2795 Sowing Discord
Lin Mu and Daoist Chu got to work right away, as there was a lot to do.
And they weren't the only ones getting busy. Daoist Chu contacted every Formation Master within the building and told them about the plan. Of course, they were reluctant to participate in such a thing, and some of them were in utter distrust too.
But after a sufficient amount of proof was provided to them by Lin Mu, they all joined without hesitation. Now it was a matter of life and death for them too.
There were about eighty cultivators in the lodge and several more in the other lodges nearby. Lin Mu got in contact with everyone and established a secret network where all of them would be working together.
This alone took about four days to set up, which took up quite a bit of their time. Especially so because the inquisitors had also begun to move.
Ashy had reported that the disappearance of Inquisitor Bernard had finally been noticed, an entire three days after his death. Lin Mu had expected it to happen a lot earlier, but it seemed like Bernard's fierce reputation made people refuse to meet him unless it was required.
The person to discover it was none other than the same man who had gone to deliver him the letter.
He had returned to send more letters but had found the man nowhere. They had searched the entire fortress and didn't find him there, and no records of him ever leaving it were also seen.
This caused the inquisitors to be quite shocked, and they quickly got to investigating. The exact events were still unknown, as Ashy couldn't obtain all the information and Lin Mu couldn't leave the work and go out.
But from the way it was going, they were treating this disappearance the same as the disappearance of commoners.
Except now they were a bit scared, since someone as powerful as an inquisitor had disappeared.
They were investigating it seriously, but there were simply no clues left.
The only big clue they had was the fact that the inquisitor's great sword had disappeared. They had thought of it as common theft, but since nothing else was touched in the room, they discarded the thought.
They soon developed a suspicion that this might have been a matter of revenge.
The fact that Inquisitor Bernard had taken the great sword from a cultivator was well known. While it had happened almost fifty years ago, the people there knew all about it.
Thus, they began looking for people that might have links to the cultivator from back then.
Of course, they also came to check up on the cultivators living in the lodges but received nothing from them, since none of them had actually left the lodges. This was confirmed by their own arrays, so they had no reason to question it.
The matter soon reached the higher-ups of the church, who were quite confused too.
It was then that Ashy informed Lin Mu about certain individuals doing their rounds in the city. She specially informed him of them because they were wearing the same type of robes that Lin Mu was wearing.
"Keepers?" Lin Mu asked.
"Yes, that's what they called them. They're collecting information and seem to be quite secretive. No one questions them, and everyone that meets them is scared silly. Even those scary inquisitors answer them like obedient children," Ashy answered.
Hearing that, Lin Mu finally understood the behavior of the people that had met him.
'I thought they were just being respectful. I didn't know that I assumed a rather high rank,' Lin Mu was surprised. 'There were no proper records about them either other than their appearance,' he thought to himself.
From what he could understand, Keepers were a special group of individuals that were in charge of handling internal investigations as well as keeping records about all matters.
They were similar to the inquisitors, except for the fact that they worked directly for the pope.
They were normally never seen, which was why the people were surprised to see Lin Mu outside.
'If they are involved, it means this matter has already reached the pope,' Lin Mu thought to himself.
He didn't know if it would be beneficial to them or not, but at the very least, it seemed to be delaying their impending doom.
Now even the higher-ups of the church were wondering if there were real disappearances happening.
'Looks like I can add some fuel to the fire now,' Lin Mu smirked as he temporarily halted his work and let others take care of it.
He then headed out and went to the Fortress of the Inquisitors.
There, another handful of inquisitors 'disappeared' in the span of a few minutes.
It took another day for them to learn of this, which truly scared them.
Lin Mu kept this up, going out every night to make some inquisitors 'disappear.'
He picked those with relatively 'bad' records, as he didn't wish to harm innocent people. Though among the inquisitors such people were truly hard to find, so Lin Mu's work became easier.
Later on, he began to target not just the inquisitors but also the clergy.
Deacons, priests, and even a couple of bishops disappeared, which sent the city into a lockdown.
Now everyone was scared and wondered if there were really heretics at work. But they couldn't find any traces at all, which made the matter worse.
And for the first time, they didn't think of blaming the travelers.
After all, their very own arrays were telling them otherwise.
The work progressed steadily, with thousands of talismans being made every day. These were common explosive talismans that were used by cultivators as expendables. They couldn't injure anyone stronger than the Second Tribulation Stage Immortals, but combined together, they turned into a formidable force.
They could be turned into a large-scale Demolition Array!
These would serve as the 'distraction' that Lin Mu needed for everyone to have a chance at escaping.
