The Strongest Dull Prince’s Secret Battle for the Throne
Chapter 685: Traugott's FuryChapter 685: Traugott's Fury
In the Principality.
Traugott, who had returned to his homeland, was enraged after hearing Wilhelm's speech.
"Order the mobilization of all the nobles! Gather as many soldiers as possible!"
"But Your Majesty! If we attack now, it will be considered an invasion!"
Brad, who had succeeded after Arnold as the chancellor of the Principality, desperately tried to calm the furious Traugott.
"But I said we will invade! We must capture the Imperial Capital immediately!"
"Your Majesty! Please be calm! If we launch a unilateral attack, our nation alone will be deemed as the villain!"
"That person in the Imperial Capital is an imposter that is pretending to be my elder brother! And now, he dares to declare himself the Crown Prince of the Empire! Not only that, my mother and sister-in-law, who were in the Imperial Capital, are missing! We've only received information that the Consort Palace was set on fire! Furthermore, he had the audacity to offer a moment of silence for my younger brother! He knows nothing and mocks my family! I am not calm enough to endure this!!!"
Traugott's fury was palpable, as his voice was loud enough to seem as if he was about to draw his sword. Brad was slightly intimidated by Traugott's genuine anger as it was something that he had never seen from the gentle King before. It really looked like he was willing to die to kill Wilhelm. However, as the chancellor bearing the nation's responsibilities, Brad couldn't afford to be intimidated by the furious King."Your anger is justified but as the chancellor, I cannot allow this."
"Then I will dismiss you as chancellor!"
"You are the king! Do as you wish! But I will not allow this! If you must insist, then you may cut me down and go! I learned from the former chancellor that I very much respect that sometimes the chancellor must defy the king's wishes! If your anger won't subside, then cut me down! Maybe then you will regain some calmness!"
Provoked by Brad, Traugott instinctively reached for his sword. In his uncalm state, Brad seemed like a nuisance that was preventing him from achieving his goal. Yet, Traugott did not draw his sword.
"Damn it..."
"Your Majesty... you are the king of this Principality. Your concern for your family is understandable. However, please also consider the people of the Principality."
"..."
Traugott clenched his fists and trembled with rage.
Then.
"...I am sorry."
"Your Majesty is wise. Now is not the time."
Feeling weary, Trau released his grip on his sword and slowly walked back to his throne. Brad exhaled in relief as Traugott abandoned the idea of an invasion. At that moment, a woman entered the throne room.
"Is the discussion over?"
"Lady Marianne..."
"Marianne..."
It was Queen Marianne, Traugott's wife. She approached the weary Traugott who was sitting on the throne and took his hand.
"To the imposter Prince Wilhelm, you are a person of interest. That speech was meant to provoke you and make you invade the Empire’s Capital."
Attacking Wilhelm, who had publicly declared his intention to avoid conflict, would give Wilhelm the moral high ground of self-defense. Even Traugott, if he was calm, would understand this.
But still.
"I am worried about my Mother and Sister-in-law... And also my younger siblings... Did they escape safely? I am just anxious for them..."
"Of course you are. You are kind... and that kindness of yours is being exploited."
Marianne gently embraced the trembling Traugott. Her eyes were tender, but deep inside them, her anger swirled. Just because she was calm at the moment did not mean she was not angry. Marianne also hated Wilhelm enough to want him dead since he was provoking her kind husband to invade them. That alone was enough to make her despise him.
However,
"We cannot fight a battle that we cannot win... So let us wait for the other forces to move, as we are not the only ones who are angry. Fortunately, the Emperor and the Allied Forces are still intact. Therefore, let's conserve our strength until the Emperor returns."
_________
"Queen Francine, regarding this matter... is such an approach acceptable?"
In the Kingdom.
The Kingdom, which had lost its capital and many of its prominent nobles, urgently needed a new monarch. As a result, Princess Francine, Anthem's sister, was appointed as the provisional queen with no objections by the others.
Behind Francine stood the remaining Allied Forces. This meant that no noble would have the idea to challenge her authority.
"I leave everything to you, Chancellor Drollum as I lack the knowledge of politics."
Francine said this with a smile. Nonetheless, she still read through the documents that were handed to her. Despite her lack of knowledge, she still understood the necessity of making an effort.
"Thank you, Your Majesty... But is someone like me truly suitable...?"
Edmond Drollum, the new chancellor, asked while lacking confidence. He had already asked this question countless times. Upon ascending the throne, Francine had not relied on any of the Kingdom’s nobles.
There was no time to decide positions based on noble rank as the Kingdom had lost its capital and was ravaged by war. Despite many cities having surrendered to the Allied Forces, which made reconstruction possible, the damage caused by their battle was immense.
Therefore competent individuals were needed. In such circumstances, Vinfried, who had been leading the Allied Forces, recommended Drollum by stating that he was a capable advisor. He had also proven himself by standing up to Arnold Lakes Adler who was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces. That was enough for Francine to appoint Drollum as chancellor.
"Have confidence, Chancellor. You matched wits with Prince Arnold, someone whom Anthem admired."
"It was because Prince Arnold went easy on me..."
"Even so, there is no wiser person in the Kingdom than you. Please support me, as unworthy as I am, until Anthem returns."
"With all my heart, I will serve Your Highness."
Drollum bowed his head as low as he could. He knew nothing of court etiquette and until recently, he had never even spoken with royalty or high-ranking nobles. He still believed that there were more suitable people besides him.
However, in the face of the nation's crisis, the queen has relied on him to stabilize the nation. To fail now would be a failure as a subject. Now was the time for the Kingdom to be united as one. Drollum quietly retreated to his room and began processing the piles of documents. Among them was a surprising report: It was an unknown demi-human that had appeared alongside an elf.
