Chapter 2219 – Absurdity
The night was dark and tranquil, with misty starlight shining overhead.
The pines rustled on the mountain’s slopes, the sound like natural music.
A delicate figure in pristine white raiment stood there, her clothing billowing in the breeze. The sight only made her seem all the more movingly beautiful and graceful.
Lu Qingmei!
This woman had appeared out of nowhere on LIttle Pine Peak; it seemed she’d been waiting here for him.
After a brief, stunned pause, Su Yi turned to leave.
“Wait. I’ve already gotten your second high elder’s permission to come see you.” Lu Qingmei turned around, and her bright eyes locked onto Su Yi.
Beneath the misty light of the stars, her youthful, supremely beautiful features shone with dreamlike luster.
“What can I do for you, Senior?” asked Su Yi.
“Senior?” A playful grin tugged at Lu Qingmei’s shiny red lips. She took a few light, airy steps forward and appeared before Su Yi.
When she was just one step away from him, she looked up and gazed directly into her eyes. She was so close that her breath tickled his face. “This new body of yours is actually quite extraordinary.”
Su Yi’s brow furrowed. She’d gotten too close, so close that he caught hints of her subtle but distinctive fragrance.
All sorts of wondrous and enchanting visions of dual cultivation rose unbidden to his mind.
No, they weren’t just “visions.” They were memories and feelings, as clear as if he’d experienced them, reveled in them, savored them, and been enthralled by them personally.
“What are you thinking about?” said Lu Qingmei, her beautiful gaze as deep as the night sky.
“I’m wondering why someone of your status would want to speak to me from such close quarters. Isn’t this unbefitting for someone of your advanced age?” Su Yi asked calmly.
Lu Qingmei’s expression froze. ‘Someone of my advanced age!?’
“If you want to speak with me, please, show some self-respect. I’d hate to tarnish my reputation,” said Su Yi. As he spoke, he took several steps back.
Lu Qingmei’s eyes flashed with irritation, but then, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Even your sect leader treated this lofty one with the utmost respect and referred to himself as a junior, but look at you! You’re just a paltry little Lesser God, yet you’re bold enough to taunt me to my face. I can’t help but suspect that you aren’t simply a descendant of the Torch Dragons after all.”
Su Yi sighed to himself. This was the risk of private conversations; it was easy to arouse suspicion.
Especially since Lu Qingmei knew Yi Daoxuan well. The moment Su Yi’s words or movements let anything slip, Lu Qingmei would sense the abnormality instantly.
“Why not say anything?” Lu Qingmei gazed intently into Su Yi’s eyes, as if trying to glean insight into the secrets hidden in the deepest recesses of his heart.
“I don’t understand what you’re saying,” Su Yi said casually, “So I have nothing to say in response.”
That’s right. He’d simply decided to play dumb.
“Hah. You don’t understand?” Lu Qingmei snickered. “Very well, I can’t be bothered to expose you. I’ll just take you for ‘Xiao Jian’ for now.”
Su Yi furrowed his brow but didn’t argue. Instead, he just said, “Might I ask why you’ve come looking for me, Senior?”
“I’m sure you know the answer to that full well,” said Lu Qingmei, twirling a lock of her dark hair. Even though she did it without thinking, the gesture was extraordinarily amorous and enticing.
She really was beautiful, extraordinarily so, and despite her apparent youth, her movements were mature and composed. When she looked around, she had the air of an empress long accustomed to power.
Scenes of passionate entanglements rose unbidden to Su Yi’s mind once more, and his heart rippled.
But then, his heart shook, and his pupils constricted.
It wasn’t that Lu Qingmei had used some sort of charm magic on him.
She was just innately enchanting. Her natural charms, combined with her Nine-Tribulation Master Goddess cultivation base, lent her every gesture a formless power. Even an inadvertent gesture could influence others’ hearts and minds!
It was then that Lu Qingmei opened her palm, revealing a green hairpin. “Do you recognize this?”
Su Yi instinctively looked at it. It was only seven inches long, simple and elegant, without the slightest adornment. It looked almost like a bright, smooth, green flying sword.
The words “At Ease” were carved at the tail end of the hairpin.
A strange feeling arose in Su Yi’s heart, as if a long, long emotion had been drawn to the surface, only to transform into a building, irrepressible volcano.
But then, Su Yi’s heart sharpened like the edge of a sword, cleaving through that building emotional outburst without hesitation.
Practically simultaneously, he furrowed his brow. “Senior, do you perhaps plan to give that hairpin to me?”
Lu Qingmei was stunned. She gazed intently at Su Yi, as if she’d run into a confusing, unsolvable problem. After a while, her bright eyes frosted over, and the tenderness on her face gave way to imposing majesty.
Then, as if unable to hold back any longer, she reached for Su Yi’s throat.
Su Yi just stood there calmly, not moving a muscle.
But then, a cold, stern voice rang out. “Fellow Daoist!”
Lu Qingmei instantly came to her senses. Her fingers stopped just as they were about to reach Su Yi’s throat, and she lowered her hand at lightning speed.
Practically simultaneously, Second Elder Bai Liyun appeared beneath the night sky, seemingly out of nowhere.
Her brow was furrowed with anger. “Fellow Daoist, what are you doing? You promised me that you just wanted to talk to Vice Palace Master Xiao and learn more about the Torch Dragons. Why are you attacking him?”
Lu Qingmei fell briefly silent, then said airily, “Fellow Daoist, rest assured. I was just playing a little joke on our young friend.”
“A joke? It doesn’t seem that way to me,” Su Yi said darkly. “It’s obvious that your shame turned into anger just now. You wanted to hurt me!”
Bai Liyun’s expression frosted over. “Fellow Daoist, please leave immediately!”
It would have been obvious to anyone that she was furious, but she was reining her temper in out of consideration for Lu Qingmei’s dignity.
“Give me just a few minutes more,” said Lu Qingmei. She took a deep breath, then silently put away the hairpin. “I swear by my Dao Heart not to harm a hair on Xiao Jian’s head.”
Bai Liyun looked at Su Yi. “What do you think, little fellow?”
Su Yi fell briefly silent, then nodded. “High Elder, with you here, I’m not afraid she’ll try anything.”
Bai Liyun’s smile warmed slightly. “You’re right. This is Qingwu Divine Court territory. No one will just stand back and watch as others do you harm!”
She then turned to look at Lu Qingmei. “You have ten minutes. You’d best keep your promise.”
With that, she turned to give them space.
Lu QIngmei, meanwhile, raised her fingertip into the air. A curtain of light floated into being, reflecting a young man in long, plain robes.
His hair was up in a Daoist topknot, his skin was as fair and smooth as jade, and his features were handsome, youthful, and angular.
The moment Su Yi laid eyes on him, he seemed somehow familiar. A moment later, he understood. The young man looked a lot like Yi Daoxuan!
“This is my adopted son,” said Lu Qingmei, gazing intently at Su Yi. “His name is Lu Zhanxuan. Earlier today, in the Great Profound Realm clash of the Dao, he defeated every opponent Qingwu Divine Court sent into battle.”
Lu Zhanxuan!
Su Yi instantly sensed the meaning behind the name, and he couldn’t help but find it strange. “Lu” was just Lu Qingmei’s surname, but “Zhan” meant “to sever.”
I’m afraid the ‘Xuan’ he’s supposed to sever is… Yi Daoxuan?
Even as Su Yi’s thoughts raced, he remained silent.
“But although no one in this world knows it, my adopted son has yet another identity,” said Lu Qingmei, her gaze distant. “This is my greatest secret. Not even my master or my current Dao Partner know it.”
Su Yi was vaguely starting to guess something, but outwardly, his brow furrowed. “Why are you telling me this, senior?”
“You don’t want to hear this secret?” Lu Qingmei’s eyes reflected the light of the stars. They were uncharacteristically tender.
Su Yi shook his head. “I don’t.”
Lu Qingmei was briefly stunned, then she said in a tone rife with meaning, “You dare not hear it?”
“I really don’t dare to hear it, Senior,” Su Yi said casually. “I’m afraid that if I learn your deepest secret, you’ll kill me to silence me.”
Lu Qingmei laughed derisively, her gaze hard to read. “I don’t care whether you’re putting on an act or whether that’s really how you feel. You’re going to hear this secret whether you like it or not!”
“….” Su Yi knew that when a woman started being this unreasonable, it meant she couldn’t be bothered to beat around the bush or drag things out. She was going to lay everything out into the open!
Lu Qingmei approached, then leaned over. Her red lips parted, and she whispered into Su Yi’s ear. “My secret is that Lu Zhanxuan’s biological father is the very same Yi Daoxuan the gods killed all those years ago, while I am actually his biological mother!”
Su Yi was stunned. Inside, he felt as if he’d been struck by lightning. Tidal waves of shock coursed through his heart. The son of Yi Daoxuan and Lu Qingmei!? How is that possible?
Yi Daoxuan had indeed gotten married and had children, but his wife wasn’t Lu Qingmei, and his son wasn’t Lu Zhanxuan!
Yi Daoxuan’s descendants had gone on to form a clan, but as time passed, they’d effectively been wiped out. Only two sisters, Yi Shuang’er and Yi Ling’er, remained!
But Su Yi couldn’t say that Lu Zhanxuan wasn’t Yi Daoxuan’s son, as they looked extraordinarily alike. Moreover, Lu Qingmei was a Nine-Tribulation Master Goddess; there was no need for her to joke around about something like that.
“You’re surprised, aren’t you?” Lu Qingmei took two steps back, then gazed inscrutably at Su Yi. “If Yi Daoxuan’s enemies knew that I’d given him a son, I’m afraid I’d become the common foe of everyone beneath the heavens, and my son would be doomed to follow in his father’s footsteps.”
Su Yi let out a deep breath. “I’m indeed surprised. This secret of yours is quite shocking, Senior. But why tell it to me? Aren’t you afraid I’ll leak it and bring the world’s fury down on you and your son?”
Lu Qingmei’s gaze was complicated. She sighed. “I’m not afraid of retribution, but I can’t help but worry that my useless son will die without ever getting to meet his biological father.”
Su Yi remained unmoved. Lu Qingmei was more than just a pretty face; she was crafty and unpredictable.
“Forgive my boldness,” said Su Yi, “But everyone knows that Yi Daoxuan died a long, long time ago. How could Lu Zhanxuan possibly be his son?”
Lu Qingmei said calmly, “Because, although not even Yi Daoxuan knew it, I secretly sealed some of his seed within my body. Do you understand now?”
“…”
Su Yi really was stunned. He’d never even considered the possibility that the woman who’d accompanied Yi Daoxuan all those years would do something so unbelievable.
Absurd! Simply absurd!
