Chapter 1024: 1024 Expanding Influence
Once the visitors were pulled away from the performance, which the unfortunate Nathan kept trying to return to every time he lost focus, The Witches led the team to their rooms, while Wolfe played Defence, keeping them from getting pulled in to the many shops and tourist traps along the way.
Once they were settled into their rooms, they could peruse to their heart’s content, but Wolfe wasn’t going to follow them around all night to make sure that they had somewhere to sleep.
Cassie made sure they all had a map of the city, including their room details, and they left the representatives with a promise that the next day’s meetings wouldn’t begin until after lunch, so they had time to form a proper opinion on the city before they started to negotiate.
The adaptation to a mixed city like Forest Grove would be a big one for some of the more closed-minded, but Wolfe didn’t think that they had much to worry about with this group.
“Should we have someone fill in for those meetings so that you can greet all the Nobles who are coming from the Fallen Empire, the Master Craftsmen and students?” Cassie asked as they left the representatives teams behind.
Wolfe considered that for a moment. “Yeah, that might be for the best. I will make an appearance at the start, and then we can leave it to someone else. I think that dragging that one out might actually work in our favour, as they get to see so much more of the city and indulge in a day or two of the festivals.
They will want to get a good taste of what people want, and what the next big things are. They’re businessmen, they’ll take the bait, and before they know it, they’ll be looking for ways to send even more off world.”
Ella laughed. “I didn’t know that you had such a soft spot for King Petros and his people.”
Wolfe winked at her. “The influx will shake their entire social order, but it will pull our people out of the lingering poverty from the Great War. As soon as we can get enough mages spread around to make all the raw materials, we will be a household name in every word of their Empire, famous for the simple household luxuries that we take for granted.
Don’t forget most of their people are still cooking over open flames, but they have the ability to use Unholy magic. Once we get them in front of a magical stove and a refrigerator, how do you think they’ll react?”
The Witches laughed. The people of the Fallen Empire had both, but they were stupidly expensive, as they required complex crystal arrays and precious gems, precision cut. So, they were luxury items for only the richest.
But Forest Grove could convert a small fridge and resell it for under 200 units, cheap enough that even the common labourers of the Fallen Empire could afford to have one in their home. Not to mention the fact that they could just create gems with Earth Magic, which was going to allow the crafters who came to live here to absolutely crush their competitors back home when it came to pricing.
Of course, the witches could just sell you a cold charm, and you could make any box a cooler or freezer, but that wasn’t the same sort of luxury status item that a proper fridge was.
They made a slow loop of the festival to talk to the people and listen to any concerns they had about the new developments in town, and the changes in the market layout to accommodate new types of vendors.
It was going fairly smoothly so far, though the festival didn’t actually start for one more day. The only real concerns were from shops who had accidentally been paired up with a luxury or discount brand of the same thing they were selling. Having them too close together was giving the vendors headaches, as they had to compete with someone who could see and tempt their customers.
Fortunately, there was an easy solution to that. Wolfe just made a list and gave it to the vendors, who were free to make arrangements to trade spots if someone else was willing, and then they could bring it to the Pentacles before they changed, to ensure nobody was being bullied out of their spots.
By the time that they made it back to the stage, the Siren was finishing her set, and Nathan, the tone-deaf assistant, was still staring up at her in awe. It looked like she had noticed, and the last song was sung directly to him, in such a sultry tone that even the other Fae were feeling hot under the collar.
Wolfe gave her a concerned look, and got a voice in his head replying to his concern.
[I think he is my tone match, like a destined perfect mate for Sirens. It’s rare that one is a human, but I promise to treat him well.]
[He has to work after lunch.] Wolfe mouthed back at her, and the Siren smirked as she finished her song and waved at the crowd, before pulling Nathan up on stage with her for the encore.
When she draped herself over his shoulder to sing using the same microphone, magic settled over him, and a deep voice, perfectly matched to her tenor, joined the song. It was nothing like his speaking voice, so it had to be part of the Siren’s magic.
Even Nathan looked shocked that he could sing.
The last stop was underground to check on the young Witches, to ensure that they had everything they needed. Mary had been complaining that many of them were trying to skip class during past festivals so that they could make extra money on Rank One charms, and Wolfe was curious about how they had dealt with that issue this time around.
Telling them no was pointless, so he hoped that they had come up with something good, though he hadn’t seen any of their names on vendor stall applications.
