"You… you're a demon."
She was afraid of dying, but if she could just save her granddaughter then she'd be able to die without regrets.
Looking at Xiao Fang furiously, she gritted her teeth and said,
"How dare you look down on me," the grandmother said with conviction in her gaze.
Suddenly, her eyes turned blue and her aura grew. She was burning her soul essence, but it didn't change anything.
Xiao Fang scoffed.
"With what ability? Even if you could, I'm merely a clone. There's nothing you can do to me."
The grandmother paused as she processed his words, then the furocity she displayed suddenly died down, turning to despair. She knew he was telling the truth because her [ Soul Searching ] technique didn't work on him earlier. She tried to think of another way, but she couldn't.
In that moment, she felt as if all hope was lost, and sorrow filled her heart, especially when she saw her unconscious granddaughter laying slouched against the wall.
Looking at Xiao Fang's covered face, she finally dropped down to her knees, lowered her gaze, and changed her tone.
"Young Master, you can have my life, but please spare my granddaughter."
Xiao Fang's expression didn't change, but truthfully he was a bit taken aback.
Paying attention to the beating of her heart, he could tell she was being sincere. Since when has someone from the Chaos sect ever asked for mercy, and an Elder at that.
Xiao Fang pressed his sword to her neck, but she didn't flinch, it was as if she had already accepted her fate.
For the next few minutes, Xiao Fang interrogated her, asking her questions to figure out the situation they were in. To his surprise, she answered every question truthfully and never hesitated for even a second.
…
'What kind of situation is this,' Xiao Fang thought.
From what he learned, her name was Luo Biya, and her granddaughter's name was Luo Yue. Luo Biya really was from the Chaos sect, but not only that, she was able to sneak into the Black Paradise sect using her taboo cultivation technique, [ Soul Merge ] which allowed her to merge herself to her granddaughter for a short period of time.
As for her granddaughter, although she was born into the Chaos sect, she never became an official member of that sect. Her family clan was relatively insignificant there, because they were never strong enough to be recognized by the main powers that governed it.
Being the generational genius her family discovered her to be at birth, they decided to send Luo Yue abroad to train and expand her skillset, in hopes that she'd one day return to make a name for her family clan in the Chaos sect. Currently, she was their family clan's only hope.
Asking about why they were here, he learned that they were a hunting/taming family clan. Luo Yue was able to find the Abnormal Cannibal beast using a beast-finder tool her family clan gave her. She wanted to use the [ soul puppet ] technique to make it her primary soul beast, but it was too strong for her, so she asked her grandmother's for help.
This was their 2nd attempt trying to subdue the beast, but from the looks of it, they were likely going to fail again.
…
"Your family's cultivation method. Hand it over."
The grandmother finally hesitated, but she still did as he asked.
Such cowardice, Xiao Fang almost didn't know what to think.
Taking a look at it, Xiao Fang could understand why their family clan wasn't anything special in the Chaos sect. It was even weaker than the Black Paradise sect's [ Illusory method ]. They were small fries in the grand scale of things. Eliminating them would do nothing to the Chaos sect.
[ Books speak to the mind, friends to the heart, and heaven to the soul. Though the mind can be cloudy, and the heart swayed, all things are clear to the soul… ]
Truthfully, Xiao Fang was foreign to the concept of a soul, so many of the things said in the text went right over his head.
"What is this soul it keeps talking about?"
Luo Biya tried to explain it to Xiao Fang as simply as she could, but Xiao Fang still couldn't understand.
"If you had a twin, with the same heart, mind, and dantian, would that mean you were in 2 places at once? Why are you in that body but not the other?"
Xiao Fang just squinted at her slightly.
Xiao Fang turned his attention back to the text, but this time when he read it, he felt as if he could finally gain some comprehension.
"Is this really a cultivation method?" Xiao Fang said, noticing that it was unlike any cultivation method he had ever seen before.
"It is, but it's a little different. While other Cultivation methods would only either cultivate the Body or Spirit, our method focuses on cultivating the soul," she explained.
"How do you do that?" Xiao Fang asked.
"The same way you'd practice any cultivation method, but instead of using something like your sword to strengthen your Body Cultivation, we would use our Spirit Cultivation to strengthen our souls."
"So when it comes down to it, it's simply a Spirit Cultivation method," Xiao Fang said with a bit of annoyance in his tone.
He was starting to feel like she was just trying to make her Cultivation Method seem more special than it really was.
Sensing Xiao Fang's annoyance, the grandmother didn't hold her tongue when she said,
"The world is vast, and you are young. You're merely a frog in a well, and in that well all you can only see are the many types of body or spirit cultivation techniques. Do you understand where your body draws its power from? What gives our Qi force? This method was designed by Venerable Mo ZhuDong after he encountered an immortal over a thousand years ago. You think you know something, but you don't!
The world outside of this well is vast and you are small. Don't be so arrogant."
She had hoped that by mentioning Mo ZhuDong's name that she'd get Xiao Fang interested in the Cultivation Method, but since Xiao Fang had no idea who anyone in the Chaos sect's distant history was, the name meant nothing to him.
Xiao Fang wasn't moved by her words, but by the beating of her heart. He could tell by listening to it that there was more to her cultivation method that met the eye.
However, flipping through the pages of the book, Xiao Fang couldn't see a single cultivation technique stronger than the Spirit Core realm.
Cultivation Method: Soul Devouring Method
Realm: Spirit Core realm
Techniques: 3 foundation, 2 refinement, and 1 core realm
Specialty: Tracking, hunting, and taming people and beasts
Seeing that Xiao Fang was analyzing her family clan's cultivation method, she asked,
"Is Young Master interested in our cultivation method?"
Truthfully, the Soul Devouring Method wasn't too useful to him, but the existence of a Chaos sect member in the sect opened up another opportunity.
"I might be, but there's something I need you to do for me first," Xiao Fang replied.
