As I climbed up the stairs, the noises from the room where Chii, An-rin, and Kushii were waiting grew louder. It was a mix of giggles and playful bickering that echoed down the hallway.
The door to the room was slightly ajar, letting a sliver of warm light spill out, along with the fruity scent of An-rin’s room’s air freshener.
I paused for a moment as my hand hovered over the doorknob, taking in the lively chaos that awaited me.
It was hard to believe how this night had unfolded, from a simple sleepover to… well, whatever this was now.
I pushed the door open, and the scene before me was as chaotic as expected.
They didn’t need me lifting An-rin’s bed anymore. They did it themselves and set up the futon occupying most of the room.
An-rin was sprawled across it, her oversized t-shirt rolled up slightly as she waved a pillow threateningly at Kushii, who was sitting on the edge, clutching another pillow like a shield.
Meanwhile, Chii was leaning against the wall, her phone in hand, scrolling through something with a lazy grin, clearly enjoying the show. Most likely, she’s also updating the other girls about what’s happening here.
If my guess was correct, it should be Hana and Hifumi wondering how it went for us
“Oi, Onoda-han!” An-rin’s head snapped up the moment I stepped in, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. “Took you long enough! What, were you downstairs plotting more perv lord schemes or something?”
With a grin tugging at my lips, I raised my hands in surrender. “Schemes? Nah, I’m just checking in with the other girls. Gotta make sure they don’t think I’ve forgotten them while I’m stuck here with you chaotic gremlin.”
“This playboy! Like, you’re not even denying it anymore!” An-rin threw the pillow at me.
Meanwhile, Kushii giggled as she lowered her pillow slightly, her loose tank top shifting as she moved. “Onoda-shi, you’re, like, always juggling so many girls. Are they not going to be mad at you for this?”
Chii snorted, not looking up from her phone. “They won’t, Kushii. But that’s why he’ll always be in trouble. He has to make it up to them. Right, Kii?”
I shot her a playful glare, dropping our bags that I proposed to carry earlier by the door and kicking the door closed.
“Trouble? Me? I’m the picture of innocence, Chii. If anything, An-rin is the one who started this whole mess tonight.”
After saying that, I put on a playful smirk as I gave the girl a side glance.
An-rin gasped dramatically, clutching her pillow to her chest like a scandalized maiden. “Excuse me?! Chizuru’s the mastermind, not me! I was just, like, minding my own business. And then you two dragged me into your… your perv fest!”
Kushii burst out laughing, nearly dropping her pillow. “Stop, An-rin, You were, like, totally melting when Onoda-shi had his hands on you. Don’t act all innocent now! Embrace it!”
An-rin’s face flared red, and she hurled another pillow at Kushii, who dodged it with a squeal. “Shut it, Kushii! You’re the one who was all ‘oh, Onoda-shi, you’re so dreamy’ down there! Don’t think I didn’t notice!”
I flopped onto the futon next to Chii, letting the chaos unfold as I leaned my head against her shoulder. “You two are gonna wake the neighbors with all this yelling. Can’t we just, I don’t know, maybe chill for five minutes?”
Glancing at her phone, it was really opened with the group chat between them. I even saw Hifumi’s latest message saying, “How enviable. I’ll get that guy next time. I’ll lock him in my room to help me with my studies. After that, we…”
I failed to finish reading the message because Chii set her phone down. Looking up, I saw her smirking at me as she nudged my shoulder.
I got caught, huh?
“Kii, why is Hifumi complaining to me? What did you tell her?”
“Hmm? Nothing. I just teased her. But really, I’m glad to see you three getting close again.”
“Hmph. Who do you think is responsible for it?”
“Me?”
“Who else, idiot Kii? Anyway, you better prepare yourself for them. They’re jealous. They want the same treatment.”
“Don’t worry. I’m not planning on neglecting them.” As I said that, I put on a silly smile that earned me a pinch on my cheek.
An-rin and Kushii were still bickering, their voices a lively mix of mock indignation and laughter, but they paused when they caught Chii pinching my cheek. An-rin’s eyes narrowed, her chaotic gremlin energy flaring up as she pointed an accusing finger at me.
“Oi, Onoda-han! There you go again, cozying up with Chizuru while we’re right here! You’re, like, totally playing favorites!” Her oversized t-shirt slipped further off her shoulder, but she didn’t bother fixing it, too caught up in her dramatic outburst.
Am I playing favorites? This girl… Is she already considering herself as one of my girls?
Kushii slid closer as she shook her head. I could see her loose tank top shifting slightly as she leaned forward. “An-rin, you’re just jealous ’cause you want more of Onoda-shi’s attention. Admit it, you liked it when he was all… handsy with you earlier.”
An-rin’s face turned a deeper shade of red, and she grabbed another pillow, lobbing it at Kushii with pinpoint accuracy. “Shut it, Kushii! Don’t act like you weren’t all over him too! I saw you, Miss ‘I’m so bold tonight’!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle at all this chaos. I mean, this situation wasn’t that bad.
“Ladies, ladies, there’s enough of me to go around. No need to fight. Or, you know, keep throwing pillows. This futon’s gonna look like a warzone soon.”
Chii snorted, nudging me with her elbow. “Kii, don’t encourage them. You’re already in deep enough with them. Don’t make them fall too hard for you.”
“Well, I don’t think I’ll have control over that. Anyway, Hifumi must be plotting her revenge for me getting swept up in tonight’s… festivities. Nothing I can’t handle. Besides, I told her I’m weak for beautiful friendships.”
As I said that, my eyes shifted to both An-rin and Kushii. The former groaned while the latter blushed.
“Ugh, Onoda-han, you’re, like, so gross with that smooth talk! ‘Beautiful friendships’? Pfft, you’re just fishing for more girls to join your perv palace, no? How did I get wrapped up in this?”
Kushii crawled over to sit closer, her knees tucked under her as she looked at me, “Onoda-shi, you’re, like, really good at this. Making everyone feel special. How do you even keep up with all of this?”
Her question was innocent, but there was a genuine curiosity behind it, maybe even a hint of admiration. I caught the way her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her tank top, a small sign of that lingering shyness despite her bold moments earlier.
I tilted my head, giving her a soft smile. “First of all, you know how shameless I am, Kushii. Besides, it’s not about keeping up. It’s about making sure everyone knows they matter. You, An-rin, Chii… you’re all important to me, in your own way. I don’t want anyone feeling left out or like they’re just a side character.”
Despite how cheesy that sounded, it was my honest thought.
Chii raised an eyebrow, “There’s that silver tongue again, Kii. Careful, you’re gonna make Kushii swoon and then An-rin’s gonna throw another pillow at you for stealing her thunder.”
“Hmph! I’m not swooning and I’m not throwing any more pillows! I’m, like, totally in control here, okay? Onoda-han’s not gonna charm me that easily!”
An-rin sat up with her eyes glinting with defiance. However, her flustered expression says a lot of what she’s truly feeling.
Kushii laughed and nudged An-rin’s shoulder before teasing her, “Sure, An-rin. That’s why you were all ‘do more, Onoda-han’ earlier. Totally in control.”
An-rin’s mouth dropped open and she grabbed a pillow, ready to launch it, but I reached out, catching her wrist gently. “Alright, chaotic gremlin, let’s call a truce. No more pillow wars. We’re supposed to be winding down, not starting a wrestling match.”
Her eyes met mine and that vulnerable look from earlier flashed across her face. She yanked her wrist back, but there was no real force behind it, and she muttered, “Fine, whatever. But don’t think you can just smooth-talk me, Onoda-han.”
I shook my head and let go of her hand before pulling Chii closer as she nestled against my side. Kushii scooted closer too, taking my free side.
Seeing that, An-rin didn’t move away, staying within arm’s reach on the futon despite her grumbling.
With this, the room settled into a comfortable silence. The futon was big enough for all four of us, but it felt like we were all gravitating toward each other, like planets orbiting a shared center.
Chii broke the silence, her voice low and teasing. “So, Kii, are we calling it a night? Or maybe you’re planning for a round two?”
