Chapter 1005: 1005 Improvement Flight
That night, the candidates were gathered to see how their first day of shadowing the pentacle members went. It was obvious that nobody would turn down that sort of power, but if they were having second thoughts about doing the work, or were only excited about the prospect of power, then it was important that Wolfe and the others catch that fast.
These meetings were designed to set everyone at ease. If they were relaxed and not stuck in their professional mode, they would let more of their inner feelings out, and that might provide valuable insight into a few who would have been otherwise overlooked.
That could be good or bad, as the quiet one whose excitement for the job was overlooked was just as likely to have their positive aspects noticed as the cruel or power hungry one was to slip up and out themselves as an unsuitable person.
“Well, how was it, everyone?” Wolfe asked as they all sat down to dinner together.
The candidates muttered various platitudes, though he could see that most of them were exhausted, as the witches had been trying to fit everything into the day shift, while some of them would normally nap in the afternoon and finish their work in the evening when different people were awake.
That had required some shift shuffling during the trial period, with other Witches covering the evening and night shifts, but no matter how hard they tried, there were still some people coming looking for them.
“There are so many people who need so many little things. It’s like everyone in the pentacle needs three assistants, and nobody knows who to go to for anything.” One of the Candidates complained.
“Who were you with today?” Wolfe asked curiously.
“I was with Carmine and Molly.” She replied, not understanding why it mattered. The others had all experienced the same thing.
“Ah, yes I see what you mean. The Pentacles are essentially my assistants. Every one of them takes care of any task that can’t be done by those underneath them, but some are especially easy to approach, so people come to them for everything.”
The Candidates sighed, and Wolfe nodded. “We will eventually have to formalize things a bit more than they are now so that it isn’t always chaos. Forest Grove has just undergone a massive influx of people, and more are coming next week, so for now, chaos will be part of everyday life.
Once we get everyone settled into the new expansion, there should be far fewer requests, but in the days leading up to the Festival, when all the new arrivals are coming to set up vendor stalls, move into their new businesses, and in the case of a few thousand of them, completely relocate to the city, we are expecting an even heavier workload.
Think of it as a trial by fire. If you can survive this, then you should be alright. But delegating is also part of the Pentacle’s job, so when you reach a breaking point, it is important to know who to turn people to in order to reduce your own stress.”
The witches laughed. While their days had been full, and they had been keeping busy, this was far from the worst that they had seen it. The number of questions was mostly only excessive for a few of them, who were doing jobs that interacted the most with people.
For example, Carmine liked to wander the city looking for those in need. After spending years with her mana system damaged, now that she could actually help people, she did her very best.
Of course, she was a Demon with a limited range of actual abilities, but she had embroidered robes with dozens more spells, and a number of Witch charms with her, so she could do most of the things that had been requested of her in the past.
“I will have to leave town for a day or two, and I would like everyone’s input on whether I should take a Candidate group with me for the trip, or whether I should have the ones who would be assigned to those going to Gormana added to the other groups.” Wolfe announced, changing the direction of their conversation once he saw that it was getting off track with candidates just asking for stories from the Pentacle members.
Mary shook her head. “I think it would be best to leave them behind. You are probably going to take your bodyguards, plus Cassie and Ella, and that would be far too many candidates to send on a field trip.
Especially when we know they’re going to find some way to make it seem hospitable to stay an extra day or two.”
The others nodded in agreement. That was what usually happened, if it wasn’t something even more extreme, like some sort of surprise invasion that they hadn’t noticed until Wolfe happened to walk right into it like they weren’t even hiding.
“Alright, if there are no complaints, then it will be the six of us going on the trip, and we will try to be back in two days, but Mary is right. Once we finish with that, then they are likely to ask for even more, and throw a party or some other nonsense that will delay us in returning from Gormana.” Wolfe agreed.
“Oh, bring me back something cute. They make all sorts of stuffed toys there, but by the time the merchants get here, all the really good stuff is gone.” Mary added.
Wolfe laughed and gave her a mocking bow. “Anything you say, Lady Mary. We will obtain the fluffiest of stuffed toys that you could imagine.”
With that, they called it a night, and Wolfe returned to his room to prepare for the next day’s trip. If he made some mana crystal in advance, it would be easier for them to cast all the spells that they needed, as he could draw the extra stored mana as if they had brought additional people with them.
The power plants would be simple, a matter of minutes each. But the Garden Charm to cover an entire country would take much more effort, even with the power of the two witches.
