Reincarnated as an Energy with a System
Chapter 1750 1750: Close to the PassThe faster speed of travel was immediately noticeable. Wind and light rain beat at him much harder than before, as if they wanted to push him off the undead’s shoulders.
When the lightning occasionally flashed, Ning could see the sight of the trees moving in the distance. With that, he could see that it was much faster.
Alongside that, Ning also felt a noticeable lack of sound compared to before. What was once a constant jumble of noise was now more of a droning sound.
The flatness of the running surface seemed to help with the sound as well. Maybe that would help the people sleep better.
That was unlikely, although it should help with the constant bobbing of the carriages. There shouldn’t be more movement there anymore.
‘Damn, is it cold out here?’ Ning thought, feeling the cold rain patter against him. He quickly looked for the carriage when the sky grew bright one of the times and made his way inside.
Shara was still sleeping, so at least no one had hopefully been woken up by the change in the running pattern of the soldiers.
Ning lay down where his bed was in the carriage and wondered how long the mole could keep doing this. He was thankful to begin with that the mole hadn’t taken his energy and was instead using up its own energy.
That would mean there had to be a limit to how much it had in it, and that would most likely have something to do with the threshold of damage it could take before it was destroyed. When they did reach that threshold and were gone, it took them a week to come back.
So Ning would be stuck with using the other 11 beasts. He was more than glad to do so. For now, this would be his test to see how long the mole could last while doing what it was told to do.
Ning tried staying up to see the end of the mole’s journey. He knew he had to stay up to measure what he needed to, and yet the uniform rocking of the carriage was no different from a lullaby for him, constantly putting him to sleep.
When Ning woke next, his mind immediately alerted him of what he had been doing when he was falling asleep. ‘No,’ he thought, quickly getting up. He looked at his wrist, at the Summoner’s Bracelet, and was surprised to see that it was still active.
The mole was still doing as it was told.
‘What time is it?’ he wondered. The soft light coming from the window let him know that it was close to morning, if not already.
He looked out and saw that the rain had stopped at some point, with the clouds beginning to clear with a purple hue to them.
‘Early morning,’ Ning thought. ‘So over 6 hours already.’
He was surprised the mole could keep going for so long. He was sure it would have run out of energy much earlier than this. Maybe he underestimated the beast.
‘Let’s see how much more it can continue,’ Ning thought.
12 hours.
The answer was 12 hours.
Ning had put it to work right before midnight, and somehow the beast had continued doing what it did until midday.
Upon Ning’s suggestion, Romus didn’t stop his undead and let them travel for as long as they could while Ning did his tests. Romus wasn’t sure what Ning was doing, but he trusted Ning enough to do as he said in this instance.
Once the beast finally died, Ning let Romus know that he could stop anywhere he wanted to.
Romus could tell something had changed as well. The uniform rhythms that carried the running of the soldiers had changed, their bodies uneven during their runs. He could only wonder what it was, as Ning didn’t tell him the truth.
Everyone was hungry, so they quickly set up a place to eat. They cooked more than they could finish since they didn’t want to stop again and would rather eat their food in their carriages.
Now, even the regular soldiers had carriages that the undead carried above them.
Ning wanted to check the flat land his mole had left behind, but it was so far back that he would only be wasting everyone’s time.
“Do you guys recognize the place by any chance?” Ning asked Matthew and Romus. “How close are we?”
Matthew looked around for a moment and ran. His speed, stolen from all the willing 8,000 powerful undead soldiers, made him so quick that he could reach the peak of a nearby hill within seconds.
Sadly, while his speed did improve, his perception of time didn’t, making him unable to run at his full speed, lest he fall somewhere and kill himself with the speed he ran at.
Still, he made it to the top of the hill — which would’ve taken a regular person about 20 minutes to climb — in less than a minute and ran back down.
“The mountain range still goes on for a while, so we aren’t close. If I had to guess, we will reach Largan’s Pass in about 3 more days,” he said. “But we’ll need to be careful. The scouts should be watching this pathway. They will lay ambush if we charge in without stopping.”
Romus nodded. “What do we do then?” he asked.
Matthew thought for a moment. “We need to send a scout of our own,” he said. “How controllable are your undead without you?”
“Not possible,” Romus said. “They only follow what I say. If I’m not there to order, they’ll keep running away.”
Matthew frowned, not knowing what else he could do.
“I… might have an idea,” Ning said. “These soldiers are smart enough to listen to multiple of your commands and follow them without mistake, right?”
Romus nodded. “They’re the best of the bunch. They are great at handling multiple commands. Those commands just have to be simple and not overtly complicated.”
Ning smiled. “Then I might have a way.”
