Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 265: ConscriptionIn the S City base, a group of people in the meeting room watched a few minutes of video on the big screen in silence.
The footage was captured by a drone, and although it was only in the air for a few minutes before a Wind Element Mutated Zombie shot it down, the scenes it recorded still gave those in the room a clear picture of the current situation inside S City.
Today, Liang Jiuhui had dispatched two teams, composed of twenty Guard Squad members and Space Element Ability Users respectively, to scavenge for supplies, but only two survivors returned, both gravely injured and currently lying in the Base Hospital.
Before slipping into unconsciousness, the two recalled an encounter with a horde of zombies near the western part of the city, consisting of three to four hundred individuals, with over a hundred being Mutated Zombies.
Upon recognizing the dire situation, they didn’t engage in battle but quickly drove off. However, the Mutated Zombies relentlessly pursued them, with Guard Squad members sacrificing themselves to delay and resist the onslaught. In the end, only those two Space Element Ability Users made it back, because their space contained some of the supplies they had scavenged today…
The two Space Element Ability Users were on the verge of tears as they recounted the events, and even those beside them like Xu Mingzhi and Lin Tianhui couldn’t help but shed tears.
...After hearing the story, Lin Tianhui grew anxious about the family members who had gone out today. She took a moment to step away to use the restroom, entered her space, and after asking Li Xiuying and Lin Yunguo, she felt slightly relieved.
It turned out Qiqi and Tianzhen had already informed the elders about the situation outside when they had gone to rest. Qiqi had only experienced some adverse reactions due to overexertion of her Special Ability while trying to save Tianzhen. After resting in the space for a bit, they had recovered, and no one else was injured.
Lin Tianhui felt somewhat relieved after learning this. However, it was also the first time her family had encountered such danger during an outing. If Qiqi hadn’t used her Special Ability at the critical moment, her little sister…
Lin Tianhui dared not think further. It seemed that the outside world had indeed become very dangerous.
Not daring to stay in the space for too long, Lin Tianhui spoke briefly with the elders before leaving. She had already used her Healing Element Ability to heal the wounds of the two Space Element Ability Users, but as for the emotional trauma they had suffered, it would take time for them to heal on their own…
Liang Jiuhui left the hospital in a hurry after obtaining the drone footage, and he watched the scenes in the video over and over again in the meeting room.
In the city of S, aside from the unrecognizable streets and the devastated high-rise buildings, the ground was densely packed with zombies, and it seemed that Mutated Zombies accounted for a third of the Ordinary Zombies!
Was it because of that rain?
Liang Jiuhui frowned and watched the video again from start to finish, noting that some of the obstacles they had risked their lives to seal off at street corners had been completely destroyed, with large numbers of zombies pouring out from those exits…
If this continued, the west of the city would truly be in danger!
Liang Jiuhui quickly convened an emergency meeting with the base’s management to discuss the situation. With S City having a regular population of over 25 million, subtracting the deaths over the past two months of the Apocalypse and the current number of survivors, there were at least 15 million zombies left!
And this was a conservative estimate. Aside from the regular population, it was possible that the number of remaining zombies would far exceed this figure!
Everyone present was shocked, and even Jia Kaiji felt his scalp tingle upon hearing this.
“But with our current military and manpower, going up against these zombie armies, defeat is certain!” said an older voice.
“Uncle Ding is right, which is why I called everyone here to discuss strategies. I want to hear everyone’s opinions,”
Liang Jiuhui took in the expressions of everyone seated at the lower end of the table.
“I think we can mainly focus on recruiting and training new recruits, while encouraging Survivors to join the fight as a secondary measure,”
said Ye Rongxin, who was sitting at the very back. He was a newcomer brought up by Liang Jiuhui himself, and was of a similar age. He was now in charge of the Base’s Security team.
“Hmph, easier said than done. With so many Survivors, how do we mobilize them?” Jia Kaiji sneered at his suggestion.
The people present were already accustomed to Jia Kaiji’s contradiction. Ye Rongxin was a promising young man who had always been entrusted with important tasks by Liang Jiuhui, whereas Jia Kaiji was just one of Ye Rongxin’s subordinates, so his reluctance was somewhat inevitable.
Ye Rongxin didn’t retort to Jia Kaiji’s comment but continued to write something in his notebook.
However, after hearing Ye Rongxin’s words, Liang Jiuhui nodded in agreement. This coincided with his own thoughts, and coupled with what he had seen and heard the previous night in the shantytown, he believed that the key to solving the crisis in City S lay in the Survivors within the base.
So, when Su Jin and others returned to the base that day, they found that the base had already become abuzz.
Liang Jiuqing explained with a smile that the base was now encouraging Survivors to form their own teams. A team should have no fewer than eight members and no more than fifty. Once a team was formed, it could register at the Mission Center. Successful registration would result in a Crystal Core reward based on team numbers.
Moreover, the Base’s Mission Center, as the name suggests, was the place where various base missions were posted. Each team could take on missions from the base according to their own circumstances, and upon completing them, they would receive not only base points but also a corresponding reward of Crystal Cores.
This was an indirect way of encouraging everyone to go out and slay Zombies!
So, if they went out to kill Zombies now, not only would the Crystal Cores they collected be their own team’s, but they could also return for rewards?
This news got all the Survivors in the base stirring with excitement.
Besides this news, the base had now even started conscription! If one passed the conscription exams, not only would they get room and board within the base, but they would also receive a monthly salary!
Although forming one’s own team might sound more liberating and one could gather Crystal Cores for themselves, the risk involved was significantly high. Not to mention the necessity of spending money for food and accommodation in the base, the share of Crystal Cores each team member ended up with when divided amongst the group was often not much at all.
On the other hand, passing the conscription exam would secure a safe job and a fixed residence, and the monthly salary was also rather substantial. So, both options had their pros and cons, and it was up to everyone to decide freely.
However, the most critical point was that the conscription exams did not discriminate between men and women; those who passed would receive professional training organized by the base’s specialists.
Remembering the various Special Ability lectures previously arranged by the base, everyone felt they had benefited greatly from those sessions, not to mention what professional training could offer. This was the most attractive point for Survivors who wanted to improve their Special Abilities and skills.
Deng Shuwei unexpectedly received a conscription form in the shantytown. She held the form in surprise, wondering why someone from the base would specially deliver it to her. Could it be that every person in the shantytown received one?
Out of curiosity, she went out to inquire and found out this was not the case. Those who received the form were people who had participated in the battle in the shantytown the night before.
This couldn’t help but move Deng Shuwei; the current Base Leader had seen and acknowledged their efforts!
