Chapter 1146: 1145 Can he still speak?

As Mo Xiuchen spoke, Luo Haofeng’s cough came through the phone, sounding like he’d choked on water.

“Mo Xiuchen, I’ll call Ah Mu in a bit.”

“Haha, go ahead. I not only kept Ah Mu in G City, but I also made sure An Lin stayed in G City. If you lure Ah Mu back to City C, An Lin will resent you for it.” Mo Xiuchen was completely unconcerned about Luo Haofeng stirring up trouble.

“You really live up to being Mo the schemer. Since you’ve kept An Lin here, I really can’t ask Ah Mu to return to City C.”

The protagonists being discussed over the phone by Mo Xiuchen and Luo Haofeng were, at that moment, one signing a contract with clients in Haochen’s conference room, and the other, holding Ziyi outside Gu Kai’s office, eavesdropping on confidential matters.

In the office, Fang Zhiwei’s voice came through the door, ever so gentle and soft, “Ah Kai, try the food I made today and let me know your thoughts, so I can improve next time.”

When Fang Zhiwei came to the office, Gu Kai had been at the hospital, only returning from the ward minutes ago.

Gu Kai didn’t really want to eat the meal Fang Zhiwei brought—the incident notwithstanding, he had said he no longer blamed her, but deep down, he still held a grudge.

But Fang Zhiwei wore a face full of guilt, as if rejecting her would make him some unforgivable villain.

Gu Kai hesitated, then nodded and sat down in front of the sofa.

A radiant smile immediately bloomed on Fang Zhiwei’s face, delightedly opening the lunch box and taking out the dishes she’d made herself—two dishes and a soup, all Gu Kai’s favorites.

“I brought enough for two,” Fang Zhiwei said while serving the rice, cheerfully explaining.

Gu Kai leaned back on the sofa with a detached expression, quietly watching Fang Zhiwei serve the rice and hand him chopsticks before placing food in his bowl, “Ah Kai, try this.”

“You eat, I can help myself.”

Gu Kai gave a symbolic curl of his lips, picked up the chopsticks, and tasted the sweet and sour ribs she had made.

Fang Zhiwei didn’t eat, instead watching Gu Kai with a tender gaze, seemingly waiting for him to assess the taste of her dish.

“How is it, does it taste alright?”

Actually, she’d made the same dishes several times for Gu Kai before, and the flavor was just as it had always been.

Gu Kai smiled, “It’s very tasty.”

“If you like it, eat more; you’ve lost weight recently.” There was a hint of concern in Fang Zhiwei’s voice as she spoke, and she continued to pile ribs onto Gu Kai’s bowl.

Outside, after listening for a few minutes, An Lin knocked on the door.

“I’ll get the door, you keep eating.” Hearing the knock, Fang Zhiwei immediately set down her chopsticks and rushed over to open it.

“An Lin, why are you here holding Ziyi?”

Seeing An Lin outside, Fang Zhiwei blinked in surprise, stepped aside to let her in, and invited her, “Would you like to try my cooking? Ah Kai said it’s delicious.”

“No thanks, I had a late breakfast, not hungry.” An Lin smiled and, holding Ziyi, walked up to the sofa, meeting Gu Kai’s gaze. She asked cheerfully, “Ah Kai, I’m not interrupting your private meal with Miss Fang, am I?”

Gu Kai’s brow furrowed slightly and he was just about to speak when Ziyi in An Lin’s arms suddenly began to cry.

Seeing this, Gu Kai quickly put down his chopsticks, got up, and took Ziyi from An Lin’s arms, “Let me see, why is Ziyi crying?”

An Lin cooperatively loosened her grip, allowing him to take Ziyi.

“Ah Kai, let me hold Ziyi, you eat,” Fang Zhiwei said gently, coming over as Gu Kai placed Ziyi on the nearby sofa.

“No need, you eat.”

Without a second thought, Gu Kai refused Fang Zhiwei, his words laced with a faint hint of resistance.

It was an instinctive rejection, perhaps he hadn’t even noticed, but Fang Zhiwei saw the refusal in his eyes and her expression subtly changed.

“You see if Ziyi has pooped,” An Lin said upon seeing the fleeting sadness in Fang Zhiwei’s eyes. Her own eyes shimmered and she turned to Gu Kai.

“I know.”

Gu Kai placed Ziyi on the sofa, intending to check if the baby had wet or soiled himself. Lifting the blanket, he chuckled after a moment, “Little guy, can you only cry when you poop?”

“Pfft, how old is Ziyi? He’s not just a crybaby. What else could he do, talk?”

An Lin watched Gu Kai with amusement, but Fang Zhiwei was mesmerized by his indulgent smile. She stared at him absentmindedly for a while, forgetting to pass him a tissue.

Without looking up, Gu Kai directed An Lin, “An Lin, open the second drawer on the left. There are diapers inside.”

“I’ll get them.”

His words snapped Fang Zhiwei back to reality, and she hurriedly went to fetch the diapers.

An Lin stood by, wearing a smile as she watched Gu Kai and Fang Zhiwei busy themselves with Ziyi, like someone enjoying a show.

“Ziyi stopped crying. Give him to me, so I won’t feel guilty for disrupting your meal,” An Lin said, her voice filled with supposed guilt, though her expression was anything but remorseful.

“Forget it, I’ll take Ziyi back to the hospital room.”

Gu Kai avoided the hands An Lin extended towards him and said to Fang Zhiwei, “You eat first. I have a lunch engagement. After I take Ziyi back, I won’t return.”

“Ah Kai!”

Fang Zhiwei’s face changed, and she called out unwittingly.

Gu Kai glanced at her, questioning what was wrong.

Fang Zhiwei pressed her lips together, then showed a slight smile, “You go. I have to return to school later. I have classes in the afternoon. I’ll come to see Ranran and the two babies again tomorrow.”

“You don’t need to come every day. Ranran will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.”

Gu Kai once again rejected Fang Zhiwei’s offer, and the nearby An Lin barely managed to conceal her sympathy as she saw Fang Zhiwei become dejected once again.

“Ah Kai, Miss Fang came to the hospital to have lunch with you despite having classes in the afternoon. How could you leave her alone here? Look, I’ll take Ziyi back to the room. You go entertain your guests. Miss Fang can’t possibly eat here by herself. Why not let her leave with you instead?”

After An Lin finished speaking, she stepped forward and reached out to take Ziyi.

“Okay.” Gu Kai hesitated for a moment, then handed Ziyi back to An Lin, reminding her, “Don’t wander around holding Ziyi. Take him back to the room. Ranran will probably start missing him soon.”

“I know.” An Lin pouted playfully and smiled at Fang Zhiwei before leaving his office with Ziyi in her arms.

Riding the elevator up, An Lin emerged to see Mo Xiuchen sitting in the resting area.

He had just finished a phone call. When An Lin approached, he put away his phone, stood up, and took Ziyi from her arms.

“Weren’t you going to find Ah Kai? How come you’re back so soon?” Mo Xiuchen’s gaze lingered on Ziyi’s face for a few seconds before casually asking An Lin.

“I went to enjoy the show, and now I’m back.”

An Lin laughed, speaking mysteriously, “Xiuchen, I’ve discovered a secret. Do you want to know what it is?”

“What secret?” Mo Xiuchen asked nonchalantly, finally shifting his gaze from his beloved son to look at An Lin.

An Lin giggled, glanced in the direction of the TV, and said, “Ah Kai and Fang Zhiwei, their interactions are so strange.”
