Reincarnated as a Son of the Sword Saint and the Sage
Chapter 267 Cure To The White Death
Tuberculosis, also known as the White Death, was dubbed incurable until the 20th century. The treatment for the White Death was eradicating all the bacteria that cause the disease with antibiotics.
When it comes to completely erasing a mass population, the DeathDeathmonger of my Ultra Skill: Ruler of Death alone or the Unique Skill: Discriminator were more than enough to do the task. With just a snap of my fingers, viola, all the bacteria were gone, and the patient eventually recovered.
But I was not foolish enough to use my cards just to heal a single person from the disease. If I did and the words of my miraculous healing spread out, a person with an incurable disease would definitely crash our place and beg for it.
That was why I did not propose that idea in the first place. It would gather attention not only from the people but also from the church. I did not want to be hailed as a messiah or something that would end up with paganism.
So in the context of using Gabrielle's friend's scientific method of treating the White Death, I explained to everyone how to treat the disease as I was holding the paper. Also, I was making sure to explain why the treatment would take six months or longer.
The antibiotics for the disease were something I had to explain where they came from. Well, I just said that Gabrielle's friend gave some to me in case someone was infected, which they somehow believed.
Thud.
After several minutes, my long explanation and lecture came to an end once I placed the last bottle on the coffee table.
"That's what he instructed me to do when someone caught the White Death. This summarizes the method of treating the disease without entirely relying on magic, though magic can still be used for the improvement of the patient's body throughout the long treatment."
"Wow, Raphael... The way you explain it is as if you are the one who discovered the solution."
"No, Sis. I will credit it all to him. I just have a good memory, that's all."
I probably elaborated on it so well that Big Sis was a bit suspicious of it. I should be more careful the next time I have to introduce something otherworldly.
"Young Lord... if I follow your prescription, will my mother recover?"
After staring at the bottles for some time, Riley looked up and carefully asked me. She just heard something hard to believe, such as curing an incurable illness, so she just needed confirmation to relieve herself.
"If she actively takes her medicine on time and does not miss a dosage, she will eventually be recovered. Also, please take note that even if she seems recovered, the disease still inhabits her body and she will fall sick again. She must take her medicine for months until the disease completely dies."
"I understand, Young Lord."
"One more thing, the White Death is a contagious disease through air. So make sure that your mother is quarantined and isolated. And when you want to visit her, remember to equip yourself as well as the visitors with face masks so that you won't be able to inhale the disease."
"I never thought that an incurable disease such as the White Death could actually be treated," Riley pondered. "For such a way to save my mother, may the Goddess bless the Young Lord. Thank you for saving my mother."
After that, Riley stood up from her seat to take a deep bow.
"Well, it was actually Gabrielle's friend who discovered it. I am just spreading his words to help the needy."
(But he is actually me, though.)
With that, the problem of Riley had been solved, probably. But after solving the problem, there was still a problem Riley had to take care of.
"Young Lord," Riley said, sitting back. "I am very grateful for lending an ear and giving a hand to a mere servant such as myself, but I am afraid that I could not pay the favor I just owed."
That's it—the payment. I just provided her with a great solution for her problem, but everything comes with a price. Financially, she was not that stable, so she probably could not pay me back with money. So what could a maid like her do in this situation?
(A maid? Wait a minute...)
"Actually, the Raevender family has another property other than this manor and our home, though it is not formally stated in our net worth. That property has some people residing in it, but not everyone can do chores full time. So that is why I want you to be the first servant of the said property."
"Young Lord..."
The mansion on the 103rd floor of the Raevender Dungeon indeed had no servant to tend the place. My clones had been taking care of the mansion, but they were not always available, so reliable and capable people were needed to maintain the property.
I had started looking for some people to work for the underground mansion since the former members of the disbanded Myriad Wings would start adventuring once spring came. Right now, a very capable person owes me a favor, so why not seize this opportunity to take her?
"Hey, Raphael, do you intend her to work there?"
"Yes, Sis. Do you have any objections?"
"Well, no. Riley is a capable person, as well as a good person. So I think she is worthy enough to work on that place. But I have a few reminders." Big Sis then turned to Riley. "If you accept this offer, you won't be able to get out of that place without our permission, do you understand?"
"Aah... Y-yes, Young Lady...! I understand." Riley trepidated. "I owed a big favor to Young Lord Raphael, so I will do anything for him!"
"I have something to add," I added. "That property is an exclusive place, so you have to keep its existence a secret. And if you said you do anything, right?"
"Yes, Young Lord."
"All the residents there practically live long, including us. To become a servant there, I want you to gain a long life as Mary already did. Let say I have a way to bestow you that; do you still want to work there for me?"
Riley gaped when she heard the name of Mary and took a glance at her, to which Mary responded with a nod. She then looked back at me and thought for a while before she replied.
"...Yes, I have decided to devote my whole life to serving you... Even if I have to see my loved ones fade..."
That was unexpected. I did not expect her to agree with the conditions that we set for her. She even accepted the curse of immortality just to prove herself. If she was this determined, there was no way I could not hire her.
"Very well. When you start working there, we will double your wage."
"Thank you so much, Young Lord, Young Lady! I will never forget your kindness!"
Riley got up and started bowing before us again. Big Sis then raised her right hand, which stopped Riley before she uttered her sentence.
"By the way, you said that you are ready to sell your body in the red light district, aren't you?"
