Chapter 2007: Escaped

As they returned to the villa, a collective sigh of relief swept through everyone present.

After refreshing themselves with a shower and changing into dry clothes, they sat down to savor hot ginger tea. Despite their attempts to move past the harrowing ordeal, the lingering fear persisted.

Anan, oblivious to the events, remained curious, yearning to glimpse the unfolding drama she had been shielded from. He longed to catch a glimpse of the ducks that had caused such commotion.

As his parents leaped into the pond, Anan’s delight bubbled over, his urge to dance and giggle irrepressible.

Observing her daughter’s innocence, Qiao Xuan exchanged a glance with Shao Yunduan and sighed. “I never anticipated that those mountain bandits would harbor such formidable adversaries…”

Shao Yunduan’s gaze hardened, his agreement tacit. “Indeed, it was unexpected.”

The intensity of their assailants’ hatred was unmistakable, indicating a deep-rooted vendetta against Shao Yunduan, likely stemming from their ties to the mountain bandits.

Despite their victory over the bandit threat and the apparent jubilation that followed, Shao Yunduan, Sun Bai, Sun Qian, and Zheng Sangge knew better than to underestimate their enemies. They understood that not everyone would be eradicated in their conquest. Despite outward appearances of triumph and security, there lingered a sense of unease.

However, Zheng Sangge and his associates remained vigilant, conducting thorough investigations for an extended period. During this time, no one dared to let their guard down.

Contrary to appearances, Meng Wanfu’s men didn’t truly depart. Instead, they dispersed covertly, collaborating with Zheng Sangge’s team to root out any remaining threats.

Their efforts yielded results. Those discovered and evading capture met swift justice, either falling on the spot or being apprehended for hard labor.

Only after exhausting all avenues and confirming the absence of any lingering threats did activity gradually cease. Eventually, Meng Wanfu’s operatives departed, returning to deliver their findings.

Although this didn’t guarantee the complete eradication of all potential threats, any remaining individuals were either skilled in concealing their identities and had fled Anze Province, never to return, or were inconsequential figures.

While once invisible within the bandit stronghold, after its destruction, they could only evade detection through careful concealment. Nonetheless, they lacked the capacity to exact revenge.

That’s why Shao Yunduan decided to relocate his wife and child to Liuhe Manor.

Unexpectedly, trouble found them here.

Thankfully…

Surviving such a perilous ordeal gave them reason to reflect later.

Taking Qiao Xuan’s hands in his own, Shao Yunduan offered gentle reassurance. “The assailants today were skilled fighters, but we’ve managed to catch most of them. I believe this is an isolated incident. There’s no need to fear, my dear wife, no more threats will come.”

Any further breaches of security would be a failure on his part as the Prefect Lord. Shao Yunduan couldn’t entertain the idea that Zheng Sangge, Sun Bai, and Sun Qian were incompetent.

He trusted them implicitly.

In truth, he was taken aback by the day’s events.

Qiao Xuan’s smile faltered slightly as she confessed, “I’m not afraid… but witnessing such violence firsthand has left me unsettled.”

Recalling the tense moments of the ordeal, she felt a shiver run down her spine.

Shao Yunduan sensed her unease, his heart melting at the sight. His wife must have been deeply shaken by the events. He wondered if she would struggle with nightmares in the nights to come. He resolved to offer her comfort and companionship in the days ahead, particularly during the nights.
