Chapter 1714 Imperial Army
“Fight them?” the woman felt exasperated at the comment. “You can’t fight them. They are soldiers.”
“She’s right,” the leader said. “There is no fighting here against so many of them. And if I’m not wrong, at least one of them is a Overtaker. We do not know what sort of powers they have.”
“It has something to do with hearing, I think,” the woman said. “When that man was around me, I was suddenly deaf. I don’t know if that is the extent of his powers.”
“Not to mention, there could be more than one person with power,” the leader said. “We’ll be in trouble if we take on the fight.”
Ning thought for a moment and nodded. “I suppose you are right. But what do you suggest we do?” “Run,” the woman said. “We need to run away right now. Get your horses and—”
“We have no horses,” the leader said quickly, cutting her off. “All we have are these two carts and I don’t believe they are that useful in taking us anywhere.”
The woman’s eyes widened in shock. “Then we run on foot?” she asked.
“That’s not possible either,” the man said. “We can’t leave behind the only food we have, and spirits can easily search us in the forest anyway. We will be in the same situation as you were just earlier.”
The woman frowned.
“So…” Ning said. “We fight?”
The leader grimaced. “Let’s see if we can negotiate first. I would rather not fight if it can be forced.”
“Of course,” Ning said and got off the cart. “Let’s go meet them.”
The leader nodded. “Let’s go.”
They walked out of the forest, slowly making their way toward the bushes in the distance behind which their soldiers were hiding.
Ning walked even beyond that, watching the people arrive in the distance.
Just as the leader had said, there were 2 dozen or so people coming, all on horseback. There were no carriages as it seemed the soldiers had come without preparation.
Their horses seemed well-fed and rested, so they hadn’t forced the horses a lot either. They all seemed to be in a rather fit state, wearing thick metal armor.
Ning waited for the group to arrive before him and one by one they got off the horses. One man lifted his helm, revealing a jaded man in his 30s, with long blonde hair flowing behind him.
He looked quite handsome, and a little snobby by the looks of it.
“Who are you?” the man asked, his tone demanding for immediate answer.
“Just someone,” Ning said. “Who are you?”
“I am an officer of the Imperial Army, the leader of this group. You will hand over the woman you are harboring,” the man said.
“Sure. As long as you tell us what her crime is,” Ning said.
“You do not get to make the demands here,” the man said. “Hand her over or I will capture you all for obstructing justice.”
Ning grinned a little, leaning on his upright spear. “So I assume you don’t want to answer frankly. I guess there is no conversation to be had anymore. There is nothing for you here. Leave.”
“You have no authority to make me leave,” the man said, pulling out a sword. The others behind him pulled out swords and spears just the same.
Ning got ready for a fight when something flashed from the corner of his eyes. He saw something white float next to the man. When he focused on it, he could see a Spirit there and hear its words.
“There are bald men next to the woman behind there,” the spirit told the man. “I think those are the prisoners that they talked about that had run away here.”
Ning’s eyes narrowed. He had been wondering if they would recognize them, and it seemed the spirit had.
“Prisoners?” the enemy leader asked out loud. “Fugitives. Then we have more than just one person to capture. Kill anyone who refuses to get captured.”
[Ding!]
[You have received a Quest]
[Quest: Survive and Protect
The Imperial soldiers wish to kill the escaped prisoners. Save the prisoners from being killed. Reward: 2 Points for each soldier saved.]
Ning was a little surprised at the newly given quest. He didn’t expect there to be points based on how many he could save. He would have expected it to be an all-or-nothing.
“Guys, there’s no negotiation happening here,” Ning said out loud. “You should get ready for the fight.”
He prepared his spear and got ready to fight, waiting for an answer, but it never came at all. “Guys?” he said again, only to find he couldn’t hear his own words at all.
In fact, he couldn’t hear anything.
“Oh.”
The many soldiers pulled out their swords as they got ready to capture everyone there. Ning watched the men spreading out as some moved toward him. He got ready with his spear while the others charged at him with a sword.
The lack of sound made everything feel so weird. He could feel the vibrations when his spear struck the side of the sword, but there was no sound accompanying it. He parried the first slash, diverting it toward the right where it got stuck to the ground. He pushed his spear into the ground with the same motion and used it to force himself into the air before smashing his leg into the chest of the first soldier.
The armor the man wore caved into his chest as he was sent flying backward.
Ning pulled the spear out and spun it once to gain enough momentum to slam it onto the side of the other soldier’s skull. His helm helped him protect his skull, but he was still concussed rather badly.
Ning moved backward before the third attacker could come for him and pulled the sword on the ground back with him. He picked it up quickly with the other arm and threw it backward without looking.
