Chapter 1532: Chapter 1630: Not Mistaken in Seeing

“Your father has gone to Xuan City with your cousin to deal with some matters, and your mother is at home. She has been missing you dearly over the years, you should go visit her earlier,” Dugu Fengyun said with a sigh.

Dugu Nian hmmed softly and then glanced at Fang Lin.

The two understood each other without a word and Fang Lin smiled, saying, “I’ll stay here to chat with the old master.”

“Grandfather, I will go visit my mother first,” Dugu Nian told Dugu Fengyun.

Dugu Fengyun waved his hand.

Dugu Nian temporarily left the courtyard to visit her mother, while Fang Lin sat in the courtyard, staring at Dugu Fengyun.

“Old master, why do you keep staring at me like that?” Fang Lin asked, feeling awkward and uncomfortable under Dugu Fengyun’s gaze.

Dugu Fengyun looked at Fang Lin with a sort of resentful expression and pouted, “It is said that a daughter can hardly be kept at home once she grows up. I didn’t believe it before, but now it seems my granddaughter’s mind is entirely occupied with you.”

Fang Lin chuckled, “The old master is joking. Over these years, she and I have been constantly on the move. She has often missed her family at home, but at that time, we couldn’t help it and were unable to leave our duties. I hope the old master can forgive us.”

Dugu Fengyun shook his head, “It doesn’t matter much whether that girl comes back or not, as long as she is safe and sound.”

While speaking, Dugu Fengyun again stared at Fang Lin with a peculiar look: “In all these years, have you and my granddaughter ever…?”

The words were not fully spoken, but how could Fang Lin not understand what the old master was asking?

Fang Lin replied modestly, “We have respected each other like guests, not overstepping any boundaries.”

Dugu Fengyun’s gaze turned even stranger, “Why do I find that so hard to believe?”

Fang Lin, feeling helpless, said, “It’s up to the old master whether to believe it or not.”

“Hahaha, since the two of you have come back together this time, why not just get married here and be done with it? It would spare her the years following you without any formal status,” Dugu Fengyun said in a tone that demanded attention.

Fang Lin didn’t expect the old master to suddenly bring this up, and he didn’t know how to respond.

As for getting married, Fang Lin really didn’t have this idea at the moment; after all, there were many more important things to do before them.

But that was just his own thought; as for what Dugu Nian thought, whether she was hoping to get married to Fang Lin sooner and become a true husband and wife, Fang Lin felt somewhat uncertain at this moment.

Seeing Fang Lin lost in thought and silent, Dugu Fengyun’s brows, which were a mixture of black and white, suddenly frowned, thinking that Fang Lin was unwilling to marry Dugu Nian.

“Fang Lin, I know you’re no longer the young man without strength or background that you used to be, but I have cherished my granddaughter for half a lifetime. If you dare to fail her, I will risk my life to have it out with you!” Dugu Fengyun said solemnly.

Fang Lin forced a smile, “You are overthinking, old master.”

“Then why don’t you react when I propose that you marry Nian’er?” Dugu Fengyun pressed.

Fang Lin explained, “To tell you the truth, this visit to the Dugu Family is a stolen moment amidst a busy schedule. We both are entangled in numerous matters, and as to when to get married, we also need to listen to her opinion. It’s not just up to us to decide.”

Dugu Fengyun nodded upon hearing this: “That makes sense. When she arrives later, I’ll ask her directly.”

But then Dugu Fengyun, with a pair of aged eyes, stared at Fang Lin and asked in a harsh tone: “Although it’s quite common for a man to have three wives and four concubines, you, young man, with your attractive face and outstanding talents, there must be a lot of women who look at you differently, right?”

Fang Lin understood what the old man meant and shook his head: “Apart from your granddaughter, I really have no interest in other women.”

Hearing this, Dugu Fengyun was elated, patting Fang Lin’s shoulders repeatedly, and then took out his treasured fine wine from the house to drink with Fang Lin.

In another room, Dugu Nian saw her mother Xu Xiuping, whom she hadn’t seen for many years.

“Mother, how come you have so many white hairs?” Dugu Nian, looking at her mother, was filled with a sense of guilt.

Although Xu Xiuping was only in her forties, her hair had turned significantly white, and her face looked much more worn than in Dugu Nian’s memory. Clearly, her mother had not had an easy life these years.

“It’s good that you’ve returned. Over the years, I’ve always wanted to find you but didn’t know where you were. All I could do was wait for the day you would come back to visit me,” Xu Xiuping said softly, embracing her daughter, tears streaming down her face.

Dugu Nian felt quite uncomfortable. Over the years, although she had been away and had been through a lot, she had thought about visiting her parents and grandfather at the Dugu Family, but she was always held back by various matters, especially after entering the Pill Pole Tower, where too much had happened, making it impossible for her to return to the Dugu Family.

Even before Dugu Nian returned to the Dugu Family, she had worried whether her parents were still alive? Whether her grandfather was still alive? After all, the war between the lands was extraordinary, and anyone could perish in such a conflict.

Fortunately, all the relatives she cared about the most were still alive, and that was enough for her.

“Nian’er, how have you been outside all these years? Have you been aggrieved?” Xu Xiuping looked at her daughter’s face, her voice trembling slightly.

Although Dugu Nian’s appearance had almost not changed compared to the past, only becoming less naive and more mature.

But as a mother, Xu Xiuping could still tell from a mother’s intuition that her daughter in front of her was very different from the past, with a completely changed expression between her brows.

“Mother, I’ve been very well these years. Don’t I look perfectly fine?” Dugu Nian would not tell her mother about the hardships she had experienced over the years. With a coy and charming smile, she seemed like the same innocent and slightly temperamental young lady from a wealthy family.

Xu Xiuping showed a smile. Although she had aged a lot, she was once known as a beauty in Xuan Country, or else, with Dugu Nian’s father’s ordinary looks, how could they have a daughter with such stunning beauty as Dugu Nian?

This was quite similar to Fang Lin, whose fathers were not particularly attractive, and in terms of appearance, they mostly inherited from their mothers.

“Mother, I came back with Fang Lin,” said Dugu Nian softly.

Upon hearing this, Xu Xiuping, as a woman and Dugu Nian’s mother, naturally had a deeper insight than old master Dugu Fengyun.

“How does he treat you?” Xu Xiuping didn’t care about how Fang Lin was. She was only worried that her daughter, by following Fang Lin, would not only lack happiness but instead suffer hardships and grievances. This was what she didn’t want to see.

Dugu Nian’s face was adorned with a smile, one that came from the heart, pure and genuine.

“He treats me better than he treats anyone else in the world,” Dugu Nian told her mother, the pride in her words evident.

Xu Xiuping nodded with a smile: “That’s good to hear. It seems neither you nor your grandfather has misjudged.”
