After Mo Fei held her concert in Beijing, she didn’t return immediately. Following the company’s arrangements, she attended a signing event over the weekend and didn’t return to Jiangcheng until Monday.
“Sister, should we go back to the company, or go straight home?” Mo Xiaojuan raised her hand and looked at her watch.
Mo Fei parted her lips slightly, wanting to say they should go to the company. But at the thought of facing Niu Meiling, she couldn’t quite summon the courage. So, she shook her head and said, “Let’s go home. We’ll go to the company tomorrow.”
Mo Xiaojuan didn’t think much of it. She nodded and said, “Alright, you can rest one more day.”
When Mo Fei arrived home, Xixi had already gone to kindergarten, but Yang Yi was still there. As soon as she opened the gate, Yang Yi appeared before her with a smile.
“Wife, welcome back!” Yang Yi brought his hand out from behind his back, revealing a bouquet of vibrant peonies. He wasn’t really hiding them well, as the bouquet was quite large and Yang Yi couldn’t conceal it completely.
Mo Fei’s mood instantly brightened. She took the flowers and giggled, “What are you doing? Why so grand?”
“It’s because this is your first concert after so many years, and it was a huge success! I have to congratulate you! Let’s celebrate!” Yang Yi opened his arms and smiled.
Mo Fei’s cheeks flushed slightly. Holding the flowers, she leaned sideways into Yang Yi’s embrace, letting him hold her, and said softly, “My success is all because of you. If you hadn’t written so many songs for me…”
Yang Yi hugged her tightly and interrupted her with a hint of heartache, saying, “Nonsense. You succeeded because you worked so hard and gave it your all. Just listen to your voice—after just one concert, it’s not as strong as before and even sounds a bit hoarse.”“This is normal. After a concert, I just need to rest for a while.”
“How about I ask Chen Yijie to help you out next time? Last time, you helped him warm up the stage; this time, let him come and do the same for you.”
“That would be embarrassing! Last time… don’t think I don’t know what happened. It wasn’t like he invited me himself—you were the one who asked him for me…”
“What’s there to be embarrassed about? He still wants me to write songs for him. Besides, we have such a good relationship—asking him to help out with one song is no big deal. It’s not like we wouldn’t pay him…”
The two continued their sweet banter, embracing each other as they went upstairs.
……
In the afternoon, Mo Fei, finally able to rest peacefully, slept for a long time. When she woke up groggily and opened the bedroom door, she heard meowing coming from the living room.
Curious, she turned her head and saw Yang Yi holding the chubby, struggling Xiao Guai, stuffing him into a portable cat carrier. Inside, the other two British Shorthairs had already been locked in and were now poking their heads out, looking around in confusion.
“Meow!” Duoduo looked at Yang Yi and let out a short cry.
Her big, puzzled eyes seemed to be reproachfully saying: Hooman, what are you up to now?
“What are you doing? Why are you catching them?” Mo Fei asked in confusion.
Yang Yi took off his gloves and pulled Mo Fei aside into the dining room, whispering to her, “Today we’re taking them to get spayed and neutered. Someone told me before that they’re almost at the age where they’ll start going into heat, so they need to be spayed and neutered. Otherwise, they’ll be making noise all day and producing a bunch of kittens!”
Mo Fei understood and nodded, then couldn’t help but laugh, saying, “Alright, but why are you whispering? Are you afraid they’ll understand?”
Yang Yi quickly turned to look at the living room, then turned back and said, as if facing a great threat, “Shh, Keep your voice down!”
“A few days ago, someone told me that when taking them for neutering, we mustn’t let them realize it was us who did it. We have to act like they were taken by some bad guys and that we’re on their side. That way, they won’t hold a grudge against us—cats are very perceptive!” Yang Yi had a somewhat mysteriously serious look on his face, which was quite rare to see.
Mo Fei burst into laughter and said, “So what’s your plan?”
“First, we’ll go to the coffee shop. In a while, Guo Ziyi will come to help!” Yang Yi asked, “Do you want to come along and watch?”
Mo Fei’s eyes sparkled, and she nodded with great interest.
A while later, Yang Yi and Mo Fei appeared downstairs at the coffee shop with the cat carrier, sitting at a booth like regular customers, drinking coffee and chatting happily.
Of course, it was all an act. Mo Fei’s acting skills weren’t great. She couldn’t help but sneak a glance at the cat carrier on the floor beside them.
Inside the carrier, the three British Shorthairs were restless. They liked to crawl into small, enclosed spaces but didn’t like being locked in a cold wire cage with no freedom. Almost as if taking turns, when Xiao Guai moved his head away from the cage door, Xiao Hui’s big round face immediately pressed up against it, staring at his owner while pawing at the wire mesh.
“Is it almost time?” Mo Fei didn’t know how to keep up the act of chatting happily, so she could only let out an awkward chuckle and asked in a low voice.
At the bar counter, Yang Huan was laughing uncontrollably as she watched Ding Xiang helping Guo Ziyi. Guo Ziyi wore a crooked, roguish cap with large sunglasses, and Ding Xiang was helping him tie a large floral cloth to cover his face.
“Where did you even get that mask? It looks just like the flowery underwear worn by the aunts in our village!” Yang Huan laughed uncontrollably.
“All done.” Ding Xiang couldn’t help but laugh as well.
“No more talking, I’m going in!” Guo Ziyi didn’t bother responding to Yang Huan. He adjusted his oversized sunglasses and charged forward with determination.
The stylishly dressed “bandit” rushed over, grabbed the cat carrier, and ran off.
Yang Yi sprang to his feet as if in a panic, spreading his fingers wide like Erkang in a meme1
, and shouted, “Robbery! Quick, stop him! He stole my cats!”
However, he didn’t move a single step.
Mo Fei turned her head and saw Yang Yi’s exaggerated expression. She couldn’t hold it in any longer. She quickly turned away, buried her head in the table, her shoulders shaking, trying hard not to laugh out loud—it was tough.
Guo Ziyi was fully committed to the act. He carried the bewildered cats and hurried out the door, where a taxi was already waiting. As soon as he got in, the car quickly drove away.
There were actually a few customers in the coffee shop, but they had been informed beforehand. They played along, pretending not to see anything. Only after Guo Ziyi rushed out did they finally burst into laughter.
Yang Yi also shook his head and laughed, cupping his hands in thanks to the customers.
Yang Huan jumped over and said with a grin, “Brother, your acting was terrible. Too over-the-top, not heartfelt enough!”
“You little girl, what do you know?” Yang Yi retorted, slightly embarrassed. “Besides, I was acting for the cats, not for real.”
“What’s next? Should we follow and check on them?” Mo Fei, having finished laughing, began to worry.
“Sure!” Yang Yi nodded and said, “Let’s change clothes first. By the time we get to the pet hospital, Xiao Guai and the others will probably already be under anesthesia. Even if we go to see them, they won’t recognize us.”
