Chapter 833: 832 Gather Evidence

“Ranran, I’m here to take care of Qianqian. You go take care of what you need to, and I’ll call you if anything comes up,”

Chen Bin said gently as he tucked in the blanket for Li Qian.

Wen Ran nodded in agreement and reminded Li Qian to rest well before leaving the hospital room.

Outside, Mo Xiuchen stood tall and graceful in the corridor, facing forward. Hearing the door open, he glanced sideways, and upon seeing Wen Ran come out, he quickly stepped forward and softly asked, “Ranran, can we go now?”

“Yeah,” Wen Ran smiled at him. “Where are we going now?”

Mo Xiuchen raised an eyebrow, his smile elegant, “I mentioned this morning over the phone, didn’t I? I was going to tell you in detail. Since you’re free today, why don’t we go home, and I can explain everything slowly.”

...

“Home?”

Wen Ran was slightly astonished, her bright eyes blinking a few times.

Mo Xiuchen’s smile deepened, “Yes, home.”

“That, this morning you mentioned Mo Jingteng was hospitalized, aren’t you going to the hospital?”

“Do you think I should?” Mo Xiuchen responded with a question, looking deeply into Wen Ran’s eyes.

Wen Ran pursed her lips and met his profound gaze. She blinked and softly said, “Personally, whether Mo Jingteng is ill or hospitalized, you don’t need to visit him because he hasn’t acted like a father should, and I hate him. Even if he died, I wouldn’t feel the slightest bit sad.”

Mo Xiuchen’s gaze grew deeper, enjoying listening to Ranran speak her mind. These were her true thoughts; although she was kind, she wasn’t a saint—she felt resentment and hatred.

“But now, you should still go and see him.”

“Mm.” Mo Xiuchen nodded in agreement, his gaze tender as he looked at her and listened to her continue, “Apart from us, the outside world doesn’t know about the things Mo Jingteng has done. If you create a bad impression by not seeing him now, it might not look good.”

“Ranran, you really do understand me best,” Mo Xiuchen said with a slight smile, his tone proud.

Reaching the elevator, he glanced at it and suggested, “Let’s take the stairs.”

“Okay.”

Wen Ran agreed readily and followed him. Not many people took the stairs in this ten-story building, making the stairwell relatively quiet.

Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran descended the stairs at a leisurely pace, step by step. Mo Xiuchen’s broad palm naturally and casually took hold of Wen Ran’s hand. She stiffened slightly, met his smiling eyes, pursed her lips, and then lowered her gaze without struggling.

The smile on Mo Xiuchen’s lips deepened, his grip slightly tightening as he continued the conversation, “After the amnesia, though I didn’t like him, I respected him enough, thinking he was my dad. But that day, after hearing the past events described by Zixuan, and knowing how many times Mo Jingteng hurt you, I stopped seeing him as an elder.”

Wen Ran looked up at Mo Xiuchen, who smiled reassuringly at her.

“Ranran, Mo Jingteng wants to control me, so after learning that I had fallen in love with you again, he wanted to hurt you further. I naturally can’t stoop to doing despicable things like he and Cheng Jia, but I have other ways to deal with them. Mo Jingteng has committed no small number of crimes in his life. I’m now gathering evidence of his crimes, and until I expose his true nature, I really can’t ignore him completely.”

“Mmm, I know.”

Wen Ran nodded, understanding him.

Mo Jingteng and Cheng Jia might have no morals or bottom lines, committing acts that were harmful to both heaven and humanity, even illegal. But she didn’t want Mo Xiuchen to be subject to gossip, to be called unfilial, heartless, and unrighteous.

While striking back and punishing the wicked was necessary, the most important thing was to use the law to punish them. It wasn’t suitable for everything to be handled through reciprocation.

You certainly couldn’t respond to someone harming you illegally by breaking the law to retaliate.

Perhaps, this was the difference between the bad and the good, and why the good sometimes found themselves in a passive position.

However, these were all temporary. Good and evil would eventually be requited; those who committed bad deeds would definitely receive their retribution. For instance, Mo Jingteng, who, throughout his life, ended up deserted by all, and now could only lie in his hospital bed. Last night, the doctor had told Mo Xiuchen that if the admittance had been delayed a bit longer, he would have ended up paralyzed.

As for Cheng Jia, her situation was even more pitiful.

No matter how she schemed, she was unable to get even a direct glance from Mo Xiuchen, no trace of his tenderness, instead living in the agony of unrequited love, forever unable to escape that cage.

On the way home, Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran received a call from Mo Jingteng, asking them to visit the hospital.

Mo Jingteng had woken up in the morning, Mo Xiuchen had stayed with him for breakfast, and then he had left the hospital where his father stayed to visit Wen Ran at Kangning Hospital.

Now, it had only been two hours, and he was calling him again, uncertain of what the matter was.

“Xiuchen, drop me off at the roadside ahead, I’ll just take a stroll around,”

Wen Ran pointed to the road ahead and said with a smile.

Mo Xiuchen shook his head: “I’ll take you home first. I don’t feel comfortable leaving you here alone. Mo Jingteng calling me won’t be anything serious, it must just be an explanation.”

That morning, Mo Xiuchen had not given Mo Jingteng a chance to speak, just made him drink some porridge, left two bodyguards there to look after him, and then left.

After dropping Wen Ran off at home, Mo Xiuchen rushed to the hospital. Upon arriving, Mo Jingteng was propped up in bed, with a special nursing assistant standing by the bed, and the two bodyguards respectfully standing at the door of the ward.

“Xiuchen, have a seat.”

Mo Jingteng looked wan and aged, breathing slightly weak, even his eyes that usually held a sharpness now seemed to bleed a bit of murkiness.

Mo Xiuchen walked briskly to the bedside, inquired briefly from the special nursing assistant about Mo Jingteng’s condition during these two hours, and asked her to step out.

With the special nurse gone, only Mo Xiuchen and Mo Jingteng were left in the ward. He sat down on the chair beside the bed, his expression indifferent, and his tone even more tinged with a hint of sternness, “Dad, what did you need to see me for?”

That morning when Mo Jingteng woke up, Mo Xiuchen had shown the same demeanor.

Now, he still maintained a colder attitude than usual, which made Mo Jingteng feel a tightness in his heart and gasp subconsciously, “Xiuchen, I wanted to explain about last night. Everything, that wretched Cheng Jia deliberately provoked divisions in our father-son relationship, fabricating those stories.”

“Weren’t you still speaking in favor of Cheng Jia before?”

Mo Xiuchen’s brows lightly furrowed, his handsome features hardening with a layer of iciness, which even Mo Jingteng felt intimidated by. Feeling guilty, he said, “Xiuchen, I misjudged Cheng Jia before. I thought she was devoted to you unlike Wen Ran who not only betrayed you but also got involved with your brother.”

“Ranran is not that kind of person.”

The sudden chill in Mo Xiuchen’s low voice startled Mo Jingteng so much that his old face visibly changed.
