Chapter 1322: Blood
With Khan acting as an endless power source, Zalpa could focus on the [Harmony Technique] without running herself dry, continuously keeping it up to deal with Liiza’s hibernation in one go.
The white membrane around Liiza’s curled body had visible effects on her. Her figure remained cold, but her temperature rose, melting the ice on her while bringing some healthy paleness to her complexion.
In a few minutes, the hibernation was dealt with. Liiza didn’t awaken but lost her stiffness. Her complexion also regained her natural color as her physical functions resumed working at full speed, allowing Zalpa to interrupt the healing technique.
"[Wait here]," Zalpa ordered, removing her hands from Liiza to stand up. "[We must deal with the nutrients now]."
Khan didn’t bother to nod. His stance already conveyed how he had no intentions of leaving Liiza anytime soon. He even crossed his legs, gently adjusting Liiza’s figure on his lap, laying her down in a more comfortable position.
The loving scene almost made a smile appear on Zalpa’s face, but she snapped out of it as soon as she sensed that incoming reaction. A snort escaped her mouth as she hurried inside the ship, leaving the married couple alone.
Khan could see the need for Zalpa’s hurry. With Liiza’s physical functions restored, the baby began to drain her of nutrients at full speed. She had even exhausted herself performing the previous techniques, leaving her in quite a critical condition.
Nevertheless, Khan didn’t worry needlessly. He trusted Liiza completely. She would have never done what she did if it risked hurting the baby, so his focus went elsewhere.
Khan caressed the beautiful face on his lap, gently holding Liiza’s cheek before reaching for her bloated belly. The life inside it was growing warmer and warmer, seemingly ready to resume kicking.
"[Mama needs to sleep for a bit]," Khan whispered in the Niqols’ language, placing his palm on Liiza’s belly. "[Can I trust you to behave until then]?"
Khan didn’t know whether his request truly achieved anything or everything was due to the [Harmony Technique]. However, the kicking didn’t resume, and that was enough for him.
"[Good boy]," Khan praised. "[Leave everything to Papa for now]."
Khan gently patted Liiza’s belly before moving his gaze to her face, illuminating her with his blue light. Baby aside, he had much to think about, and his most trusted confidant was asleep now.
The partially unfounded conclusions reached during the battle weren’t something Khan could confirm on his own. Actually, only the Nak probably had all the answers, but Liiza understood the mana better than he did, so he wanted her opinion on the matter.
The Scarlet Eyes, the grand enemy in the Nak’s mission, looked eerily similar to that genocidal species. They seemed to wield mana that wasn’t mana, chaos greater than chaos, and their goals also partially aligned.
The Nak had spread the mana as far as possible to save it, while the Scarlet Eyes wanted to devour it. Khan couldn’t be sure about how literally he could take the shorter alien’s words. Still, the Great Old One’s species had done something similar with that energy, so that initial conclusion was relatively acceptable.
However, Khan’s thoughts went deeper than that, exploring a concerning idea that had manifested itself during the battle.
The Nak wanted to create an heir that could evolve past the mana through the chaos element, which sounded like an exact description of the Scarlet Eyes.
After all, the Scarlet Eyes did wield something that surpassed the mana while resembling the chaos element. They looked like an iteration of what the Nak wanted Khan to become, and he couldn’t help but feel that a connection existed between the two.
Khan and Liiza’s performance during the battle seemed to confirm that point. They had been able to hold their own against that glowing black smoke when summoning abilities that went beyond the mana’s limits.
Khan had even outclassed the glowing black smoke after achieving complete understanding of his element. That moment probably marked his success in wanting to surpass the Nak before meeting them, earning him a power that could match the Scarlet Eyes.
That would mean that Khan had been correct about his training. He had only needed to gain access to the full extent of his element to finalize the process.
However, that would also partially confirm Khan’s guess. Both he and the Scarlet Eyes had surpassed the mana now, making them two sides of the same coin.
’Are the Scarlet Eyes the mana’s previous attempt at creating an heir?’ Khan wondered, quickly discarding that idea. ’No, their threat made the mana push the Nak into their mission.’
The more complete and reasonable guess came from the similarities between Khan and the Scarlet Eyes. He had surpassed the mana on his own, before inheriting the Nak’s legacy, so others could have achieved that, too.
The Scarlet Eyes might have been fellow chaos wielders who had gone rogue in the past, evolving and twisting the mana to their own needs. Their God might have also been the first rebel, establishing a proper, stronger species after that separation.
Khan knew his mind had long since reached completely hypothetical fields, but didn’t stop his reasoning. Even if he ended up being wrong about some details or everything, certain implications would remain true.
The Scarlet Eyes were coming, and Khan’s side of the universe was unequipped to deal with them. Besides, he couldn’t just teach people how to surpass the mana nor taint them with his chaos. He was no god, either, but something told him only he could fill that role.
Zalpa’s return interrupted Khan’s reasoning. The old Niqols placed a bucket with a smelly, dense liquid on the grey sand, stirring it with her hand while the other added supplies to that dark concoction.
The old Niqols’ stirring also involved mana, enhancing whatever she was brewing in the bucket. Yet, the concoction still lacked one key ingredient.
"[Khan, I need your blood]," Zalpa explained, her glowing eyes fixed on the metal bucket. "[I’ll draw symbols on Lii to nourish her while she is asleep, and your blood has plenty of nutrients]."
"[Sure]," Khan instantly agreed, not wasting a single second pondering the request. "[Take as much as you want]."
Khan lifted his left arm toward Zalpa, closing his fingers to pierce his palm. Drops of blood quickly fell on the grey sand past Liiza, but the process seemed ready to end already due to Khan’s insane healing properties.
Zalpa didn’t waste time and cupped her hands under Khan’s palm, gathering a few drops of his blood. She even scooped a single one of them with her forefinger, flicking it inside the makeshift cauldron.
The dark, dense liquid inside the bucket started boiling, gaining red shades while releasing black smoke. Zalpa stirred it a bit longer, waiting for those fumes to disperse, before nodding to herself.
"[It’s ready]," Zalpa announced.
"[Wait, you only took a drop]," Khan complained, waving his stretched hand at Zalpa, almost beckoning her. "[Are you sure you don’t need more? Can’t you take ten more? A hundred more]?"
Zalpa lifted her gaze, showing an annoyed expression. She couldn’t be certain, but she could smell the idiocy behind Khan’s questions.
"[Liiza always bleeds for me]," Khan explained. "[Imagine how much I could tease her if you bleed me dry]."
Zalpa didn’t feel any happiness confirming that her hunches had been correct. She simply lowered her gaze to Liiza, cursing silently for ever allowing herself to end up with those two horny, dumb kids.
