Chapter 2041: Your Relative
“Your relatives!”
“…”
Shao Yunduan found himself torn between amusement and concern. Though he didn’t fully grasp his wife’s words, her unhappiness was evident.
Drawing Qiao Xuan into his embrace, he gently patted her back. “I wouldn’t even know how to mistreat my wife, let alone any relatives—no relatives, absolutely none! Please don’t be upset, my dear.”
Qiao Xuan couldn’t help but chuckle as she lifted her head from his chest. “But she insisted she was your relative.”
Shao Yunduan: “…”
“My dear…”
He felt even more bewildered.
Qiao Xuan ceased her teasing and recounted the day’s events, her anger and distress evident in her voice.
Shao Yunduan shared her shock and heartache, feeling increasingly perplexed.
“…Who on earth would fabricate such a colossal lie? My wife shouldn’t have let them leave. We should have Ah-Ye and the others apprehend and interrogate them.”
What kind of servant shared the same master? A maid who would mistreat a child merely for a jest was undoubtedly nefarious! One could surmise that her master was no better.
Shao Yunduan couldn’t fathom what kind of relative she claimed to be. It had to be a falsehood.
Hearing his suggestion, Qiao Xuan felt a pang of regret. Indeed, she shouldn’t have allowed her to depart. Who knew what she might attempt next? What if she perpetrated something under the guise of being the Prefect’s relative in the nearby city?
However, if she dared to do so, word would inevitably reach the authorities, and she wouldn’t escape unscathed.
“Whether she’s deceiving us or not, the truth will come to light soon. She won’t be as bold in front of me. She’ll slip up again,” Qiao Xuan asserted.
Shao Yunduan’s gaze hardened. “That’s for certain. I won’t let her off easily!”
After a brief pause, she couldn’t help but inquire, “Is Anan alright? Was he frightened?”
The mere thought tugged at his heartstrings. If the child hadn’t drifted off, he would have held him close and comforted him.
With a sigh, Qiao Xuan replied, “That dear boy was so young, and he cried so hard. But he was soothed afterward, so he likely won’t remember. I’ll instruct the nanny to keep an eye on him tonight to prevent any nightmares…”
Shao Yunduan nodded and planted a gentle kiss on her forehead. “Don’t be disheartened.”
Qiao Xuan leaned into his embrace, choosing silence. She wasn’t disheartened; she was seething with anger.
Fortunately, Anan enjoyed a peaceful night’s rest without any nightmares. The next morning, Qiao Xuan breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing Caiyun’s report.
The child was still tender and forgetful, yet remarkably resilient. That was a relief.
Children were highly susceptible to fear. Once frightened, their fragile constitution could lead to severe consequences.
Shao Yunduan could not help but feel sorry for Anan. He took Anan into his arms during breakfast.
The little guy was overjoyed. The monkey was tyrannizing his father.
His father was usually busy and did not have much time to hug him.
After the family of three had breakfast, Shao Yunduan accompanied them for a while before heading to the government office.
Qiao Xuan did not plan to go out today. She was going to pick strawberries and dragon fruits with Anan in the garden.
The garden boasted a variety of fruit trees: figs, jujubes, plums, persimmons, dragon fruits, papayas, and more. Qiao Xuan even dedicated a corner of the land to strawberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, and small melons. While she didn’t plant an abundance of them, they yielded plentiful fruits each year.
As the watermelons and cantaloupes reached maturity, enormous specimens tumbled onto the ground, their size making them utterly endearing.
