Chapter 1746: Chapter 1603: The Bloody Land of Heaven

Princess Jinrou maintained her vigilance, her perception extending across the surroundings.

Around the Heavenly Palace, black dots would often emerge out of nowhere, slowly expand, and then inexplicably vanish elsewhere.

Those were likely the patrolling strong ones of the Heavenly Palace, and the Soul Pets they commanded seemed to primarily consist of the Dragon Race.

As soon as they entered the Heavenly Palace, Rain Suo didn’t say a word. From the Soul Contract, Chu Mu could sense that her emotions were surging intensely, yet she was deliberately suppressing herself from expressing them.

They grew closer to the white city, and the guards became increasingly strict.

“Several areas near the city are guarded by powerful creatures. We need to enter the city from another place,” Princess Jinrou said.

“Follow me,” Rain Suo finally spoke.

Rain Suo led the two of them away from the front of the white Sky City, flying into a small, isolated town connected to the White City from the side.

This small white town was connected to the White City, but white city walls visibly separated and restricted passage between the two.

It was clear that the presence of strong ones here was slightly weaker.

The white jade-paved streets bore carvings of ancient patterns in green.

The buildings were also white, pristine as though forged from ice crystals.

There were no shops visible here, suggesting that no trade existed in this place.

Chu Mu didn’t see any plants here, either. Although the entire Sky City seemed enveloped in a special celestial spiritual aura, the lack of greenery still lent an unnatural feel, as if true nature was missing.

The white streets were almost devoid of pedestrians. It was unclear if the people here were staying inside the houses or gathered elsewhere.

“The lifestyle here isn’t much different from human cities. However, everyone born here undergoes unified strict training, and some remain in the Heavenly Palace as its guards while others are sent to the Mortal World to partially oversee the workings of the Human Clan,” Rain Suo explained without waiting for Chu Mu’s inevitable questions.

Chu Mu looked at her expressionless face and said, “Your emotions are unstable.”

Rain Suo pretended not to hear, continuing, “The ones living in this town are those who were eliminated. They failed to become guards of the Heavenly Palace, failed to enter the White City, and were not chosen as emissaries to the Human Clan. They were banished here to live.”

“There’s nothing here except houses—wouldn’t that make life here terribly mundane?” Princess Jinrou asked.

“Mundane?” Rain Suo found this word inaccurate and corrected, “They’re already dead.”

“Why say that?” Chu Mu asked.

“The time should be near. Let’s watch quietly,” Rain Suo replied.

Chu Mu looked into the distance and saw the red fire sun had disappeared, replaced by an entrancing silver full moon hanging in the sky.

The silver moonlight spilled over the white city, making the scene resemble the dreamlike Moon Palace from a painting.

While Chu Mu marveled at the moon’s extraordinary beauty, the silver moon gradually became shrouded in a thin veil of blood-red light. That veil turned the pristine moon hazy, and the light it cast down took on a sinister crimson hue.

“Rumble rumble rumble rumble~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~”

Suddenly, the ground and city began to tremble!

A wild and inexplicable gale swept in from outside the city, whipping through the white city relentlessly.

Soon, chillingly primal roars filled the air from afar, carrying a palpable sense of hunger and savagery.

Chu Mu and Princess Jinrou turned their gazes outward and saw that at some point, creatures with black flesh wings had begun appearing in the starry skies. Across the flat, green-black earth, a group of powerful beings raced toward the city with shooting-star speed. Below that hardened green rock, bizarrely-shaped creatures climbed out from pits and crevices, their crimson-red eyes gleaming with unmatched ferocity!

All of them surged toward the white city—more precisely, they all aimed for this isolated town separated from the city.

At that moment, the doors of the town’s houses suddenly opened. Chu Mu saw many people step out and gather on the streets.

Their aura was not weak, but Chu Mu couldn’t understand why, with those terrifying monsters barrelling toward the town, they weren’t summoning their Soul Pets to defend themselves.

Moreover, despite the city being home to so many strong ones, none of them appeared concerned about the monster attack, nor did they step in to defend the town.

Soon, the streets were packed with all the residents of the small town.

No one led them; they lined up and marched toward the city gates with eerie expressions.

According to Chu Mu’s understanding, the people of a city under monster attack should show fear or determination in their eyes, yet these residents’ gazes were disturbingly blank.

They clearly retained their own thoughts and appeared identical to normal humans. In fact, to Chu Mu, their average strength seemed exceptional within the Human Domain. But here, they resembled walking corpses, trudging slowly toward the city gates.

The gates opened, letting them into the outer area to face the incoming monsters.

Around three thousand people assembled; not one of them summoned a Soul Pet.

“Raaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

A rock-type monster, resembling both a centipede and a snake, suddenly burst from the green-black earth. Its terrifying maw engulfed a hundred people in a single bite, its surroundings drenched in splattered blood that rained down on the others.

By now, the crowd was finally panicking, scattering in all directions.

Humans who didn’t summon Soul Pets were exceedingly fragile. The monsters didn’t need to use any skills—simply their claws or fierce fangs were enough to shred their bodies or devour them whole.

Blood sprayed everywhere. Severed limbs, heads, and mangled corpses littered the ground, leaving behind human skeletons soon spit back out by the monsters.

The three thousand individuals who left the city’s protection were devoured in an instant, like livestock thrown into a herd of ferocious beasts.

The brutal carnage made Princess Jinrou shut her eyes, unable to continue watching.

Chu Mu stared at the scene in stunned silence, unable to comprehend why these thousands of people hadn’t resisted at all…

It felt as though they had willingly given their lives to feed the monsters. Even more shocking was that the Sky City’s guards standing on the towering city walls watched the massacre of their comrades indifferently, as though it was entirely insignificant.

Before long, the three thousand people were consumed, leaving pools of horrifying blood outside the city.

The monsters that had feasted on human flesh finally dimmed the ferocity in their eyes. Some still had strings of human entrails hanging from their mouths, seemingly satisfied, as they retreated to their nests.

The Heavenly Palace, with its fairyland-like purity—the white architecture, sacred celestial aura, and perfect silver moon—had seemed to Chu Mu like the epitome of mortal paradise. Yet, shortly after his arrival, he witnessed an unspeakably bloody, savage scene and couldn’t fathom why those people had surrendered themselves to be savaged by monsters.

“Why… why didn’t they fight, even if it’s futile? There are strong guards in Sky City; why didn’t they intervene to fight off the monsters?” Princess Jinrou asked, her voice simmering with anger.

“The moment they were deemed weak, they were already dead. Doesn’t your world also use livestock to feed ferocious beasts? It’s better not to think of them as humans,” Rain Suo replied.

Her expression remained blank, her gaze just as detached as those guards in Sky City, as though everything that unfolded had been entirely expected.

But no matter how much she tried to hide it, Chu Mu could feel the turmoil in her heart—anger, resentment, sorrow, despair!

Rain Suo seemed to notice Chu Mu probing her emotions and cast him a glare.

The Soul Contract between them allowed their more evident emotional fluctuations to be mutually felt, and Chu Mu wasn’t deliberately prying into her feelings…

“You actually care about those people?” Chu Mu said.

Rain Suo hated when he asked deeply personal questions that struck at her core. Her silver teeth clenched tightly, and she glared at Chu Mu fiercely: “So what if I care?”

“Why didn’t you save them?” Chu Mu pressed.

“Save them? This isn’t the Vast World. The only land humans can live on here is this unique Land of Heaven. Within the Land of Heaven, countless creatures as fierce as those monsters exist—impossible to kill them all or wipe them out completely. Their propagation speed and growth far outpace that of humans. Those born in Sky City undergo strict training from a young age and, if deemed weak, their lives lose all meaning. The sole contribution they can make to the Heavenly Palace and City is to use their flesh to feed the hungry monsters, preventing attacks on the city,” Rain Suo explained coldly.

Chu Mu remained silent.

Indeed, the Heavenly Palace was a completely enclosed realm. If monster threats constantly existed, the weak truly had no purpose. Even if they tried to escape, where could they go within the limited confines of the Land of Heaven?

“Have you ever done something for them before?” Chu Mu asked.

He had glimpsed fragmented memories of Rain Suo, some of which seemed to connect to what he was witnessing now.

Rain Suo’s violet eyes shifted with cold waves of light.

For anyone who wore a mask, their greatest fear was being seen through to their deepest core. Rain Suo, whose personality shifted between cold aloofness and the seductive recklessness of the Good and Evil Queen, shared that fear. No matter how she presented herself, her true inner self had always been singular—a part of her she detested others touching.

It was precisely Chu Mu who could see her unguarded and tightly concealed truths.

And this man was someone she utterly hated.

When she handed the Flower Pistil to Chu Mu, losing her leverage to regain her stature, Rain Suo had tried to interact peacefully with him…

But it was impossible—this man was so insufferable! After all the things she did for him, he still didn’t understand the sacred and inviolable boundaries of others’ privacy!
