Qing Feng hung his head in self-reproach, not daring to argue back.
Qing Yang focused on driving the car, but his heart was filled with immense self-reproach.
They already regretted deeply, just like Mo Xiuchen had said, if they had stayed by Wen Ran’s side all the time, perhaps this wouldn’t have happened.
“Are those two women still in the hospital?”
Mo Xiuchen pursed his lips and asked coldly.
He even skipped formalities, and the thought of his Ranran going into premature birth because of Bai Xiaoxiao and Luo Haofeng’s mother, and the near danger she faced, filled his heart with uncontrollable anger.
“Mrs. Bai is still there, Mrs. Luo has gone back to the hotel.”
Qing Feng told the truth without daring to hide anything. Luo Haofeng’s mother, hearing that Mo Xiuchen was coming back, left the hospital as soon as Wen Ran was out of the operating room and went back to the hotel.
She was afraid that Mo Xiuchen would come back and give her trouble, and Luo Haofeng, who had gone to the airport to pick him up, also hoped to speak well of his mother.
Mo Xiuchen’s expression turned three shades darker, the aura he emitted carried an intimidating chill. Even if Wu Jingfang had gone back to the hotel, he would definitely find her.
He wouldn’t let the matter of Ranran’s premature birth go.
Seeing that Mo Xiuchen didn’t speak, Qing Feng did not open his mouth either, he turned his head and settled back into his seat. The whole ride was very quiet, unlike their usual chatter.
As soon as the business van arrived at Kangning Hospital, Mo Xiuchen did not wait for Qing Feng to open the door for him; he got out of the van and hurried into the hospital, taking the elevator up.
He arrived at the VIP ward floor.
Gu Yan and Wen Jin were standing in the rest area outside the elevator. Seeing Mo Xiuchen come out of the elevator, Wen Jin smiled gently at him, “I heard you went on a business trip early this morning.”
“Mm, is Ranran awake yet?”
Mo Xiuchen nodded and asked with concern.
Gu Yan immediately explained, “Mo Xiuchen, don’t worry, Ranran just lost too much blood. She should wake up by around nine o’clock tonight. Your babies are safe. Maybe you should go see the babies first.”
“No, I’ll see Ranran first.”
Mo Xiuchen did not think twice before he declined his father-in-law’s suggestion and took big strides toward the ward.
Wen Jin’s mouth twitched slightly as he watched Mo Xiuchen walk away, and remarked thoughtfully, “Uncle Gu, Mo Xiuchen actually didn’t accept your suggestion.”
Gu Yan chuckled, recalling what Mo Xiuchen had insisted over the phone, and said seriously, “You don’t know, when Mo Xiuchen learned about the incident with Ranran, what he told me.”
“What did he say?”
Wen Jin asked curiously.
Just now, he was only concerned about whether Ranran and the twins could be safe and sound; he simply had no time to care about Mo Xiuchen. Now that Ranran and the babies were safe, although she had lost a lot of blood and was weak, as long as she was safe, everything else, well, that could be discussed.
Gu Yan sighed, turned his head to watch Mo Xiuchen open the door to Ranran’s ward and go in, and said calmly, “Mo Xiuchen instructed me over the phone that if the situation was really bad and a choice had to be made, I must ensure Ranran’s safety above all.”
“He…”
Wen Jin started to say something but then fell silent.
Inside his heart, an indescribable emotion welled up. Mo Xiuchen hadn’t stopped boasting in front of them about his Ranran carrying girl and boy twins these past few months.
The pride of a soon-to-be father was evident to everyone.
He naturally loved the baby he shared with Ranran, but when it came down to choosing between Ranran and the baby, he firmly chose Ranran without hesitation. He couldn’t help but be moved by his own decision.
In the hospital room, Mother Bai and Nanny Zhang stood vigil at Wen Ran’s bedside. Upon hearing the door open, both turned around and, seeing Mo Xiuchen enter, they stood up in unison.
Looking into Mo Xiuchen’s eyes, Mother Bai’s face suddenly showed a deep sense of guilt, “Mo General, I’m sorry, I’ve caused harm to Ranran…”
“Mrs. Bai, I’ll stay with Ranran. Please go home.”
Mo Xiuchen interrupted her apology with an icy dismissal.
A slight change crossed Mother Bai’s face. Beside her, Nanny Zhang, noting the gloom on Mo Xiuchen’s face and knowing his anger, whispered, “Mrs. Bai, let me walk you out.”
Mother Bai lowered her gaze and, with a final glance at Wen Ran, followed Nanny Zhang out of the hospital room.
Mo Xiuchen, tall and straight, stood in front of the hospital bed. His deep gaze overflowed with affection as he looked at Wen Ran, pale and comatose on the bed, while tendrils of heartache and self-reproach wound tightly around his heart.
The sound of the hospital room door echoed as it was shut from the outside.
He pressed his lips together, glanced at the IV bag hanging with barely half its contents remaining, and knelt by the bed. With tender hands, he gently grasped Wen Ran’s soft hand and said softly, “Ranran, I’m back.”
On the hospital bed, Wen Ran’s eyes remained firmly closed.
No response came to Mo Xiuchen’s words.
A heavier lash of self-reproach filled his eyes as he tightened his grip on her small hand, his voice gentle and full of tenderness, “Ranran, thank you for keeping yourself and the baby safe. Do you know how scared I was when I heard something had happened to you?”
Only because she couldn’t hear, could he share his fears and panic with her.
His large, warm palm gently caressed Wen Ran’s pale cheek, “Ranran, I’m sorry that I wasn’t there for you when you needed me.”
This was the second time.
The times Ranran needed him the most, he was absent—a fact that was the source of his deepest guilt.
Before, when Ranran had jumped off the cliff and nearly lost her life, he had been far away in D Country. Now, when Ranran had fallen and given birth prematurely, he was away on a business trip once again.
He had intended to be there for Ranran, even if it meant being in the delivery room—by her side.
Mo Xiuchen gently lifted her hand to his lips for a kiss, then bent down to plant a kiss on her cheek, murmuring, “Ranran, thank you for being safe.”
Not long after Mother Bai left, a nurse came in to remove an IV.
Seeing Mo Xiuchen holding Wen Ran’s hand, his gaze tenderly fixed on her, the nurse, after removing the IV, smiled and said, “Mo General, Miss Wen will wake up in an hour or two. Wouldn’t you like to go see your little babies? They’re the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.”
“I’ll see them later.”
Mo Xiuchen replied coldly and without lifting his head.
Thwarted, the nurse touched her nose awkwardly and exited the room.
Shortly after, the door to the hospital room opened again and Wen Jin walked in. His gaze swept over Wen Ran on the bed and he said calmly, “Mo Xiuchen, being here won’t make Ranran wake up any faster. Aren’t you going to see your son and daughter?”
Mo Xiuchen turned his head to look at Wen Jin, “I’ll wait for Ranran to wake up, and then we’ll see them together.”
Those two little ones were safe and healthy; seeing them a bit later wouldn’t matter. But his Ranran was different—he needed to be here with her, wait for her to wake up, and then they could see their babies together.
“You really are an oddity. Other men would rush to see their children, but you stick by this hospital room, unwilling to leave. I’m starting to doubt you’re even a real dad.”
Wen Jin rolled her eyes, thinking Mo Xiuchen way too stubborn.
