tyrant who struck fear into the hearts of even other peak Great Realm cultivators!

In the end, the middle-aged man slumped. His hopes extinguished, and he agreed to cooperate. All he wanted was a quick death!

When Su Yi saw this, he turned to Tang Yuyan. “You ask him.”

Tang Yuyan froze briefly, then hurriedly nodded. It really did make sense for her to interrogate the man; this disaster was targeting her and Tang Bao’er, and besides, she had a bellyful of questions.

Tang Yuyan began the interrogation, and the yellow-robed middle-aged man obediently answered them all.

Su Yi stood to the side and listened in. Before long, he understood what had happened.

A month prior, the ancient Tang Family was struck by crisis, and behind this crisis was the Church of the Pure One!

The Church of the Pure One was extending invitations to experts of immortal factions from all across the Immortal Realm in preparation for the re-establishment of the Central Immortal Court. As one of the leading factions of the Middle Province, the Tang Family received an invitation, too.

However, they refused it, and this provoked the Church of the Pure One’s ire. They interpreted the Tang Family’s refusal as a rejection of the re-establishment of the Central Immortal Court, as well as disrespect toward them, the Church of Supreme Oneness, the Church of Divine Flame, and the other factions involved.

Thus, the Church of the Pure One issued an ultimatum. The Tang Family had to publicly express their support for the re-founding of the Central Immortal Court and send representatives to attend the ceremony. If they refused, they’d become the common enemy of the Church of the Pure One and their allies.

Even in the face of this threat, the ancient Tang Family staunchly refused. They reaffirmed that they wouldn’t be involved.

This thoroughly enraged the Church of the Pure One, and the Tang Family had faced all manner of attacks ever since.

First, the smaller factions beneath their banner betrayed them, drawing lines between themselves and the Tang Family one after another. Immediately afterward, the Tang Family’s forces and businesses throughout the Immortal Realm were suppressed, invaded, and annexed.

They were isolated even in the Middle Province. No other faction dared stay in contact with them!

In the end, even fellow Tang clansmen started causing trouble. The Tang Family was now beset by trouble on all sides, and everyone was worried.

But there was nothing the ancient Tang Family could do. After all, the Church of the Pure One, Church of Supreme Oneness, Church of Divine Flame, Qianyuan Sword House, and other top immortal factions were behind it all!

Who beneath the heavens would dare to provoke them?

Fortunately, the Tang Family was a massive, powerful faction in its own right. Otherwise, they would have fallen a long time ago.

The group tailing Tang Yuyan and Tang Bao’er were from an Immortal King faction known as the Tianluo Daoist Sect. They worked under the Church of the Pure One.

Why were they tailing Tang Yuyan and Tang Bao’er? It turned out that the two women had come to Evening Fog City on Grand Elder Tang Lingqi’s orders. They were here to look for information regarding Su Yi.

Their purpose was simple. The Tang Family was now alone, with neither allies nor reinforcements, and it was clear to Tang Lingqi that only Su Yi could help them now!

By now, the whole Immortal Realm knew that Su Yi was the reincarnation of the Eternal Night Immortal Sovereign. They also knew that Su Yi had ventured into the Eastern Sea several months ago, and that he’d killed so many people in the ruins of the Dragon Palace that the pooled blood flowed like a river. Even divine children had suffered badly at his hands!

Thus, Tang Yuyan and Tang Bao’er had come to Evening Fog City, and the Tianluo Daoist Sect naturally knew what they were after. They hadn’t attacked yet simply because they wanted to use the two women as bait; they hoped to figure out where Su Yi was.

That was how it all went down. Only after hearing the full story did Su Yi understand that he’d been involved the whole time!

How bad must the ancient Tang Family’s situation be for Tang Lingqi to have sent Tang Bao’er and Tang Yuyan to find me?

Su Yi didn’t know, but there was no way he’d remained uninvolved.

The ancient Tang family had helped him considerably during the Divine Hunt, and besides, he’d promised Tang Lingqi that if the Tang Family ran into problems it couldn’t resolve on its own, they could come to him for help. He naturally wouldn’t go back on his word.

“Your Excellency, what shall we do with them?” said Tang Yuyan with the utmost respect.

Last time, she had no idea who Su Yi was, resulting in no small number of absurd misunderstandings. The mere thought of it left her agitated and frantic.

Su Yi waved his sleeve. Both the middle-aged man in yellow and the unconscious old man in plain robes were instantly reduced to piles of ash.

Tang Bao’er’s little face filled with astonishment. Two Immortal Kings disappeared before my very eyes, just like that!

Tang Bao’er was still just a Void Realm True Immortal, so witnessing this came as an unprecedented shock.

Only now did she realize how terrifying this “handsome big brother” really was.

Su Yi immediately reached a decision. “Come on, let’s take a trip back to the Tang Family.”

Tang Yuyan was instantly excited. How could she fail to realize the implications?

The ancient Tang Family… had been saved!

……

Seven days later.

Golden Billows Immortal Mountain.

The home of the ancient Tang Family.

“Elder Yuyan, Young Mistress Bao’er, you came back.”

When the Tang Family experts guarding the mountain gates saw them, they were briefly stunned, but they quickly rushed up to greet them.

“Mm,” said Tang Yuyan. A moment later, she sensed that something was amiss. “You seem a bit… surprised?”

The leader of the group, a man in brocade robes, hurriedly explained, “It’s just that you’ve been gone for a month, and you arrived so suddenly. We just found it a bit strange is all.”

He then turned to one of his companions, a man in white robes. “Hurry up and inform the high elder that Elder Yuyan and Young Mistress Bao’er have returned!”

“Got it!” The man in white nodded and turned to leave.

But then, Tang Yuyan’s beautiful face frosted over, and she said, “Stop right there! Why disturb the high elder over our return? I won’t let anyone leave until I’ve gotten a clear answer!”

The Tang Family experts’ expressions shifted.

When Su Yi saw this, he nodded approvingly. Tang Yuyan’s perceptive indeed. She immediately noticed that something strange is afoot.

The leader, the man in brocade robes, lowered his voice and said, “Elder Yuyan, something happened a few days ago, and… you’d best leave immediately. The further the better. Whatever you do, don’t ever come back!”

Tang Yuyan’s heart sank. “If you have something to say, say it clearly. What on earth happened?”

“Err…” The man in brocade robes looked troubled. The others lowered their heads, not daring to meet Tang Yuyan’s eyes.

Tang Yuyan was increasingly certain that something was wrong. Her delicate brow furrowed. We’ve only been gone a month. Don’t tell me the clan’s changed?

“No need to make this difficult for them,” Su Yi said suddenly. “Let’s just go see for ourselves.”

With that, he led the way ahead.

“Stop right there! Who are you…?”

The Tang Family experts tried to stop him, only for invisible, imposing force to emanate from Su Yi’s body, forcing them to the ground and knocking them unconscious.

Su Yi didn’t so much as glance at them before continuing on his way.

Tang Yuyan and Tang Bao’er were stunned, but they hurried after him.

“Your Excellency, it seems to this junior that we’d best ask around and understand the situation first. Causing a disturbance could alert our enemies,” whispered Tang Yuyan.

Su Yi waved dismissively. “No need to go to all that trouble. Let’s just walk right in. If anything happened, I’ll just fix it.”

“.....” Tang Yuyan fell silent.

Suddenly, Tang Bao’er said with concern, “Earlier, they wanted to send word to the eigh elder, but not my father. I’m worried that… something might have happened to him!”

She was visibly fraught with worry. Her father was the head of the Tang Family! If anything had happened, her father was almost certainly the first to suffer!

Tang Yuyan’s heart clenched too. She murmured, “That’s not all. They urged us to run immediately, never to return. That means that some of our clansmen are likely to target us!”

Both women’s hearts were instantly incomparably heavy.

Su Yi thought for a moment, then said gently, “It seems to me that this is an internal conflict, in which case, it’s actually rather easily resolved. Don’t forget that I’m here.”

He spoke calmly and casually, but with convincing force. Both women instantly relaxed. They’d found their pillar of support. Even if the sky fell and the earth collapsed, he’d shield them from the wind and rain.
