Chapter 1714: Chapter 1811: Pursuit

Fang Lin’s heart shook violently, as this demon beast bore a striking resemblance to the ancient Demon Tree—equally resilient in vitality, equally mysterious and powerful, capable of devouring the flesh and life essence of living beings. If not for their appearances being drastically different, Fang Lin would have almost suspected that this demon beast was the transformed Demon Tree.

Even though their appearances weren’t alike, Fang Lin still felt there might be some connection between the two. This was his intuition, as well as his conjecture.

“What’s wrong?” Nangong Shoujian and Zhong Wuwei looked at Fang Lin with confusion.

Fang Lin shook his head and recalled the words spoken by the mysterious man carrying an umbrella during his second appearance.

What had transpired once before was now destined to return again. In Fang Lin’s understanding, these words referred to the ancient catastrophe.

Now, the ancient Demon Tree had been awakened by members of the three sects. Currently, it hides within the depths of the sea, whereabouts unknown, but it would eventually resurface one day.

And here in the land of the Nine Countries, another powerful, mysterious demon beast of unknown origin had appeared. Was this merely a coincidence? Or was someone orchestrating all of this from behind the scenes?

Fang Lin couldn’t tell for sure. However, although the Nine Countries and the three sects seemed calm on the surface, it was likely that this facade of peace hid a storm far more terrifying than the previous wars between those two regions.

When the time comes, how many will perish? No one knows. And how many, if any, will survive? That is even harder to foresee.

“It’s nothing,” Fang Lin casually replied, waving his hand as he stowed away the eight Ancient Lamps of Flame God into his pouch.

At that moment, Fang Lin finally sensed a presence behind him, as if a pair of eyes had been silently watching him.

“Come out now!” Fang Lin roared, his killing intent immediately locking onto that eerie eyeball.

Zhong Wuwei and Nangong Shoujian were quick to react, both warily focusing their attention on the eyeball not far behind them.

“Who dares skulk about in the shadows? Are you too cowardly to show yourself?” Nangong Shoujian’s long swords all surged forward, seemingly ready to strike should the eyeball make any sudden move.

Zhong Wuwei was equally prepared, two Jade Plates appearing in his hands—one golden, the other silver. Radiating dazzling brilliance together, they formed a stunning display.

“It’s you again!” Fang Lin exclaimed. This was the third time he had encountered this eerie eyeball.

The first time was during a battle in the Extreme North Land, where Fang Lin had arrived in time with a True Dragon clone to rescue Dugu Nian from danger. He had briefly crossed paths with the person behind the eerie eyeball but failed to capture them.

The second time, the eyeball had appeared again during the challenge issued by Sealing Sword Pavilion to the Sky Swallowing Palace, stealthily observing from the shadows.

And now, Fang Lin saw this eerie eyeball for the third time. Its elusive and enigmatic nature had long fueled Fang Lin’s resolve to flush it out once and for all, though he’d never had the chance—until now.

Fang Lin exchanged a glance with the two men beside him. Though no words were spoken, both Zhong Wuwei and Nangong Shoujian understood his intentions—this time, they were determined to capture the eerie eyeball.

Knowing the eyeball’s ghostly ability to evade pursuit, Fang Lin acted first, conjuring a massive, sky-piercing hand to grasp at the eyeball.

The eyeball quickly retreated at great speed, about to escape the range of the colossal hand within the blink of an eye.

“You’re not getting away!” Nangong Shoujian unleashed his Bamboo Shadow Sword, slicing through the air with deadly sharpness, intercepting the eyeball’s escape route.

But the eyeball paid no heed and barreled straight toward Nangong Shoujian.

Startled and annoyed, Nangong Shoujian silently raged—this eyeball dared to ignore him, thinking him easy to overcome?

Without hesitation, Nangong Shoujian retaliated, the Bamboo Shadow Sword flashing toward the oncoming eyeball.

A loud clang echoed as the Bamboo Shadow Sword was sent flying back, shocking Nangong Shoujian.

In that instant, two beams of light flared—they came from Zhong Wuwei’s Gold and Silver Shields, which were now enveloping the eyeball under his full exertion.

The Gold and Silver Shields, rare ancient treasures, were flawlessly wielded by Zhong Wuwei to trap the eerie eyeball within their luminous glow.

Nangong Shoujian seized the opportunity, recalling Bamboo Shadow to his hand before pressing his finger against the blade.

With that strike, the Bamboo Shadow Sword unleashed its full destructive power—Nangong Shoujian’s ultimate attack.

Boom!!!

The sword’s intent wavered unpredictably, but its edge was sharp and unapologetically exposed.

The eyeball was struck by the Bamboo Shadow Sword, yet seemed unscathed. Instead, it managed to break free of the entrapment created by the Gold and Silver Shields.

“Step aside!” Fang Lin rushed forward, throwing a thunderous punch at the eerie eyeball with force unmatched.

The eyeball met Fang Lin’s punch head-on, staring at him without dodging, almost as if yearning for the confrontation.

Frowning slightly, Fang Lin sensed something peculiar about the eyeball but could no longer retract his fist. The strike connected.

Bang!

The punch landed on the eyeball, generating a muffled thud as the eyeball fell, seemingly heavily injured.

Fang Lin glanced at his fist, finding the sensation odd—it felt like punching into cotton, yet the sound was unlike anything soft.

The eyeball dropped straight down before abruptly transforming into a figure, speeding away toward the south.

Snorting coldly, Fang Lin told Nangong Shoujian and Zhong Wuwei to return to Sky Swallowing Palace while he alone pursued the mysterious figure.

The figure moved with incredible speed, far beyond the capability of ordinary Great Longevity cultivators. With each blink, it seemed to be a thousand miles away.

Fang Lin unleashed the Nine Heavens Step Skill, traversing the vast heavens as if they were flat lands, moving at a shocking speed.

The two tore through the sky, one leading, one chasing, separated by approximately a hundred miles—a gap that remained stubbornly unchanged.

The mysterious figure glanced back at Fang Lin several times. Though its face remained unclear, the eyes carried hints of amusement and disdain.

Snorting coldly, Fang Lin absorbed the eight Ancient Lamps of Flame God into his body, causing his cultivation to surge and his speed to soar. The distance between them continually shrank.

Ninety miles!

Eighty miles!

Seventy miles!

···

The chase continued endlessly, until only ten miles separated them. Fang Lin seemed on the verge of catching him.

Yet at that moment, a sense of looming danger filled Fang Lin’s heart.

The figure who’d been fleeing ahead suddenly vanished silently under Fang Lin’s watchful eyes.

“How is this possible?” Fang Lin stopped abruptly, activating his Heavenly Eye to scan the area within a thousand-mile radius, leaving no corner unchecked.

A soft, deceptively simple palm descended, and Fang Lin, filled with astonishment, turned just in time to glimpse a blurry figure before losing consciousness and plummeting downward.
