Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 247: The Carriage JourneySu Jin sighed; these children, although pitiable, were beyond her help.
In the apocalypse, such trade was a grey area tacitly accepted by people; nobody would adopt and provide for these children.
Even if she bought all the children now, the middle-aged man would just find more to sell.
It wasn’t until the middle-aged man left with the few remaining children that Ban Xiaobo and the others couldn’t believe that Su Jin had actually bought a child?!
“What happened?”
Tian Liao and Gao Lei, who had also tended to customers buying cars, came over to ask.
“Uh, I accidentally… just bought one,”
Su Jin actually felt somewhat guilty; it seemed she had indeed accidentally bought some trouble.
But that was Rong Yuan.
Although she didn’t know why Rong Yuan was like this now, that name, along with that severed arm, and the face she had seen only from a distance, couldn’t be mistook.Back then, not only had Rong Yuan lost an arm, but his left leg was also missing half. After awakening his Metal Element Ability, he had managed to regrow both limbs, albeit in metal. His transformation had left a profound impression on Su Jin.
Furthermore, in the second year of his previous life, Rong Yuan had become one of the top Metal Element Ability Users. Su Jin had only caught a glimpse of him during an award ceremony in a small base, where she heard he had single-handedly dived into a horde of zombies and killed dozens of mutated zombies. Although he was celebrated and renowned at that time, his young age or perhaps his reclusive personality led him to be used as a pawn in power struggles. Betrayed by his teammates, he ultimately died from poisoning…
Whenever people spoke of him, it was with a tone of regret.
She never imagined she would encounter him here today.
Yet now, he looked so young…
“Aren’t you short of hands? How about he becomes your apprentice here? You don’t have to pay him,”
Su Jin said to Ban Xiaobo and the rest, having made up her mind.
“This…”
Ban Xiaobo wanted to say they were indeed short of hands, but they were looking to hire a Metal Element Ability User, not a boy with a missing arm who also looked so frail.
“I think it’s feasible. At night he can also stay here to mind the shop for you,” although there isn’t much to look after in your shop.
Lu Hao held back the latter part of his sentence, but his words really did make the others accept the idea.
With an additional free worker who could also keep watch over the shop, they had nothing to lose.
Seeing Ban Xiaobo and the others agreed, Su Jin remembered that she still had to ask Rong Yuan for his opinion. If he disagreed, she wouldn’t force him.
She walked over to the boy with the severed arm, smiling, and said, “Hello, I’m Su Jin.”
Rong Yuan turned his head away, seeming uninterested in engaging with her, yet the flush of red at his ear betrayed his true feelings.
Unperturbed, Su Jin continued, “You’re free now. Do you have any plans for what you want to do next?”
Rong Yuan shook his head, still not daring to look up at Su Jin.
“How about becoming an apprentice in this garage, start learning some skills to support yourself, would that be okay?”
Her words seemed to be seeking his approval at every turn, which made Rong Yuan somewhat moved. The trafficker had said that he could only be a watchdog, less valuable than a dog. ʀἈN∅ΒΕṩ
But this person kept asking for his opinion; now that she had bought him, he was free. Could he actually choose what he wanted?
“I am Rong Yuan. I’m willing,”
Rong Yuan finally lifted his head and looked at her as he responded.
Seeing his agreement, Su Jin’s eyes curved into a smile. What remote personality? Wasn’t he quite manageable?
Ren Feipeng actually quite liked Rong Yuan, and had there not been another customer walking into the car dealership, he would have taken Rong Yuan back for a change of clothes.
“Xiao Ren, he had a younger brother before, but unfortunately…”
Gao Lei said, watching Ren Feipeng who was taking Rong Yuan inside to familiarize him with the environment.
So that was it, both Su Jin and Lu Hao expressed their understanding.
Seeing the car dealership gradually getting busier, Lu Hao said goodbye to the group for the moment. Before leaving, Su Jin mentioned she had some clothes that would fit Rong Yuan and would bring them over later.
“Why did Xiao Jin just buy that boy?”
While walking on the road, Lu Hao finally couldn’t help but ask.
Su Jin laughed and shared what she knew with Lu Hao.
“A talent, I just hope he won’t regret and die,” Su Jin said.
That made sense, and Lu Hao nodded in agreement.
“You mean he might grow mechanical arms in the future?”
Lu Hao thought this was quite novel, as he seemed to have only seen such a thing in movies.
“If nothing goes wrong, he should,” replied Su Jin with a smile.
On their way back, they noticed indeed that many people were driving towards the base entrance, and many groups were also walking towards them.
Su Jin felt comforted by Liang Wei’s decision from before. The people he personally pushed forward seemed to no longer be stranded on the beach.
As they passed the shantytown, they noticed many street stalls set up next to it. The merchandise was mostly useless trinkets, nothing that caught Su Jin’s interest as worth buying.
One stall was even selling the latest model of a fruit-branded smartphone for the price of a bag of instant noodles, but passersby only glanced at it without any interest in buying.
However, the stall that attracted the most people was one selling cold weapons. Rusty long swords and daggers were laid out, and everyone was crowding around even for a broken kitchen knife which sold for 15 crystal cores.
Remembering that she had only spent 8 crystal cores to buy Rong Yuan, Su Jin could only shake her head helplessly at the reality that human life was as cheap as grass in the apocalypse.
Lu Hao looked at the shantytown with a complex expression. Many gaunt individuals lined the sides of the road, mostly elderly and women. They watched the passersby expressionlessly, as if waiting for something or perhaps waiting for nothing at all.
As Su Jin and Lu Hao approached, people continuously came up to inquire whether they needed any special services, with some even suggesting they had both men and women available.
Although people backed off after receiving a glare from Lu Hao, there were still some scantily clad women who came up to inquire persistently.
Lu Hao looked towards Su Jin with a pale face, only to see that she appeared calm and collected facing these people.
“In the apocalypse, this is very normal. Everyone chooses their own way of survival; they are willing to bear the consequences of their choices, so I’m not particularly repulsed by them,”
Su Jin explained helplessly.
In her past life, she had seen a beautiful girl who provided services night and day, just to earn some bread and biscuits to feed her younger brother. There were too many such stories, and she found she couldn’t despise these people. On the contrary, in a way, these girls were great, deserving of care, just born in the wrong times.
Having heard this, Lu Hao also found peace. Yes, his little wife sometimes seemed cold-blooded, yet at other times her tenderness was astonishing, a truly unpredictable combination of contradictions.
However, this contradictory being was definitely making him fall deeper for her.
