Chapter 884: Chapter 866: Altar
“These high-level demons… Could it be because of the Azure Fang that they’re not attacking?”
Seeing hundreds of high-level demons surrounding him but not attacking, Rocky naturally didn’t think it was his own deterrence that was at play. He quickly thought of the Azure Fang.
First, the Azure Fang itself came from the tooth of a Great Demon. As the highest existence among demons, even a single tooth of a Great Demon holds immense power. Second, ever since he obtained the Azure Fang, Rocky had been surrounded by strange occurrences, from unexplained white flashes at the start to now being encircled by hundreds of demons. Clearly, all of this was connected to the Azure Fang.
Even more crucially, the Azure Fang now radiated a far stronger light than before, appearing distinctly different. Coupled with the demons’ reactions, it further confirmed Rocky’s initial suspicion: the Azure Fang’s transformation seemed to be a form of guidance.
This Mist Mountain must be hiding an even greater secret!
With that in mind, Rocky made a bold decision. Holding the glowing Magic Fang Scythe high, he leapt from the tree branch, landing heavily on the ground below!
Once on the ground, Rocky immediately held the Magic Fang Scythe horizontally before his chest. If any demon charged at him, he could immediately strike back. But as he had expected, although the high-level demons surrounded him with some as close as ten meters away, none made a move to attack.
With such close proximity, Rocky could clearly see the eyes of these demons. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that each one glared at him with ferocity, as if eyeing prey. Yet not a single one truly lunged at him, only letting out low, guttural growls in his direction.
Those beast-like growls and the malevolence gleaming in their eyes told Rocky that these demons didn’t fear him—they dreaded the Azure Fang.
As he carefully observed his surroundings, he noticed that the brightness of the Azure Fang’s light shifted based on its orientation. When pointing toward the mountain’s base, the light dimmed; when aimed at the peak, the glow intensified.
With this revelation, he began to stride forward, slowly making his way toward the mountain peak while keeping the Magic Fang Scythe raised.
As he moved, all the surrounding high-level demons followed suit, their movements mirroring his with a slow, deliberate pace. It was as though they neither wanted to let him go nor wished to attack him outright.
This gave Rocky some measure of relief. While being encircled by prowling, watchful high-level demons kept his nerves taut, the fact that they hadn’t launched a collective assault was a good sign. Bolstered by this, he quickened his pace toward the peak. The demons matched his speed, and together they moved swiftly through the mist-shrouded forest of Mist Mountain. Not long after, they reached the summit.
At the mountain’s peak, the demons that had relentlessly encircled Rocky finally halted in their tracks. Not only did they stop, but they also parted to open a passageway. Following the path they cleared, Rocky’s gaze fell upon something that left him utterly dumbfounded: stairs.
At the summit of Mist Mountain stood a massive altar. It resembled a pyramid, perfectly positioned atop the mountain. Yet, shrouded in the densest part of the mist, it had been completely invisible from the outside. Only those who braved the mountain and set foot on its peak could discover this structure.
Rocky stared at the pyramid-like altar, utterly stunned. This was entirely beyond his expectations and filled him with shock. Could this altar have been constructed by demons?
Impossible. Absolutely impossible!
While Rocky firmly believed that demons possessed both intelligence and command structure, he couldn’t believe these monsters could construct something like an altar, especially one so sophisticated. If they could, it would be far too extraordinary.
But if this altar wasn’t built by demons, why did it appear atop Mist Mountain? It was well known that the Myriad Snakes Region had long since been dominated by demons. For decades, no human had dared set foot here. More importantly, if this altar was unrelated to the demons, why did these high-level demons fear it so much?
Yes, the moment the demons parted to grant Rocky a path to the altar, he could unmistakably sense their fear. They were terrified of this altar!
What on earth was going on?
With the stairs just a few steps away, Rocky suddenly found himself unable to move forward. After all, he was still human—capable of feeling fear. Especially in the face of the unknown, his trepidation was inevitable.
But just as he hesitated, the demons behind him unleashed a unified, deafening roar. It was as if they were urging him onward—or threatening him—forcing him to ascend the altar’s stairs!
Taking that first step onto the staircase, Rocky turned to glance back at the roaring demons. What he saw left him completely dumbfounded. Only now did he fully realize that the number of high-level demons gathered around the altar had far exceeded the hundreds that initially surrounded him. It was now a massive, densely packed throng!
Previously, while advancing through the forest, Rocky had been encircled solely by the initial hundred or so demons and hadn’t noticed the situation outside their perimeter. But now, standing atop the summit and stepping onto the altar, he finally turned to survey his surroundings. The area around the altar was swarming with endless masses of high-level demons, possibly numbering over a thousand. Among them, several Magic Dragons had descended, blending into the crowd!
Over a thousand high-level demons… Rocky was utterly shell-shocked. There couldn’t be many people in the world who’d ever witnessed such a monumental spectacle.
Yet this also solidified his realization: retreat was no longer an option. He had no choice but to steel his resolve and ascend the altar.
Though reluctant, Rocky knew there was no turning back. Resolving himself, he adjusted his mindset and steadfastly began to ascend the stairs, moving toward the altar’s summit.
Step by step, ascending the stairs, Rocky maintained utmost caution while observing his surroundings. He couldn’t help but wonder: What was the true purpose of this altar? Based on all visible signs, this was undoubtedly an ancient altar. Even the stairs bore numerous signs of wear and damage. As he climbed higher, the surrounding mist grew increasingly dense, enveloping him so thoroughly that he could only make out the steps beneath his feet.
The thicker the fog became, the more vigilant Rocky grew, his tension mounting with each step. At this point, he was blind to everything around him. It felt as if he had entered an entirely different world. Given the altar’s enigmatic nature and the peculiarity of Mist Mountain, such a hypothesis wasn’t implausible.
However, just as Rocky’s anxiety peaked, a voice suddenly rang out next to his ear:
“This altar was built a hundred years ago by the Gana Tribe.”
“It was constructed for us specifically.”
“Who’s there?!”
Startled by the close proximity of the voice, Rocky spun around immediately…
