Chapter 1047: Empty Town
“First, you need to boost your combat skills…” Black Silk barely finished the sentence before Xia Na gave a light smack to the back of its head.
“Well…” Xia Na glanced at the slightly anxious Xu Shuhan and said, “To be honest, if you just look at it on the surface, it’s not entirely wrong…”
“Then why did you hit me?”
“Because fundamentally, we’re not even talking about the same thing!” Xia Na exhaled and continued with a smile, “Regardless, improving your strength is essential for survival, especially for Zombies. Advancing in evolution basically means everything. Of course, you’re different from us because you retained all your memories and Intelligence even after mutation, and even a bit of emotion…”
“Fear, huh…” Xu Shuhan gave a bitter smile, “I never imagined I’d turn into a timid Zombie. Before I mutated, I’d never heard of such a thing… But maybe this just shows that deep down, I’m really just a coward. This kind of life, where you constantly have to fight for survival, might not be suitable for me…”
“Is that why you want me to be your mentor?” Black Silk asked.
“I never said anything about mentorship! But as for reasons, that’s just one of them… Another reason is that I want to become stronger so that I can do what I really want to do. Ling Mo once told me that living isn’t just about surviving, and I think I still believe that. So…” Xu Shuhan said earnestly, “Let me owe you a little more. Just for these few days…”
It seemed she had been pondering this for a long time, and Ling Mo’s current state was the perfect opportunity to bring it up. Even so, she waited three days. Only after confirming Ling Mo’s condition was stable did she nervously broach the subject.
Xia Na bit her lip, thought for a moment, and then suddenly smiled, giving Xu Shuhan a once-over. “In simple terms, you just want me to train you, right?”
“Ah? Well… I wouldn’t put it that way… It’s just… you seem to have learned martial arts. So… you know, I have no combat foundation at all, and replenishing firearms isn’t that convenient. Plus, for Zombies, the most powerful weapon is actually the body. Therefore…”
Xu Shuhan was initially taken aback, then suddenly felt a chill… She couldn’t help but glance at Black Silk, only to find it shaking its head at her with sympathy…
“What?! But Xia Na seemed so serious and stern just now… Was it an illusion? No, no, how could it be an illusion… A disguise? That doesn’t make sense either! How could a Zombie disguise itself! But how do I explain this feeling… Could it be she can change her expression at will…”
At this moment, Xia Na had already approached her, holding the Scythe. The girl, with her long hair draping over her shoulders, had eyes that glimmered with a faint Red Glimmer. She squinted slightly as she stared at Xu Shuhan, “So, do you want to become stronger, or do you want to remain a weak Zombie? Unable to do anything, unable to help anyone… heh… this isn’t the life you want, is it?”
“I never said those exact words… although that’s indeed what I think. But I never said it!” Xu Shuhan’s heart raced wildly. She pressed her lips together and, under Xia Na’s intense gaze, nodded with difficulty, “Of course… I want to become stronger.”
“Louder.”
“I want to become stronger!”
After shouting, Xu Shuhan turned her head away, secretly pinching her palm, “There’s never been a more embarrassing moment in my life… has the training already begun?”
However, when she looked up again, she found that the eerie girl in front of her had broken into a bright smile, gently patting her shoulder, “Don’t worry, I’ll help you out. Honestly, when I was human, I was quite the good-natured person…”
“Re-really? I’m… so happy…” Xu Shuhan said, tears streaming down her face.
She glanced at Ling Mo lying on the bed and thought to herself, “Ling Mo, I’m starting to regret taking advantage of your situation… please wake up soon!”
“Let’s start with weapon selection. Long weapons are difficult to handle, so considering your situation, I suggest you use your hands directly…”
Meanwhile, Ling Mo, lying under the covers, furrowed his brow ever so slightly…
“There’s a Shop over there! Hurry up, we might find some food! If we can find canned goods and drinks, even better!” Mu Chen suddenly pointed ahead, shouting excitedly on the street. ᚱΆ₦òBĚ𝐒
But just then, Yuwen Xuan grabbed him, whispering, “Wait a minute! Mu Chen, don’t you feel something?”
“What?” Mu Chen looked around and said.
Though both were seasoned Survivors, Mu Chen had inevitably become a bit lax after not encountering danger for a while. In fact, there really wasn’t much to be wary of on this street… apart from a few broken-down cars, the entire street was deserted, and the only living beings seemed to be the two of them.
“You know, when you put it that way, it really is quite creepy…” Mu Chen took a careful look around, then glared at him sullenly, “But that’s still better than having you follow me around! Save it, no matter how much you try to trick me, I’m not going to search with you. This place isn’t very big, but it’s not small either; even if they really are hiding, who knows where they could be…” After saying this, he turned his head and continued walking towards the Shop, “And who knows if we’ll even find food, let alone have time for your craziness… A whole family… pah, a whole group of people waiting to eat, do you think it’s easy for me!”
As he spoke, he muttered under his breath, “Damn! When did I become a nanny…”
Yuwen Xuan stood still where he was. He adjusted the straps of his backpack, shifting his cautious gaze slowly from left to right.
The street was empty, with overturned vehicles containing nothing. The restaurants and shops around were pitch dark, their doors mostly left ajar, occasionally swaying in the wind…
“Mu Chen…” Yuwen Xuan’s expression suddenly turned strange, he quickened his steps and grabbed Mu Chen again, speaking hurriedly, “Such an obvious thing, and we didn’t even notice…”
“What didn’t we notice?” Mu Chen asked.
“There’s nothing here!” Yuwen Xuan said.
A cold wind blew past them.
Mu Chen frowned, his expression seemingly saying, “Are you kidding me…”
“That’s right, it’s because there’s nothing here… that’s why we didn’t notice! We should have realized it on the first day…” Yuwen Xuan said excitedly.
“What are you trying to say…” Mu Chen pressed him. He had a feeling that Yuwen Xuan wasn’t joking this time; he might have really discovered something.
“I mean, it’s not just the Zombies that are missing, there’s something else…” Yuwen Xuan pointed towards a small restaurant nearby, “Look, here… there are no corpses!”
Mu Chen followed his gaze… The restaurant was in shambles, tables and chairs scattered haphazardly on the floor, walls splattered with dark brown blood stains, and the shattered glass door covered with a layer of accumulated grime… But Yuwen Xuan was right, in this “ruin,” there were indeed no bones to be seen…
The various bones in the streets and buildings were a common sight for Survivors… Because they were so accustomed to it, the sudden absence went unnoticed. It could also be said that the abnormal situation of “no one around” shifted their attention away from such details…
“This… clearly something terrible happened here, right?” Mu Chen asked.
“Yep…” Yuwen Xuan nodded.
“Then… where are the bodies?” Mu Chen asked again.
Quickly, he turned his gaze to every spot on the street marked with bloodstains. But forget about finding a skeleton; he couldn’t even spot a single bone. Yet, near those bloodstains, there were suspicious black objects congealed on the ground.
After a moment of stunned silence, Mu Chen suddenly broke out in a cold sweat. He turned to look at Yuwen Xuan, and the two exchanged a glance.
If there’s nothing left here… then who collected the bodies of those humans and Zombies?
This question… the more you think about it, the more terrifying it becomes!
Looking at this empty town again, Mu Chen felt not just eerie but downright horrifying!
“Come to think of it, it’s not just the skeletons; there aren’t any birds here either,” Mu Chen slowly raised his arm, pointing upwards.
Yuwen Xuan nodded vigorously.
The two exchanged another glance, and both saw deep unease in each other’s eyes.
“Quick, grab the stuff and let’s head back!” Mu Chen decided swiftly.
Yuwen Xuan agreed, and the two dashed towards the Shop, moving at a speed several times faster than before…
“Smoke?” On the empty ground of the abandoned factory, a Pilot removed his greasy, blackened gloves and pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, walking over to ask Ye Kai. Seeing Ye Kai shake his head, he casually sat on the front hood, lighting a cigarette as he asked, “How’s the Boss?”
Ye Kai glanced back towards the small building and said, “Probably still asleep…”
“When the Boss wakes up, you guys will start the operation, right?” the Pilot asked.
“Yeah, once it’s done, we’ll need you for support,” Ye Kai replied.
“Naturally…” the Pilot said, taking a satisfied drag.
Ye Kai thought for a moment and asked, “By the way, where’s the other guy?”
The Pilot chuckled and said casually, “Probably went to the restroom.”
Ye Kai immediately sat up straight, frowning, “When? Where?”
“Just went, don’t worry, he’s definitely nearby…” the Pilot laughed.
But Ye Kai had already jumped off the car, frowning, “Then why didn’t I see him?”
“How could that be, he’s probably just…” The Pilot raised his hand to point, but suddenly froze, quickly standing up and looking around in shock, “This can’t be…”
