Chapter 2092: Definitely Up to No GoodChapter 2092: Definitely Up to No Good
Shao Yunduan’s sneer betrayed his skepticism toward Grandmaster Miao’s intentions. It was clear to him that they had not arrived with goodwill in mind.
Grandmaster Miao’s scrutinizing gaze seemed to acknowledge this fact, as if she harbored no desire to conceal her true motives from him.
Given the brazen rudeness displayed by the bailiffs, it was evident that Grandmaster Miao’s actions bore tacit approval from Prefect Liu.
Although Grandmaster Miao ostensibly represented Prefect Liu, Shao Yunduan had never crossed paths with the Prefect. In the two years since assuming his role in Anze Province, the magistrate’s office had shown no interest in the region. Despite Shao Yunduan’s attempts at reaching out, they remained aloof, granting him full autonomy over Anze Province.
Recognizing Prefect Liu’s deliberate avoidance, Shao Yunduan ceased his efforts to establish contact.
As the conflict between the three princes escalated, factions across the realm seized the opportunity to sow discord and chaos. Officials everywhere were consumed by fear and uncertainty, preoccupied with their own survival and unable to spare attention for anything beyond their immediate concerns.
As Prefect Liu’s emissary arrived unexpectedly, Shao Yunduan and his companions were compelled to set aside their ponderings.
“What do you make of Grandmaster Miao’s visit?” Shao Yunduan inquired.
“He’s undoubtedly up to no good!” Jia Heming’s disdain for the Prefect and the magistrate’s office was palpable. Even without prompting, he was eager to voice his concerns.
“In the past, Prefect Liu never spared Anze Province a second glance. But now, with this sudden influx of bailiffs, it’s evident that trouble is brewing. My Lord, forgive me if I speak out of turn, but it appears Prefect Liu aims to seize control of Anze Province. Given his lack of rapport with you, it’s uncertain how he’ll treat you. You must be vigilant,” Jia Heming cautioned earnestly.
“We all hold you in high esteem and are prepared to stand by your side. But if your fortunes take a turn for the worse, we may not fare well either.”
“If this were in the past, even if you were transferred, I’d willingly resign and accompany you. It would be of little consequence. But now…” Jia Heming’s voice trailed off, laden with implications.
Currently, no one could be separated from Shao Yunduan, not even by the princes themselves. However, if Prefect Liu, his direct superior, harbored ill intentions, he could easily fabricate a pretext for his removal. Such was the precarious nature of county officials.
In such a scenario, Shao Yunduan wouldn’t even have the opportunity to seek redress.
His heart heavy with apprehension, Shao Yunduan realized that his fears upon seeing Grandmaster Miao were not unfounded.
Jia Heming’s resolute words only served to confirm his suspicions.
“Tell me, how should we handle this situation?” Shao Yunduan asked, seeking guidance.
With resolute determination, Jia Heming affirmed, “We cannot yield control of Anze Province to Prefect Liu. No matter his demands, we cannot concede. Myself and the others stand firmly by your side, My Lord. You have our unwavering support! If Prefect Liu persists, we must be prepared to resist, using any means necessary. Regardless of your decision, Prefect Liu must not be allowed to interfere in the affairs of Anze Province.”
“In that case, we cannot afford to be lenient with these envoys. Otherwise, they’ll only become emboldened!” declared Shao Yunduan.
Acknowledging the sentiment, Shao Yunduan nodded. “Very well. Instruct them to abide by the standard protocols at the inn, and make arrangements for additional lodgings if necessary. However, given Anze Province’s limited resources, we can only provide basic accommodations. If they find this unsatisfactory, they are free to seek alternative arrangements.”
