“Mom, how could you not know that the sauce jar was something good? You should have taken a look at it and tried the sauce at least,” her daughter could not help but say and Madam Su’s expression turned dark.
She knew what her daughter was trying to say and couldn’t help but snort, “Do you think that I will dare to eat anything that your aunt brought back with her? Who knows if there was poison in it? Your aunt has always been such a money grubber who is prepared to make small benefits and take advantage of others. How was I supposed to know that she too could do something good once in a blue moon?”
“When we were young, she would always add laxatives in my food, all because she wanted to pursue the same mer whom I liked. And she did the same when our mother decided to send me to the school. I thought that she had the same plan this time around. How was I supposed to know that she brought something good? All I learned from my childhood till now was that you cannot trust that woman.”
Master Su: “…”
Their daughter: “….”
So, it couldn’t be blamed on their mother/wife either.
Master Su then couldn’t help but say, “Then why don’t you go and ask your sister to give you more jars of sauce? Not many but ten. Tell her that she can pay back the debt that she owes us as long as she hands the sauce jars to us.”
“I am afraid it will not work.” Madam Su shook her head as she knew what kind of virtue Su Yun had. “That woman actually set up a bidding stall at the market and sold each jar for more than five hundred taels. I don’t know why she handed those jars of sauce to us but I don’t think she will do it again.”
“Five–five hundred taels?” Master Su was stunned when he heard the words of his wife. He felt his mouth fall to the ground and no matter how much he tried, he could not pick it back up. Five —five hundred taels? That was so much money! Who would buy a jar of meat sauce for that much money? But if his sister-in-law sold the jars at that price, then clearly they were the ones who took advantage of her the last time and there was no way he could do the same thing again!
His daughter, on the other hand, stomped her feet and said in agitation, “Mother, you have to do something. My lover doesn’t even want any money; he just wants jars of sauce. Can’t you fulfil such a small request of his?”
“Min Min, have you lost your mind? Did you not hear what I said just now? Your aunt sold those jars for five hundred taels of silver,” snapped madam Su. “And your lover wants ten of those, which means that he wants something that costs around fifty thousand taels. Do you dare to say that this lover of yours doesn’t have any hidden intentions?”
“He clearly is trying to open his tiger mouth and taking a bite of your head. You are the only one who is foolish enough to think that he is being kind to you and this family! As if!”
“Then–then what are we going to do?” Master Su asked worriedly. “Break off the marriage? But everyone in the village knows that our daughter is getting married to the son of the chief; if we break the marriage, our family’s reputation will be ruined by us.”
As soon as his daughter heard that they were going to break the marriage, she panicked and turned to look at her mother. “I don’t want to break the marriage, mother.”
“Then you have to go and tell your little lover that he would have to make do with whatever we give to him. Tell him that there is no way we can take advantage of others and if he tries to quibble, tell her that the jars of sauce that were given to him were more than a thousand taels. If he wants to break off the marriage, then he needs to return the sauce jars to us without a scoop missing!”
“He had already taken quite a lot of advantage of our family.”
Once she finished speaking, she got to her feet and then walked out of the room with a tired expression. Seeing her leave, Master Su chased after her.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“I will go and ask Su Yun if she can hand us a jar or two,” replied Madam Su. “If she agrees, then I will tell her that she did not need to pay the money back that she took from us.”
Since her daughter liked this mer so much, she would try to get her a few jars of sauces if she could. Madam Su travelled to the village where her sister lived.
However, as soon as she arrived at the house of her sister, she realised that there were quite a lot of people standing in front of the house and all of them were dressed in really expensive clothes.
“What’s going on here?” she asked one of the villagers.
“Ah, are you here to buy the sauce as well?” The village woman looked at Madam Su and asked. She was not surprised when she saw another woman coming to see Su Yun, as they were now used to seeing rich and powerful women coming to knock on the doors of Su Yun.
Madam Su: “…”
She heaved a sigh before asking, “Are these women here to buy the sauces as well?”
“Or else? Why do you think that they are lining up like this? Madam Su only gets a single jar of sauce from the mall every three days and these people are all here to bid for it.”
No sooner did the woman finish speaking, the door of Su Yun’s house opened and stepped out a well-dressed Su Yun who was carrying a large jar of sauce.
“Alright, everyone, the bid will start with the same price, a hundred taels!” Su Yun announced smugly. “I will start counting to three and you all can place your bets. Once you are done placing your bets, the highest bidder will earn this jar of sauce.”
“Then let’s go,”
“Three.”
“Two.”
“One.”
“Two hundred taels!”
“Three hundred and fifty taels!”
“Four hundred taels!”
“Four hundred and eight taels!”
“Five hundred taels!”
“Five hundred and seventy taels!”
“Seven hundred taels!” a woman in vibrant red clothes yelled as she pushed the other woman aside the second she jumped down the carriage.
“Madam Peng, what are you doing here?” Someone in the crowd recognised the woman and was stunned when they saw that it was actually Madam Peng, the biggest merchant of the Pudeng village.
Madam Peng smiled at the rest of the women and said, “Ladies, please show me some face and let me buy this jar of sauce. A really important matter is dependent on it. As long as you give me a little face—you can purchase anything that you want for a hundred taels from my shop.”
No one wanted to offend Madam Peng when they heard these words. Though this woman was not an official, she had very good control over the market of Pudeng. There was nothing wrong with letting her own a favour.
Thus, the sauce jar was handed to Madam Peng, who tested and tasted it. Once she knew that the sauce was the same, she paid the money and left immediately.
Su Yun grinned happily when she got the money and wanted to count it but before she could, someone cleared their throat behind her.
“Ahem.”
“Husband,” Su Yu smiled flatteringly at her husband, Master Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan was amused when he saw the expression of his wife. In the past, when he brought the jars of sauces, his wife, his in-laws, and even the mer husbands of his wife scolded him, and they even looked down on him when he told them that he was going to sell sauces at the stall at the Bo and Bun mall.
They looked at him as if he were a lunatic and called him stupid for selling sauces instead of fighting his way to the meat or vegetable stalls.
And now they were begging him to bring more sauce jars at home and no one dared to offend him. As long as he frowned, his wife would lower her head and coax him well because she knew that the new path of her wealth was opened by him and as long as he was unhappy, she would not get anything in return. Even the mer husbands of his wife was upset and jealous of him.
“The money, you said that I can have more than half of it. So hand it here.”
