The Strongest Dull Prince’s Secret Battle for the Throne
Chapter 678: Betrayal and More BetrayalChapter 678: Betrayal and More Betrayal
"This way, Prince Rupert, Lady Gianna."
In the Imperial Sword Castle, Lynfia was in charge of guarding Rupert and his mother, the Seventh Consort Gianna.
Around them were members of the Narbe Ritter. Their mission was to assist in the escape of the most important individuals in the castle. Therefore they had divided into several squads and infiltrated the Imperial Sword Castle. Once they joined forces, it would be possible to break through with brute force.
Lynfia had this in mind, but when she saw the new arrivals appear before them, she clicked her tongue inwardly.
She recognized the person that was leading the newcomers.
A woman with blue hair and glasses. Despite her rational appearance, she gave off a snake-like impression to the others.
"Well, well, Gianna. And Prince Rupert."
Standing there was Erik's mother, the Third Consort Camilla.
Why is Erik's mother here?Puzzled, Lynfia drew her sword and prepared for battle. Camilla's guards were elites, way different from the pursuers they had faced so far.
"Don't be afraid. Let's escape together," Camilla said.
"Lady Camilla... how did you escape from the Consort Palace?" Gianna asked.
The Palace should have been surrounded and Camilla should have been there. Yet here she was, which didn't make sense. The Empress was holed up in the palace because there were no safe escape routes. Gianna was in Rupert's room and Mitsuba was in Fine's room so even if Camilla had been outside, getting here would have been impossible.
"I had Erik let me through. He said that the Consort Palace was dangerous… It's good to have a filial son," Camilla replied.
"So, you betrayed us?" Lynfia asked.
Camilla laughed softly and then opened her eyes wide.
"No, the traitors are you. You sided with the Chancellor and opposed Wilhelm and Erik. I didn't intend to capture you lot by myself, but I can't let Prince Rupert go. If you don't resist, I won't treat you badly."
At Camilla's words, her guards drew their swords. Lynfia scowled while realizing their bad luck. Camilla was evacuating from the palace and didn't intend to stop their escape. That was someone else's job and they just happened to cross paths.
What bad luck.
Camilla's guard was strong. Breaking through them would be tough.
"Please, get Prince Rupert and Lady Gianna out of here!"
"Capture them," Camilla ordered, and her guards advanced.
Lynfia changed her magic sword into a spear and spun it in her hands. Lynfia's magic sword could change its form. In its spear form, it emitted a sound that could put even powerful monsters to sleep.
However,
"Damn it!"
Yet the guards charged towards her without hesitation. It wasn't just a matter of strength and instead there must have been some mental enhancement.
Lynfia abandoned her initial plan and used the spear to hold off two of the guards. The Narbe Ritter also engaged their opponents but they couldn't overpower them.
If they were delayed, more enemies would arrive. Time was on the enemy's side.
Meanwhile, more reinforcements arrived behind Camilla.
"You're in the way, Mother Camilla."
This time it was a red-haired prince who arrived with a light demeanor and a frivolous smile. He was accompanied by several bodyguards.
"Conrad nii-sama..."
Seeing him, Rupert murmured.
Conrad smiled at Rupert.
"Rupert, I'm glad you're safe."
"You're late, Conrad. You chose this route, so you take command instead."
"I'm sorry, Mother Camilla. This route should have been clear but I wonder what went wrong."
Shrugging, Conrad drew his sword and began to walk slowly from behind Camilla.
If more reinforcements arrived, they wouldn't be able to hold out.
Lynfia shouted her orders.
"Everyone else retreat and leave this to me! Just get Prince Rupert and Lady Gianna out of here!"
Lynfia fought to hold back the guards.
Rear guard.
A noble task, Conrad thought with a smile.
"There's no need for that."
"Indeed, Wilhelm and Erik will win so resisting here is pointless. Even if you survive, it will only lead to a painful death so just die here quietly."
"Yes, it's better to die here and be happy."
Conrad said as he swiftly thrust his sword. The sword smoothly pierced through Camilla's back and came out of her chest.
What happened?
Camilla couldn't comprehend it and looked at Conrad.
"My apologies, Mother Camilla."
With blood spurting from her mouth, Camilla turned around to look back. There was no doubt that it was Conrad who stabbed her.
Why did Conrad betray her?
"Why...? I am... your foster mother..."
Conrad's birth mother was the Fourth Consort Sofia. However, Sofia was a martial artist who was engrossed in raising Gordon, so Conrad was effectively raised by Camilla.
However,
"I appreciate you for taking me in. But the person who showed me love was someone else and you only took me in as a formality. We never even shared a meal together so don't pretend to be my mother."
"You..."
Conrad pulled out his sword as Camilla staggered towards him, using her last strength to scratch his cheek with her nails. Blood trickled down Conrad's cheek, but that was all she could manage. Camilla lost her strength and fell as Conrad gently caught her.
"Rest in peace."
"Traitor..."
"Yes, I'm a traitor."
Conrad held Camilla's hand until she quietly passed away.
Then,
"Finish them off."
At Conrad's command, his bodyguards attacked Camilla's guards. Sandwiched between Lynfia's group and Conrad's bodyguards, the guards were quickly defeated.
"Conrad, you didn't betray Father..."
"Rupert, you shouldn't trust people so easily."
In a slightly stern tone, Conrad scolded Rupert and had his bodyguards clear the way.
"I used you to get rid of Mother Camilla. To make amends, the route from here is clear."
Conrad turned his back on Lynfia's group as if he had no further use for them.
Lynfia called out to Conrad.
"Prince Conrad, why did you have to kill Queen Camilla?"
"If I didn't, someone else would have. The only way to disrupt the Adler family is through blood ties and affection. So, it's best to remove those factors first. That's all. Now, please take care of my little brother."
With that, Conrad walked away.
There were still questions in Lynfia’s head but they couldn't stay here any longer.
If Conrad was letting them go, they should take the opportunity.
"Let's go."
"But, Prince Conrad..."
"Prince Conrad must have his reasons. Right now, escaping from the Capital is the priority."
Camilla and them were pitted against each other to make it look like they were defeated. That way, Camilla’s death could be considered as an accident and Camilla's strong guards would be thinned out easily.
It was all part of Conrad's plan.
But why was Conrad doing this?
Lynfia didn't know. The only certainty was that Conrad had killed his foster mother, just as he had his birth mother.
