Springtime Farming: A Happy Wife At Home

Chapter 2028: Fighting for the Position

Chapter 2028: Fighting for the Position

The tension in the air thickened with each passing moment, the scent of gunpowder growing more potent by the minute. It was on the brink of eruption!

All parties involved understood that mere verbal sparring would not yield any resolution. Eventually, violence would ensue, resulting in senseless bloodshed.

Finally, the dreaded day arrived…

The battle that unfolded within the Imperial City was nothing short of tragic. Civilians barricaded themselves indoors, quivering with fear. Shops and eateries remained shuttered, too afraid to open their doors. Countless soldiers raced through the sprawling streets, the clang of weapons and the cries of combatants sending shivers down everyone’s spine throughout the night.

The risk of fire was ever-present, with flames sporadically lighting up the sky in various parts of the city!

People scrambled to flee the Imperial City. Those with nowhere to go cowered at home, praying for divine intervention.

Time seemed to stretch on endlessly.

As news of the Crown Prince’s demise and the Emperor’s passing spread, the populace erupted into chaos. Teahouses, wine shops, and streets alike buzzed with fervent discussions and heated debates.

Everyone held strong opinions about the state of affairs. Some threw their support behind one prince, while others argued vehemently for another.

But as the turmoil dragged on, such debates lost their significance. They ceased to matter to anyone.

Even the scholars, usually eager to dissect matters of governance and steer the nation, found themselves devoid of such contemplations.

All were consumed by a singular thought: Let’s bring this to an end, swiftly!

As long as peace returned, the identity of the successor seemed inconsequential. All they wished for was the swift settling of dust and the restoration of tranquility.

This torment and fear persisted for seven long days and nights.

Finally, after a week, a temporary resolution emerged.

Temporary because there was no clear victor.

The Fourth Prince and Honored Princess Mei claimed a partial victory within the Imperial City, yet the Sun Family absconded with Princess Concubine Virtue and the Second Prince, fleeing the city’s confines.

Before departing, Princess Concubine Virtue ignited a massive blaze within the court. General Sun, in a ruthless maneuver, ordered arson near the city gates, leaving behind a trail of sabotage and potential assassinations.

Caught in the wake of the Sun Family’s brutality, the Fourth Prince and Honored Princess Mei found themselves in dire straits. Amidst their panic, the Third Prince led a band of loyalists out of the Imperial City.

But Empress Qi chose to remain, sacrificing her safety to serve as a diversion.

Honored Princess Mei and the Fourth Prince remained oblivious to the Third Prince’s escape, a consequence of Empress Qi’s cunning. By the time they caught wind of it, he had already put considerable distance between them.

Fearing a potential trap, the Fourth Prince hesitated to dispatch pursuers.

Nevertheless, Empress Qi remained within their grasp.

As for the Second Prince and Princess Concubine Virtue, lacking the legitimacy of the queen or rightful heir, they held little sway. Once the dust settled, troops could be deployed to quash any rebellion they might foment.

Similarly, Princess Consort’s family fell under the Fourth Prince’s control.

With the Crown Prince’s demise, the East Palace became untenable for them.

Consequently, the Fourth Prince ordered Princess Consort and her kin relocated to the northern palace compound.

Tragically, all three of the Crown Prince’s sons, including the eldest grandson, perished in the prior skirmishes.

Only a handful of Crown Prince’s grandsons survived, deemed inconsequential and thus spared.

Devastated, Princess Consort capitulated.

Initially resistant to vacate the East Palace, she ultimately lacked the resolve to end her life alongside her family.
